The Metal Gear Thread

Postby Htom Sirveaux » Thu Jan 22, 2004 7:43 pm

Warning: Due to the nature of this thread, it's bound to contain spoilers, so if you're not entirely familiar with the series, jump in at your own risk.

The Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid games are my favorite game series. In honor of that, I've decided to start a thread for discussion of the Metal Gear Series (in particular storyline, theories, questions, and the like) in games past, present, and future. To kick things off, I'd like to offer what seems to be a heretofore unposed question up for theoretical discussion:

How did Olga get her hands on a Cyborg Ninja suit? Wasn't the original one pretty much trashed beyond repair when Liquid got through with him? Or could it have been salvaged?

Hmm... I forget, actually... I haven't played MGS in a long time, so I don't remember if there could have been OTHER "ninja" exoskeletons. Actually, there were... I think...

How on EARTH is Liquid's personality supposed to be transfered with his ARM? I never did once get that, and felt that a serious black mark against MGS2.

Oh, yeah, and as for the Hero of MGS3, you know that snake wasn't born yet in the 60's, right? And, besides, that guy had a messed up eye... Hmm... I wonder what that could mean? *coughbigbosscough* Ok, so that's not any big news for true Metal Gear fans... Of course there aren't that many in the US... There are a lot of "Metal Gear Solid" fans, and a few fans of the NES "Metal Gear" games, but the NES games were not canon... The only canon games pre-solid are the MSX games...

How did Grey Fox burst into flames and disappear, only to be 'revived' later? Did they somehow adult clone his ashes with his memories? That would be a little sigourney, I mean senseless (sorry, common mistake) Well, I guess he didn't really burst into flames, but it looked much cooler to do that in the MSX before they knew they would be bringing him back.

There is a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense about Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

For example, how much of the game was real, and how much was a simulation? How did they transition between the different parts? They would have had to do it at least a few times, especially when Fortune was dodging bullets fired by Raiden, Snake, etc.
And how did they end up in Washington D.C. (or was it New York) at the end of the game?
That game was a mess in terms of plot. Could someone explain it (if not I'll just consult the plot summary on GameFAQs ;) )?

Bobtheduck: The "Liquid's arm" thing doesn't quite sit well with me, either. But the reappearance of Gray Fox (nice Alien: Resurrection ref, by the way) is explained somewhere in MGS. Basically, Naomi found him and immediately put him in the Cyborg Ninja suit, which acted as a sort of "life support system".

cbwing0:
MGS2 has the thickest, most intricate and twisty plot I've ever seen in a movie or game.
All of MGS2 was "real" (as opposed to a VR sim), it was just set up to be one big elaborate training exercise for Raiden. That's why there were so many similarities between the Big Shell and Shadow Moses. Everyone was acting and making decisions of their own free will, but just about everything that happened was planned by the Patriots to have fallen out that way. As for Fortune, she wasn't dodging the bullets. When they (the Patriots) "employed" her in this big charade, they implanted a device on her that made bullets miss and grenades not go off. She didn't know though, and was just convinced it was her "psychic powers" that were doing this.
In regards to the final battle, remember that everyone was standing on the now-surfaced Arsenal Gear when it started moving and it crashed into seaside New York (it was originally stationed a few miles out with the Big Shell as cover).
I just want to know what happened with Solid Snake and Liquid/Ocelot after L/O took off inside the MG Ray and Solid jumped after him.

I only have one question: How in the whole wide world did Snake jump off Big Shell, follow MG Ray all the way down, plant a tracer on said MG Ray and make it back to Raiden for the moral of the story?

<How did Grey Fox burst into flames and disappear, only to be 'revived' later? Did they somehow adult clone his ashes with his memories? The official story is that he stepped on a mine and got owned.

Even for him that's pretty tough. I guess he could have:

A: Followed MG Ray down to the ocean floor, all the while holding his breath.
B: Try and fail to open MG Ray, still holding breath.
C: Plant tracking device on MG Ray, still holding breath.
D: By now he's probably 20 miles from the city, he comes to the surface, grabs several seagulls, inflate them using his lungs of steel, break off their legs and (using bits of his greasy mullet for glue) put them together and use them to paddle back to where the Big Shell crashed.
E: Get out of the harbor, hijack a car, ride through town while being chased by cops, shake them off somehow, go to wherever Rose is, kidnap her and take her to Raiden, who's fight (For me) lasted 5 minutes.

Why would he just plant a tracking device? If he's gonna go to that much trouble following it, why not just destroy it? He could have climbed around to various spots on RAY, planting C4 explosives along the way (for all you get, you never end up using them anywhere in the game), swam out a good distance, and detonated the explosives thereby blowing RAY to tiny bits. Then it's just a matter of grabbing a large halibut under each arm and pointing them in the general direction of the shore.
Simple as that.

Oh, I just thought of another question: How did Solidus lose his eye while flying the Harrier in his first fight with Raiden? My guess is he was trying to fly the plane and cut paper at the same time and was never warned as a child against running, playing, or flying with scissors.

He didn't have any C4 on him. He was a prisoner shortly before.

Oh, well there goes my theory. The halibut part still fits, though.

I thought he didn't destroy ray because he wanted to find out just as badly as ocelot did about the Patriots... I forget, though. (NO I'M NOT BACK! I'm just an echo. Wanna Balloon?)

Every 4-out-of-5 theory's about MGS get shot down. It's tough, don't feel bad.

Maybe, but why didn't he blow it after he found out the location was bogus?

Good question. Probably a nasty bang when Raiden shot the Harrier for the 50th time.

You gotta realize that sometimes things in video games repeat in different angles... SO really, Raiden only hit the harrier ONCE but it sorta showed it over and over again from alternate realities in the game. Either that, or that harrier was just incredibly strong... But, I mean, if it weren't, it wouldn't have made for a good game, I guess.

Hahahahaha!

You know, it's probably tradition, the Harrier in MGS1 could take about 10 hits.
