No Wily Fortress from Mega Man 2? Really? :|

At least Mega Man 3's intro was in there to keep it from absolute failure.

So let's post the actual, y'know, GOOD Mega Man songs.

Like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFKtYCcMWT4 In fact, I'm pretty sure if you have a video game music thread, and don't post this song, you're going to Hell. Don't look at me man, I didn't make the rules okay?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ipPeVc0i7I This one is criminally underrated. The Complete Works remix version is also sweet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxX_fXM5bC4

While the intro theme to Mega Man 3 is great, the REAL classic is of course, the "Get Weapon" music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRlDxDjzx7A In fact, it's so awesome, that it even reappeared in Mega Man X5, in the intro song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYlYHJ4P4A8

Geez. Mega Man 6. Lot of good music in that game. It comes down to either Flame Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdWeTin2mho especially ESPECIALLY the Complete Works remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79YfZS8975s or Knight Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OTi1k4v8Yg and yeah the Complete Works remix too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DF5ztNKW0Q

Mega Man 7 is another one where the music gets hard to choose. There's great ones like the intro stage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-SXBYTgXhg and Shade Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsgbnG7ZJ4g and although it might be cheating, there's also the Ghouls 'N Ghosts alternate Shade Man music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4XPZRJknX0

And if I said that the Dark Man Stage music from MMV was criminally underrated, it's a treasonous crime against humanity that this track from MM7 doesn't get more love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_Ihm7xzHNQ and the Wily fight music is pretty sweet too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-IuJdormvQ

Mega Man 8. Man going through these pretty much reminds me Mega Man has like the best music EVER and how sad it was that Annette was the only one to mention the series. Intro theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUKh7WP5eX0 was good, as was the opening island http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7nBWRJo2xw and Search Man rocks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l88-qEhws8I

Then we have the weird differences between the Playstation and Saturn versions of the game. Like the Tengu Man theme being completely different between the PS1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81pQ4KaU94s and Saturn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td0IrexuHb4 (pssst the Saturn version is better). PLUS the Saturn version had the extra fights (with remixed music!) with Wood Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk7k0TveRaM and Cut Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_2ZSPrddQQ

Mega Man 9. One of the few Mega Man games I never beat. Well, Galaxy Man is awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdDbbzuq1vY but hands down Tornado Man has the best track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvjc12new0

However I'd be a fool if I didn't like the Wily Fortress music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKXWS1iviho along with the unbelievably awesome remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZOP5_lfn9I

I could make it easy on myself and say "Every track from Mega Man X" but the standouts to me are Spark Mandrill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYdSLaVu9p4 and Armored Armadillo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja5QUTlgZ3Y Other than that you have Sigma's Fortress 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C16jAi8f36o and Sigma's Fortress 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTfR4Ryu1BI as well as the fairly sweet ending theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4azBiI1ilc

I know you were expecting me to say Storm Eagle, but while I like his music, I don't think it's the best from the game. :p

X2, lots of sweet music there like Bubble Crab http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lg2Lc3v7_D0 Flame Stag http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShqLb9MwBco and Overdrive Ostrich http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afCfbnOBAns Of course, how could anyone forget the intro stage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRJYxJfTzyk or the X-Hunters Stage 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKU44GiVl_I and the super sweet Zero music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3h_bx0PLxWg

But the crowning jewel of X2 was the ending music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4NC7kzICuw

X3 was the one that was kinda weak on music. Not that there wasn't good music...there was! Including probably my favorite track ever from the MMX series. It's just that there's two soundtracks, and the arranged one is, well, not good. Anyway from the original SNES there's the absolute best Zero theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQgxfG8-sZA as well as like I said, my favorite track probably which is Gravity Beetle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lItNymlY-jY Okay, okay, I'll have to give credit to the Arranged soundtrack for X3 for one song, which I feel is much better than the SNES version. That would be Blizzard Buffalo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_svJVgBfGFk

X4...eh. I wasn't a fan of X4 overall, and the music is kinda meh to me too. X5 had some good tracks, but a few of them were just remixes from previous games. Still it had a couple like Izzy Glow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lQK3JAaN5M and Mattrex http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4qFY1b_d2U

