Midori Q&A - 緑に質問がある?

Postby Midori » Thu Oct 21, 2010 1:12 pm

I know I've made a Q&A thread before, but I figure now that I've been promoted to modtatership, people may want to get to know me a little better, especially since I was fairly quiet back then. So, in the spirit of bandwagonism, here I am once again to answer any questions you have. Don't hold back! Well, except maybe on the 'favorite' questions. :)

1. C.S.Lewis, John the Apostle, Lois McMaster Bujold. That's all I can think of for now.
2. Turtle, definitely. I want to be a turtle.
3. I assume you mean meet. :D Well, I can't say Jesus 'cause he's not dead, though he did die. Probably my paternal grandfather is who I'd want to meet most of all. And many of my other ancestors for that matter. Everyone else I can think of would be a famous scientist or philosopher.
4. I do not have a favorite musical genre. Genres are an illusion. A convenient classification method for store shelves, but ultimately something that is restricting rather than augmenting. Some of my favorite music is between genres. Can you give this a genre? Or this?

Of course, this doesn't mean there aren't kinds of music I tend to like more than others. I prefer things that are instrumentally interesting rather than vocally. If a piece has vocals in it, I just consider it another instrument. That's why for a lot of popular music, like rock and pop, the songs sound very much the same for me. So I tend to be more entertained by techno, new age, and baroque music and the like. Not saying there aren't some rock and pop songs that I really like. I even sometimes like rap and hip-hop, which are very focused on the lyrics and vocals.

1. The Miles Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Also the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S.Lewis. And also the book of John, by...yeah, John. There may be others I've forgotten.
2. The second option is death. Do not pick it.
3. Chef Chu's. Award-winning, politician-attracting, not-too-expensive Chinese food. Delish. Besides that, I'd have to say any restaurant serving Phở]What anime is your avatar from?

My avatar is not from an anime per-se...it's (fanart of) a character from the concept art for Black Rock Shooter, which never went into the (great) music video or the (excellent) OVA. The name of the character is Black Devil Girl and the specific artwork can be found here if you have a Pixiv account.

I haven't kept a record of my maximum number of tabs, but I'm pretty sure at at least one point it was 170-something. Right now it's only 21.

I can't pick a favorite anime or manga unfortunately. The best I can do is listing a few that I really like. I guess Noein, Kino's Journey, Toradora, and Higurashi are among them.

The video game one is a little easier but still difficult. I'm gonna have to go with Smash Bros. Melee, Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Metroid Prime for now.

And I picked Midori as a username because I've always loved green things. My parents tell me that even before I could speak, at Christmas time I always played with the green wrapping paper. I was annoyed by the fact that my username appears in blue, so I had to pick as green of an avatar as feasible.

1. Worst game you ever played?
2. Ever check out anything on That Guy with the Glasses? (I highly recommend you check out Atop the Fourth Wall if you haven't. Not only is he funny, but he's usually the cleanest one. He only swears if the comic he's reading has swearing in it or if he needs to emphasize a point)
3. What about the Angry Video Game Nerd?
4. Favorite comedian?
5. Favorite form of British entertainment?

1. Karate Champ on NES. There's no logical mapping between buttons and attacks, half the attacks randomly make you face away from your opponent, your attacks randomly go through your opponent most the time, and victory seems largely based on chance.

2. I've seen a bit of his stuff, but not a lot. I'll go watch that one now.

3. Yep, and I rather enjoy it (except for the whole graphic potty humor thing). Even more, I usually watch him on NicoNicoDouga to watch the Japanese internet's reaction to a crazy gaijin ranting about bad games.

4. Can't remember any names. The only name I can remember is Mark Lowry. Though if comedian you mean person who does funny things, then it's the XKCD guy.

5. I haven't seen much British entertainment. In fact, the only program I can think of off the top of my head that I've seen more than a little of is IT Crowd, so I guess that's my favorite by default. It was pretty good. Had a little too much social anxiety for my taste though.

1. ニ]http://nicovideo.jp/. It's a Japanese video sharing site like Youtube, with a few extra features, the most notable of which is that comments made on videos scroll across the screen at the point in the video where they were made. So, if you know a little bit of Japanese (or are learning it like me), it can be much more amusing than Youtube.

