I have seen countless anime now in which Japanese characters where a Gi or Kimono top with a split shoulder seam that reveals a different color underneath. InuYasha wears one...Sai from Hikaru No Go wears one... Monsairaku from Otogi Zoshi wears one...
Does anyone know if there is a specific name for this style of gi/kimono and possibly how to make (or buy) one?

Just using this part of your quote, and if you've seen enough Inuyasha, it's just a slit in his robe that sees-through to his white shirt underneath. It's simple laying^^ But not sure on what the exact word for the robe and the shirt is... I mean, basically you CAN make one yourself easily by wearing 2 shirts and cutting the slit on the shoulder part of the top one...

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was comprised of two layers or one with some sewing. It would certainly be easier to make with two layers...whatever it's called...

Well, I found one webpage on making your own kimonos that said this...

"What of the armholes" you say? Well, traditional kimonoes simply inserted the sleeve into the side seam, causing a narrow shoulder opening and relying upon the fullness of the sleeve to arrange for comfort. I recommend laying out the pieces as they would fit together and hollowing out semi-circles on front and back pieces where the arm would go from body to sleeve. This will mean you have to sew on a curve for a small distance, but will make it more comfortable to wear.