X6 was where the music got good again, REALLY good, such as the NA/EU version of the opening stage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNjD30VPbY8 as well as Blaze Heatnix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz4qNw712aM and Blizzard Wolfang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPS4Va5E1nc but absolutely ABSOLUTELY the best song from X6 is Infinity Mijinion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMaD05XTtQY

And while Gate's Laboratory is a remix of the X-Hunter stage from X2, it's good enough to be posted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KScNskuudeI

Oh, yeah. I can't forget. The FULL version of the opening song from Mega Man X6, which is called "Moonlight" and is actually sung by Showtaro Morikubo, who does the voice for X in the games http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0poY37klHEY

X7 and X8 I won't touch, because I hate X7, and while X8 is awesome none of the music really sticks out for me. :\ However, two honorable mentions that don't count because they're remixes are Yuu's remixes of Air Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_C2r2AUrdU and Magnet Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkOKMwqqTf4 from Rockman World 2 for the Game Boy.

SEE IF YOU PEOPLE HAD JUST MENTIONED MEGA MAN TO START WITH I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO MAKE THIS GIGANTIC COMMENT. Let this be a lesson to you all.

Many of mine have already been mentioned, so I won't dwell on them--the Final Fantasy series (especially IV-VI and VIII), Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I would also second Seiken Densetsu 3; the music was pretty good to begin with, but some of it got reused a bit too much for my taste.

Other than those, one of my all-time favorite game soundtracks is Romancing SaGa 3, composed by Kenji Ito. And since probably not many people here have heard of or played this game, some links are in order: first, some awesome battle music, and also this haunting and beautiful castle music.

Speaking of the SaGa series, the original ones for Game Boy (released in the States as Final Fantasy Legend I, II, and III) also had some very good music:

8-bit music just does not get much better than that.

Don't forget the 20th anniversary collection remixes.

Air Man (Techno)

Dr. Wily 1 (Rock)

Elec Man (Techno)

Yamato Man (Rock)

Also, this.

Anyway, back to not-Mega Man music. I've always liked Moon Over the Castle, which is kind of the theme song for the Gran Turismo series.

Well first let's get this out of the way by saying I think Chrono Trigger is possibly one of the finest soundtracks to any Japanese RPG I have ever played, in particular the penultimate boss theme World Revolution. Rather than being an oppressively moody piece, it's determined and constantly changing. Careful listening can lead you to characterize the alternating tempos as the changing of the tide, higher energetic tones to emphasize the heroes' triumph, heavier and more vicious tones to herald the villain's own sizable power.
Depths of the Night
Ocean Palace
World Revolution

I'm also quite fond of the music in classic Sonic games, Sonic & Knuckles being my personal favorite. Not only is every level accompanied by a distinct theme, there are slight variations between acts, if you'd compare.
Flying Battery Zone Act 1
Flying Battery Zone Act 2
Lava Reef Zone Act 1
Lava Reef Zone Act 2

Also, REMIXES.
Sky Sanctuary Zone
Sky Sanctuary Zone - Breathtaking Vision

And I am contractually obligated to mention Guilty Gear as many times as it takes to make Heavy Metal Jazz a legitimate genre.
The Original
Haven't You Got Eyes in Your Head?
Fuuga

There's also Final Fantasy IX, which does a lot of music right, but for some reason seems to get the sad, melancholy ones the best.
Distant Memory
Chamber of a Thousand Faces
You're Not Alone
Memoria

Also, Steiner's music is awesome.
Steiner's Theme

And finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't include at least one track from Odin Sphere, so here's several.
A Hard Fight and Then Hope
A Fate Accepted
Rise to Action and Invasion
The Prince of Darkness
Sinking in Sadness
The Ruined Landscape of Nations at War
The Ruined Landscape of Nations at War ~Second~

And I leave you with the ending theme.Theme of Odin Sphere

Since I played it recently (well...more recently), I feel like I need to mention the No More Heroes 2 soundtrack. NMH's soundtrack seemed to have more variety and more songs, but I just liked the soundtrack for the sequel more.

There's this bit of stage music which is awesome and epic.
There's this song which will get stuck in your head if you listen to it long enough.
And of course there is this version of the song which they used in the trailer...which I really like.

