Sugar on LCD monitor

Postby Slater » Wed Mar 28, 2007 10:12 am

Ok, so imagine this... I'm working on my programming project while eating a packet of PopRocks. In this process, I find a humungoid poprock. I was like "Holy Crap!" I had to eat it; it was like half the size of my fingernail. For sure, the holy grail of Pop-rocks, something to be enjoyed right?

So I stuck it in my mouth, holding it between my teeth as I worked, and before I knew it the thing... well, it popped, and popped big.

This caused a fragment of the chunk to stick to my laptop's LCD screen. "No big deal," I figured, I'd just clean it off like I normally do. So I got some wetted toilet paper and gently tried removing it by wiping the area. Most of it came off without any resistance but some sugary-fizzing residue remained behind and refused to come off. So I got more toilet paper and used special LCD cleaning substance (not sure what's in it; the ingrediants aren't on the bottle but I got it at Radio Shack with the help of their employees). This time, not only didn't the stuff come off but it left a very strange (and very prominent) splotch on my screen in the general area where the sugar was.

I'm not sure how to get this off now. It's like the residue froze to the screen and I'm afraid to use any force to scrape it off... Naturally, it seems like it would damage the screen if I did that. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to get this stuff off?

Dip a q-tip in alcohol and gently rub it. As the alcohol evaporates, you can rub a little harder. Use the other end (the dry one) of the q-tip to wip the remainder off.

Hmmm. I've never had to clean sugar off an LCD before...(or anything for that matter). My first instinct said denatured alcohol would be a good idea since I use it at work for cleaning. I did a search online and it does seem that a half/half mix of rubbing alcohol(isopropyl) and water is a recommended cleaning method for LCDs. Depending on how dirty your screen his, you might even want a slightly stronger mixture. Just be sure and use a super soft piece of cloth rag or something equally non-abrasive. Hope it works on sugar...

Now I'm curious: what's a PopRock? It sounds like a combination of two music genres.

>_> as for the cleaning of lcd, no clue. I had a regular monitor ^^, which I used as a dry erase board, lol. so, I hope that the stuff the others mentioned works.

*wonders if anyone not american thinks the word "candy" is cute? Or am I just wierd?*

Anyways, I know when I wiped my LCD off once it left this strange brown streak... I think it's gone now...but it was there for a good 6 months, but i was too afraid to clean it...:/

yes, we do have some strange candy here, Pop Rocks are actually kind of painful in my opinion.. but the sound is awesome!

BTW I have eaten a little austrailian candy...it was a candybar made out of Honey comb.. VERY TASTEY

I'm not particularly fond of the term 'candy' but it is funny.

A little off topic again, but I'm guessing that was either a Crunchie or Violet Crumble.

Yay for alcohol! Uh.. I mean.. for cleaning...
