Connectivity woes

Postby Ingemar » Sat Nov 15, 2008 11:23 am

I have a cable modem for my connection and my computer is connected to a router. My problem seems to be that when the computer is running, after an hour or two, the connection dies. I try unplugging and replugging the modem and router, but this doesn't seem to work.

Whenever I RESTART my computer, it starts working again.

Thoughts?

Hi Ingemar! I too have had my share of dropped connections, but usually it's the IP's fault.

There are 3 possible sources of error here.

The first is your computer, and I suspect it because the problem is resolved when you restart your computer, so start with this suggestion and reply back if you still need to restart to get a connection.

Windows, Linux, or Mac?

For windows, try opening the command prompt (start menu -> run -> type "cmd"). Then in the console, type "ipconfig /release", followed by "ipconfig /renew". If that restarts the connection, then you should be ok. (no quotes when typing)

For Linux, in a terminal type /etc/init.d/network stop, followed by /etc/init.d/network start (this will work for most distros).

For mac I'm not sure, but there should be something in the control panel that lets you renew your IP address.

If there is a problem with your ethernet adapter or something else related to your computer, this should fix it temporarily until it breaks again without having to restart your machine each time.