Besides NMH2, other games soundtracks which I like include Muramasa, Iji, the Zelda Games, the Paper Mario games, and a whole slew of others.

Well, let me just say that FFX is the only game so far that's made me rush out and buy the complete OST with four discs that cost a heapin' bundle because it was imported from Japan. Because the FFX music is just that beautiful. Especially "To Zanarkand" and "Suteki Da Ne?", of course. I also love that Uematsu did something right and brought the tune of "Suteki Da Ne?" out in many different places, not just the romancey parts, making that the theme of the whole game and tying it all together. Unlike FFXII, which I've just finished playing, and which has probably the most boring FF music I've ever heard because I couldn't recognize any recurring themes anywhere.

I also love the music from FF1, FFIV, and FFVI. (*breaks into operatic "Ohhhh, Mariaaaaa!"*)

Zelda music is classic, of course. Koji Kondo really knew what he was doing when he made those beautiful themes. I especially love the music in Ocarina of Time, though. Probably because music is kind of the focus of the entire game, and you get to play pretty little tunes on your ocarina and all that. I love so many of the songs - the Lost Woods, Kakariko Village, Epona's Song, Zelda's Lullaby, the Bolero of Fire, the Serenade of Water, Gerudo Valley.... Come on, tell me you haven't gone to Gerudo Valley and just stood there listening to the music!

Shadow of the Colossus has amazing music too, of course. I love that epic sound when you're fighting a Colossus! Really cinematic.

The ICO soundtrack is very simple, and there's not much there since most of the game plays with no music at all, but what is there is perfect. The credits song, "You Were There," is also an incredibly beautiful piece that still brings tears to my eyes if I let it. Michiru Oshima also happened to compose music for my favorite anime, Full Metal Alchemist ;)

Oh dude! Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time!!!!! Why has no one mentioned this yet?! >:o I have never heard a more perfect blend of Middle Eastern music and Western rock. They fit with each other perfectly, and bring out the feel of the game extremely well. The credits song, "Time Only Knows," is slightly unintelligible, but wonderful as well.
(I like the song "I Stand Alone", but other than that I didn't think much of the music in Warrior Within or Two Thrones.)

And yes, Xenogears has amazing music. I haven't even finished the game yet, and I already know that I love the music to death. I love the boss battle music and so many of the themes in various places. *starts humming the Aveh/Yggdrasil theme* And there's this one "violin solo" piece that is so beautiful you forget it's not an actual violin playing.

There's this old, completely unknown Diablo-clone RPG called Nox that I played instead of Diablo, and it has really good fantasy music. It epitomizes fantasy for me. There's this one song that almost sounds like it's saying, "We've - got - to hurry!"

And I've never played Knights of Honor (a strategy game where you conquer Europe) and never intend to, but it has a really amazing soundtrack. Beautiful fantasy music.

Ummm...I think that's all for now. Oh yeah, some of the Halo stuff was good.
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

While I don't think the following are objectivly the "best" or most beautiful video game OSTs, they represent my favorites, the stuff that I keep going back to over and over again. As far as everyday listening, my tastes tend towards the electronic/jazzy, and this is totally reflected in my slections. I posted links to a few standout tracks, though I mostly enjoy the entire OSTs for these games.

So today I was just kind of messing around on HSR and y'know...dang if Stinkoman doesn't have some freaking sweet music on it. All of it is pretty great but here's what I think are the highlights.

Level 1: GO HOME! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niWcPULCbls&feature=related

This one is by far the best, the BEST.

Level 5: OH, THE MOON! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7h1stAHTd8&feature=related

Level 6: STRATOFEAR! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2al0qPOQfE&feature=related

Level 7: ICE 2 MEET U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv6eBHKOUlw&feature=related

And this one is great because of how the level is...well it's great on its own too.

Level 0: NEGATORY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-QW-ATIN5M&feature=related

EDIT: Feel like I should mention the VikingGuitar remix of Stinkoman's Level 1 music, since TBC even featured it on the HSR website. http://www.myspace.com/vikingguitarmetal In the playlist, it's called Stinkoman 20X6 Power Crunch.
