PSP or DS games?

Postby Cognitive Gear » Fri Apr 06, 2007 1:00 pm

I will be getting my tax return soon, and it's large enought to both pay for AX and do one of two things:

Buy a PSP or buy some DS games that I haven't obtained yet.

So I'm asking for your opinions. PSP or DS games?

My biggest pull for PSP is Valkyrie Profile (anyone know how the load times are on this?) and SNES games. (does anyone know if Chrono Trigger runs at full speed?)

DS games I will most likely get:

Both Pheonix Wright

Hotel Dusk

Final Fantasy III-VI

One thing is that theoretically I can eventually play FFIV-IX and the Chrono games on the PSP. It would just take time and a large memory card.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

As much as it pains me to say this, they haven't released any multi-disc PS1 games on PSN... So, that means games like FF7-9 and Chrono Cross won't work... It really sucks, because that's one of the reasons that I bought such a big memory stick (I have a 4 gig... 50 bucks, which is a bargain for what I got, but it still hurts)... Once Sony figures out how to get the multi-disc games to work, then the good games will be playable (MGS, FF7-9, CC) and they will have better games on PSN. Of course, you still have to account for the two missing buttons (L2 and R2)

For SNES games, I have an emulator on my PSP and it runs full speed for most of the games, CT included, but it requires an unofficial firmware, and you risk bricking your system... Plus, you can't switch to unofficial firmware on anything past 3.03. So, if you're talking about a NEW PSP, you can forget emulation. For now, anyhow, until they crack the 3.10+ firmwares to create a downgrader for it. So, I guess I'd stick to actual PSP games. These are my faves:

Loco Roco (seriously, no PSP owner should be without this game.)

MG : PO (duh, but make sure you beat MGS3 first... otherwise there are major spoilers)

Exit (a very addictive sidescrolling platforming puzzle game)

If you're into FPS games, and have reliable wireless internet or know some hotspots you can access, Medal of Honor is pretty sweet, once you get used to the weird controls.

Speaking of weird controls, a lot of people like the OTHER stealth games on the system, Syphon Filter and Splinter Cell... Me, not so much. The controls were weird... MG : PO controls much better than those games...

I'm not sure if it's out yet, but if you like fighting games, and perhaps have a softspot in your heart for Dreamcast nostalgia, you can find the Powerstone collection on PSP... Whenever it comes out, which should be soon.

I haven't played a single PSP RPG yet... I know there are some good ones coming. Especially for TRPG fans... Disgaea is hitting PSP soon, as is the penultimate TRPG, Final Fantasy Tactics... The real one, where you can actually die and you can rotate the field... Rotating the field FTW. Anyhow...

As for DS... I don't know what you have there, either. I'd say Phoenix Wright is an obvious choice, as is Trauma Center. Also, brain age is supposed to be pretty awesome, though I haven't gotten to play it. I have played NSMB, which is absolutely awesome. I want to try the Princess Peach game, too, but haven't even seen it in action. Sidescrolling mario games can do no wrong, I think... You know, except for the horrible designs for goombas and the skeleton turtles in Super Mario World...

I have more experience with the PSP, but that's what I suggest... NSMB, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center...

Even though I'm optimistic about the PSP. Seriously; get more DS games.

Phoenix Wright I and II, Hotel Dusk, FFVI, OUENDAN, ELITE BEAT AGENTS, all of those are pretty much the best in their genre.

Hmm..
Here are some more good DS games:
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Advance Wars Dual Strike
Truama Center: Under the Knife
Mario Kart DS

Hope that helps

I'm sorry, but I hate Mario Kart DS. I don't see why everyone loves it. After a while, it just got incredibly boring.

Someone pointed out this site on another forum. It gives a rundown of a lot of PSP rpgs, as well as showing load issues (the genesis collection seems to be the fastest loading games) Maybe this will help.

Import yourself a copy of Jump Ultimate Stars for the DS. I played it this weekend and am going to do so myself once I have money again . . .

go for the DS games. worth your time, and you get much more enjoyment. PSPs are so expersive and the games cost 20-30 dollars morethan DS games

If you buy Hotel Dusk, tell me how it is. I could alway use another excuse to eventually buy a DS myself.

There's a lot of good games for both systems... it all depends on what you enjoy playing.
Unfortunately I don't own a PSP, so I can't give you much game advice.

As for DS, again, I guess it depends on what you enjoy playing, but Advance Wars DS and New Super Mario Bros. are definitely must-haves in my book. Starfox Command is also a blast (but it gets a little old after a while)

I won't suggest any more in order to avoid redundancy, since I don't really have anything to add that others haven't already said.

Good luck with your buying!

PSP does not have this. Thusly, it is better to buy this and only this.

Yeah, but DS doesn't have Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War. I'll finally be able to brush the dust off my PSP when that gets released!

Pfft. Who needs sword wielders or magic wizards fighting evil when you can have a war torn cheerleader with DOUBLE SPIKY SIDEBURNS cheer for a salary man to save his daughter from a godzilla sized blue rat.

I bet none of your characters have DOUBLE SPIKY SIDEBURNS, do they?

And besides, Square-Enix is giving us 7 more game on our DS's then the PSP. Including new games such as It's a Wonderful Life. And DRAGON QUEST IX! (Even though I've never played a Dragon Quest game in my life.)

XD

*pat head* I'm really sorry. I'm a Sega/Nintendo loyalist and always will be until they meet their end, but that doesn't mean I should be rude to those who own other systems.

After all, I owned a PS2 for a short time for Katamari and Shadow of the Colossus. *Nintendo loyalists pre-pare to attack* But I sold it because it was overheating too much. *Nintendo loyalists stray back*

FF Tactics WILL be cool, but not cool enough to ignore the slew of aweosme Square titles heading to DS, as Alexander said.

Also, DS has a new pair of pokemon games coming... that's got to count for something.

Egads. What did Ouendan do to us? I love the game so much I would marry it if it was a girl.

Well...maybe...not...that...much...

...

.

PLEASE MARRY ME AOI-CHAN!

She's...just...so...qute...

And unfortunately Felix, that's how it is in the video game world in terms of sales. The one that sells the best gets the most third-party support.

PSP DOES have DJ Max, however. Just as weird. Just as musical.

Oh, and I'm happily playing Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 8 on my PSP... I'll be happily playing Chrono Cross until I get to disc 2, that is... You can't save on that game pre disc switch... *cries* FF8 works, though, because you save between discs, and info is shared between discs, unlike in Chrono Cross... If you have leet haxor skillz like I do (sarcasm) you can play every final fantasy 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9 on your PSP, as well as Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, Azure Dreams, Xenogears, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid (and portable ops, which is an awesome addition to the series...) and, if you're into that sort of thing, Saga Frontier 1 and 2. Oh, and if you have NEVER played a mana game in your life, you may even be able to enjoy Legend of mana... Man, I love my PSP...

Eh, but Dragon Quest IX looks like trash to me, and none of the other games Square is sending to the DS look even remotely interesting...except for Tactics A2, which hopefully will be better than Tactics Advance. *crosses fingers*
Also, DS has a new pair of pokemon games coming... that's got to count for something.

Heck yes it does. *is impatient from waiting so long* XD

Oh yeah, I've been wanting to play that xD Not as weird though, DEFINITELY not as weird (It's pretty much as IIDX clone). It is mega-fun though.
