What's the Hardest Game You've Every Played?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

The last mission of Driver has got to be one of the hardest things I've every played... had to resort to hacking the setting files for the "level" to get it finished (PC version).

Hardest game... hmm... hands down, F-Zero GX. Although beating Ikaruga on hard without dying takes a small miracle. I hear R-Type Final is pretty tough.

Those of you discussing Shenmue... could you describe it for me a bit further? If it is the game I believe you might be talking about, I have a friend who absolutely loved it. Somehow I doubt this, but it is sounding eerily similar.

I love that game!!! Event 37 was hard. You have to be Ness and have to KO Samus, Kirby, Starfox, Cptn Falcon and Falco with only one life and they get harder as it gets through. I HATED CAPTAIN FALCON ON THAT EVENT! (I think that was event 37). The one where you had to KO both Nanas (one of the iceclimbers) was also very hard!

I honestly don't believe anyone who said they had no trouble with Exdeath and yet had trouble with any boss in FF6... I'd have to see it... You must have stumbled on some secret (Game Shark Doesn't Count.) Is exdeath an undead character? I know at least one game has teh last boss be undead and you just heal them to kill them. I tried for a long time, but just couldn't do it... Kefka and sephiroth, had no problem killing.

Castlevania: Dracula X.

The levels are hard enough, but the bosses? Ugh.

Well, I wasn't EXACTLY that good at RPG's back then as I am now, so I would probably have no problem with Kefka... I haven't played it in a long time though. Exdeath I beat with Game Genie, so, yeah, that didn't count.

Here's a tough one: Sonic Spinball. The final boss battle is utterly rediculous. After you climb up to top to fight Eggman, if you accidently break a window in the ship (either by accident or Eggman sending you through it) you have to climb all the way up AGAIN to attempt to get some more hits in before flying out the window AGAIN and having to reclimb... after about half an hour I just gave up. :stressed:

EDIT: Cannot forget Actraiser. I would have been happy had they left the action stages out and had been completely a simulation game. The action stages are REALLY hard. The second one completely took out the simulation aspect. :stressed:

I think there is a gimick to Exdeath, but I don't know what it is. As far as I know, he's not supposed to be that tough. (Tough, yes, but not as tough as you mentioned).

And on the topic: the Black Rabbit in Sword of Mana. It's actually easier if you aren't at level 99 and the like (bosses become stronger as you do).

I used cheats last night to get to the final boss in Castlevania: Dracula X.

Rediculously difficult. The battle is fought on top of a bunch of pillars, (if you fall off you die) and Dracula is constatly teleporting randomly in the HUGE room making it impossible to predict where he's going to appear next. Plus, you can only hit Dracula above the pendant but below the top of his head. Anywhere else won't damage him.

Whatever moron at Konami came up with the concept for the Final Battle in CVX needs to be put out of his misery.

At least I DID beat Dracula... after a couple of hours.

Actually, the very first ever Mario game was technically Donkey Kong for the Gameboy.

Although at the time he wasn't called Super Mario yet.

EDIT: But Donkey Kong was a pretty hard game as well. It took me a year to beat it. (One of the first games I ever owned)

Oddly enough, I find that some old games I found difficult as a child (Super Mario 2, for example), I found almost effortless in more recent years. This is curious; why would it be so?

I play very few video games, so it isn't like I got more practice. Also, I can't believe my hand eye coordination skills improved that much. What could cause an increase in skill? I have no idea, I just found this somewhat interesting, and decided that it did somewhat apply.

It seems that the older games are much harder than present day games. Games have gotten easier over the years.

Though it doesn't compare to some games which are litereally impossible to beat, what about Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance on European Extreme mode? That's darn near impossible to beat... I barely got to Fortune on REGULAR extreme mode (I was on "get caught, lose instantly" mode, mind you) Olga was a pain in Extreme... I don't even want to THINK about her on European Extreme, not to mention Fatman... If you call european extreme mode easy, you are either lying, or are a true video game guru...

BTW, the first mario game would be DK for the ARCADE... Long before the gameboy was even invented. The first mario game where he was called mario was Mario Brothers in the arcade, followed by Super Mario Brothers in the Arcade. If you can find an arcade SMB, it's a great find... Much closer to the real SMB2 (aka "lost levels" on All-Stars) It's like SMB on the NES, only beefier... More levels, harder levels...

In the Arcade, the DK character was referred to only as "Jump Man" I dont' think he became mario until mario brothers... I must say... We owe our very hobby to a Japanese italian new yorker plumber and an angry ape. The video game industry was about to die before Miyamoto came on the scene.

I think I have a possible reason for this.

Initially, video games had to be relatively short and repetative. Consider Pac-man: you have identical levels that merely change enemy patterns every time. Due to limited resources, there wasn't much room for ingenuity, depth or length. Therefore, the only way to make a game last a person's time was to make it extremely difficult.

Now, with so many more technological capabilities, this reason no longer exists. As such, most games have easier modes, as most people don't like being constantly frustrated by areas that have to be done nearly perfectly. Personally, I like this change, mainly for the reasons of ingenuity, depth and length.

I have a new game to add to the list, because I just got it yesterday...

Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PS2 has just claimed the title for the hardest game I've ever played. So far, I haven't even made it 20% through the first level. Now that's hard.

Yeah I tried to play that with my cousin a few weeks back. I suck hard at that game. We only ever made it to the second level, and then pretty much died instantly. So hard.
EDIT: I still think the first Contra is harder.

There was a NES game that I could never reach the end of the first level - no matter how hard I tried. The guy had a huge axe, and there was an anime slate at the beginning ... I think it involved a fairy. Anyway, that's the hardest game I played. That and Top Gun .... I never could land. :sniffle:
