My Procrastinated Introduction

Yes, I've been on here for a bit but don't post very frequently and at times forget to log in. My name is Gil and am a Mac user. For anyone who doesn't know what a MAC is, my simple answer would be is that this is a computer from the makers of the iPod. As you probably guessed, I'm a computer geek (shucks). No...I don't have glasses but simply like to know everything about the inner computer operations. Us mac users for some reason really, i mean really have a dislike for Windows computers. We can go as far as to never touch one. As they say, once you go to the mac, you never go back! I'm working on my first AMV and will release it soon. I like doing creative projects. Okay enough about computers.

I live in LA, California which is an awful place. Please, don't say "cooL' because it's not. Until further notice, I'm stuck in this dirty place. Not all areas are this way but I'll tell you that this marks about 75% of the cities. Regardless, I'm grateful that I do have a home so my Dad and I do all we can to help the third-world countries by sending blankets or just bible comic books. This was mostly inspired by Voice of Martyrs and Travel the Road Series.

I found this website by searching in google for a mac anime group but that didn't work. It came to me that I could find a christian anime group although I didn't expect to find a large group, and thought that there wouldn't be such a community. Italicized for people who think my About me is dull and just want to know how i found this website. Oh and my thanks for creating this website!

So I got a brother (10) and a sister(12). They both copied my interest in anime but I don't like their choices. I know, you're probably wondering as to how they can "copy" an interest but they really did! I used to watch the DBZ (bought the series) on TV and most of the times missed the episodes so I literally had to make up my own story to those other episodes. Good thing my story wasn't the real story . I'll give more info if I need to add more.

Hi there, and welcome! Nice to see a dedicated Mac user on the site. XD I haven't got the money for a nice one, myself (I mainly use a Dell, but I do have a blue G3--only 6 gigs, though XD), though I'm considering saving up some money for a Mac Mini. At any rate, I think we all pretty much know what Macs are, so no worries there. XD

I know some about mac beeing useing one for about 1,5 year at a school. Diden't fancy it too much to be honest, but it sure have spesial uses, just probably not the sections I am majoring in.

I can see Macs becoming the main computer in 10 years, what with Vista's obvious downfalls. But yeah, there's a good bunch of Mac users here on CAA.

Apple is huge now...they've got commercials and advertisements all over the place (my personal favorites being the ones that compare them with PCs through characterizations XD).

Haha, yeah the best commercial is that Vista security agent. That's true and the fact that macs are usually shown in movies. I think another factor is the mac VS pc debates which grabs user's attention. The news on Apple is booming as well. Problem is, I don't think many of the teens watch news or pay attention to the ads. Some don't care or even know what type of computer they have. I've actually have experienced this...sad but true .

I guess so but a LOT of them haven't even tried a mac. Some of 'em don't know what it looks like. Apple is putting a lot of effort into their ads and it seems to be paying off. We'll just have to wait and see what happens with Leopard.

Where? I would expect a mac anime group but nothin and it's even more rare to find one who is a christian. Perhaps it goes even more rare for them to even go so far as to make a music video. There's basically one article on AMV.org that teaches you how to make one in iMovie. Although i was surprised how insanely simple it was that I urged to get Final Cut Express. Most mac users I know don't watch anime but then again, it's good to associate with fellow christians

Just for the record, there are a lot of Macintosh users on this site, and Apple *IS* gaining popularity. I've worked as a computer security guy for a long time, and I prefer Macs because they tend to be more secure. I've done technical support, and I do a lot of work on Windows stuff. I *do* prefer my Mac, though. I've got a couple of systems I've built at work that absolutely HAD to be stable, so I used XServes for those systems.

I see that you're the tough fellow. Actually, I have practically used Windows since I was 10. Even though I got rid of all my PC's, my dad and mom still use one and I'm the one who ends up trying to fix the problems that they experience. In fact, I gained such a liking for the mac that I'm a developer for the platform.

Hah, no i meant a mac anime user group. I've been there but it's not very active. I noticed that Macrumors has quite a few mac users who watch anime but I was look for a specific forum. Oh well...Guess I'll have to wait until mac doubles there market share or something.

Interesting. Well, I guess that i'll just wait and see. What I'm mainly referring to is to those who use mac as their primary OS.

I see that you have quite a bit experience on both platforms. It is indeed a lot more securer although some would just argue that the market share is too small and that macs will get viruses sooner or later. Although they don't realize the inner security workings of the OS which makes it a lot more difficult to hack and to spread this virus to other macs.

Thought I must say you seem pretty hateful against PCs. True I prefer using my handy iBook G4, but there are times when I just use my PC instead. Gaming, chatting, etc.

I find fanaticism on one side to be rather blind and immature. Embrace all operating systems, as I say.

Maybe but Mac OS X does have it's share of Linux similarities. The difference between Apple and Microsoft is that Apple uses open source software and returns any innovations that they have added to it. The problem with open source stuff such as Linux is that they copy the way Microsoft does things such as the GUI. This is not to say that all Linux OSes work this way but most just do. Take NeoOffice which is a deliberate attempt to copy Word and they did a good job at it. Now we don't have to use Microsoft Office! Apple, on the other hand, sees problems with Microsfot's approach and attempt to improve it. Another example of Apple's contributions:

So in my opinion, I see Apple and Linux as allies although they both take different approaches. Open source communities have though of wonderful ideas but they copy the "Microsoft" way by using a complicated interface and thus the features cannot be put to their full potential unless one is an expert in this area.

We were talking about software and then hardware? Hmm, I didn't say that Linux was bad. What I did say is that they take different approaches but Apple helps the open source community so you should be grateful. Microsoft on the other hand tried to stop open source by claiming that they don't "innovate".

Let's take a look at the definition of a monopoly. On a sidenote, having a monopoly this doesn’t automatically mean that they are doing something illegal.

Monopoly
A situation in which a single company owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service. This would happen in the case that there is a barrier to entry into the industry that allows the single company to operate without competition (for example, vast economies of scale, barriers to entry, or governmental regulation). In such an industry structure, the producer will often produce a volume that is less than the amount which would maximize social welfare.

Microsoft has a monopoly which is perfectly legal in certain aspects unless they use this monopoly in a wrong way. For example, Micro$oft has used their monopoly to ensure their position and thus forces small business to go out of business. Microsoft is a monopoly that engages into illegal business activities and they create a product that does not increase the social welfare. A perfect example would be IE and Netscape. The difference with Apple is that they gain a monopoly via innovation rather than on taking away innovative companies that could be of competition. There is plenty of competition for the iPod but why hasn't the "iPod Killers" been able to take their dominance? it's primarily because the consumers like the way their products work. Can you provide a example of a illegal business move by Apple that hurt the competitors?

If people want to run Linux on cheaper computers then that is fine but the same can be said about Windows. Windows can be installed on any computer and Linux can be installed on a mac. Not much differences or an advantage. Apple maintains a monopoly on their computers because that works best for them. They know their hardware best and therefore there is no compatibility problems and it just works
