Who are your favorite lyricists and why?

For me in no particular order it would be...

Reese Roper - Bands: Five Iron Frenzy, BraveSaintSaturn, Roper: From extremely funny to extremely sad and poignant to convicting, Reese can write it all and make it work extremely well.

Josh Dies - Showbread, Dies: Man, does this dude know how to craft lyrics, always insightful, many times witty, ton's o' fun, and always rad.

Darin Kiem - Staple: Some of the most truthful and convicting lyrics, always makes you think, "wow that's just like me."

Aaron Weiss - meWithoutYou: I honestly think that this guy is the best lyricist of all time, I've listened to songs countless times and still got something new from the lyrics. This dude is a great poet.

Steve Camp - Steve Camp: Pretty much extremely convicting lyrics that are really well crafted.

the singer from my epic, he also has astounding lyrics. They are deep and poetic, and make you think.

anathallo also has a great lyricist.

(Its hard to find all their lyrics online, but this is one of the really good songs.)

I like john foreman. He's good.

the singer from as cities burn is also greaaat.

the chariot, they are all good. although the psalters is more like.. liturgical sometimes. but i like it. :]

Definitely John Fogerty. He wrote some of the greatest songs ever recorded such as "Proud Mary", "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" and "Who'll Stop the Rain?".

And you can't forget the philosophical lyrical genius, Jim Morrison.
Especially "Moonlight Drive". One of the first songs he's written, and it's still a big hit even after his passing.
Did you know Jim Morrison's writing his greatly inspired by a childhood incident where him and his family were driving through the desert and a truck filled with Native Americans was splattered over the road, all dead and or dying?

Glen Hansard - The Frames, The Swell Season, Once OST: All his lyrics are deep and moving, I challenge anyone to listen to them and not be moved by the lyrics.

Maya for LM.C - his sense of irony and his ability to completely flip the mood of a song in a single line make for lots of fun

Tatsurou for MUCC - the lyrics for "Libra" won me over in an instant

Ryuutaro for Plastic Tree - abstract but beautiful imagery and often a little melancholy--and yet with the occasional ridiculously cracked-out song

Hmmmm.....

Leeland Mooring-Leeland: I love the songs he writes! They're positive, moving and he's not afraid to write and sing about Jesus!

Jesse Ribordy is really good as well. I liked some of the songs from Crashings, haven't yet listened to some of the newer stuff though.

Whoever wrote "For the moments I feel faint" from Relient K. I love that song.

Adam Agee is good too.

Whoever wrote "Dandelions" from Five Iron Frenzy.

Bob Dylan. OK, I admit he's not the greatest singer in the world, but his lyrics are good. I love "Blowing in the Wind". BTW, is there a Christian version of that song? It seems compatible with Christianity.

I don't know at what point he wrote that song, but now he professes Christianity.

Usually, I'm more interested in the music being played rather than what's being said......but, I would say......

Reese Roper - Really good lyricist.....can write hilarious senseless songs and songs that really make you think about your faith

Weird Al Yankovic - His lyrics are just too funny

W.S. Gilbert - Someone mentioned Sondheim and theatre, so I'm gonna mention my favorite literary genius here. His songs from the Gilbert and Sullivan operas aren't just funny, but they're catchy and just full of rhyme. Really fun songs if you get into them.