2. I am in fact from America. No offense would be taken whether I was or wasn't.

3. There was one about the etymology of words. I don't remember its name, but that one. I still have yet to read more of his work. I should get on that.

4. I have not seen an Ninja Turtles or played any of the games (besides a brief demo. So I do not have a favorite.

1. Probably the Imperial Gardens in Tokyo. Either that or the redwood forests in northern California. Hmm, but there's also some pretty nice prairies in Kenya. And some great cathedrals in England. And then there's snorkeling off the beaches of Kauai, and some great caves in Oregon. I can't pick; they're all so different.
2. You asked me this already.
3. How can I not say Ghibli? Other than them, I'm not sure; Shaft has some really strange/interesting things going on.
4. No. Especially since most of my family knows what cursing in Japanese sounds like. :)

1. The X-men are pretty cool. I've seen a couple of the movies, but not any of the comics. I think of the characters Magneto is my favorite, although he's technically not an X-man.
2. Conference that my dad was attending, related to computer programming. And a little sightseeing.
3. No, I didn't go to any anime museums. Maybe I will next time I go there.
4. They were alright. LWW was pretty good. Caspian had...issues, but I'm looking forward to Dawn Treader. You know, there was a TV serial made by BBC that covered the first four books that was pretty good too.

Now that I think about it, that counts as British entertainment, doesn't it? Huh.

1. Piano. If skill ranges from level 1 to level 99, I'm at level 14 or so.
2. Hmm, that varies. I like chocolate, and I also like mint, and I also like more fruity kinds of flavors. I think I like variety most of all.
3. Bob-omb, definitely. Sheer power of a dangerous sort. Second favorite would be the parasol, though that's only in Melee.
4. Yes, I loved Fantasia. My favorite part was actually the concert at the beginning with the abstract animation. I also saw Fantasia 2000, though I don't remember any of it.

1. Beethoven, though he's bordering on romantic. Unless you include Baroque composers, in which case it'd be J.S.Bach (who also had some romantic things going on but whatever :)
2. Probably E-major (and C#-minor).
3. No, though it sounds like something I might want to watch occasionally.
4. Hmm, that's difficult. I haven't seen a lot of horror films. If you had said anime, I'd have said Higurashi, but films...Does Spirited Away count? :) Actually if you want real classic horror, I'll go with the original Frankenstein movie. However totally-not-based-on-the-book it was, it had something going for it. Although,
I don't think the doctor should have survived in the end. :]
^This inspired question 1.
1. Did you ever notice that they used the same actress for the White Witch and the Green Lady in the BBC series? Now that you know that, does it bother you?
2. Is there any particular reason you chose the Japanese word for "green" for your name? Or are you from the Emerald City....is that why? :)
3. Do you like the term "modification" as a term referring someone becoming a mod? :dizzy:
And.... I've exhausted my mental capacity of thinking up questions.

1. No...well, maybe. At least it didn't bother me at the time. They're both evil witches after all.
2. Well, I've been studying Japanese, and this forum is about Japanese things for the most part. I figured it'd be appropriate. Let me quote myself:
Midori, unmodified wrote:Well, I've always strongly favored the color green, and so the Japanese word for that made sense. Actually, it was primarily my Smash Bros. 1. Favorite Disney character?
2. Favorite old-school anime series? (pre-Toonami)
3. Favorite cartoon you watched as a child?

1. That'd be the Beast. He was cool until he turned back into the prince.
2. Let's see...there was this great kid's show called Marine Boy.
3. That'd be the very same one.

2. This is getting difficult. I don't know, I haven't read many. If I remember one I especially liked, I'll post it.
3. I'm currently going through the original series. Slowly. The most recent episode I watched was "The Return of the Archons".

For the record, it's not necessary to watch the classic version of Star Trek to understand the ones that came later, like Next Generation or Deep Space 9. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't watch them, btw.)
1. Favorite "so bad it's good" movie?
2. Ever read any of the Star Wars books?
3. Ever read the Dune series (either the originals or the revival by his son and Kevin Anderson)?
4. What do you think of Spider-man?

Do you have a favourate colour?
And this I pray, that your love would abound still, more and more with real knowledge and all discernment. Be prepared to preach the gospel at a moment's notice. Do you know the gospel well enough to do so yourself? Be ready.
