I watched part of the first episode, it wasn't for me. All the gay jokes were kinda a turn-off. I swear that one guy is Momiji. o.o

It's probably the best comedy currently being fansubbed. It's often very funny and it's not as offensive as it may sound -- I found Suzumiya Haruhi considerably worse. Nevertheless, it does skate on very thin ice, and it's not for everybody.

well, if watch a little more or read the manga you see that it's great. As for the guy stuff, it really isn't much, they don't do anything unapropate and the story is goes on about the club rather that about that. I suggest watching at least a few eps before deciding anything.

Also about Suzumiya Haruhi, I am still in a debate on if I should watch it or not, I did watch some eps from a friend.

here are some more stuff on the anime:

Ouran high school host club:
Haruhi is a poor common girl who won a scholarship to Ohran Academy. Since Haruhi's mother died, her father raised her. In result she has no interests in fashion and acts like a boy.
One day she tries to find a quiet place to study instead finds the Ouran high school host club. After getting there she breaks a $8 million yen vase. Haruhi is force to pay off the vase by joining them and becoming a host as well. Not knowing that she is a girl the members of the host club dress her as a male student. She make such a handsome boy but the member soon find out that Haruhi is actually a girl. Since haruhi needs to pay of her debut she remains playing a male host to get comtomers.

Oh I didn't realize there was a thread in this section. There is a huge thread going in the manga section if anyone wants more info (or screenshots).

I like this anime, it's definatly my favorite of the new ones that came out recently (although I do prefer the manga). The voices actors they chose are excellent, and they've managed to keep the look of the manga even those the anime style is really different.

There is some slight yaoi references (mostly with the twins acting all lovey in order to make their customers go crazy), and there is the whole fact that Haruhi is basically deceiving everyone in the school other then the Host Club. I know some people also have a problem with how Haruhi deceives the girls that come to the club just to pay off the debt of breaking the vase. Oh and there is quite a bit of cross dressing (although not as much as in the manga).

There are also some wierd yuri references is some chapters whenever these 3 girls from an all girls school show up. Well it's not really yuri as it is that they think all guys are worthless and should be ignored, which therefore makes women best (in their minds).

As Tancos said this show is not as offensive as it sounds at first. With very little violence, and fanservice (and little bad langauge depending on the fansub you watch) it's one of the cleaner shows out there right now.

:Edit:
Oh jeez. I just noticed the name is spelled wrong in this thread. The correct spelling is Ouran.

Okay, thanks you guys. I've been wondering how this show is content wise too. I looks really cute, but I've heard some stuff that make it sound really iffy. Epsecially about the twins lol.

I fixed the title, Myrrh. You don't have to have nightmares anymore. XD

After seeing this anime-- one the one hand it's quite clean. There is no nudity that I can think of. We do see Haruhi in her bra on one or two occasions (The obligatory "Hey there Man Haruhi, I'm just going to burst in while you're changing clothes and discover that you aren't a man!") but the bra is modest. . . as far as bras go.

Because of the set up, you get some expected awkward situations, such as the episode where Haruhi is accidentally pushed and kisses another girl (that girl, of course, thinks she's a guy.) The big turn off for this series, though, is the twins. Whether the twins have some homosexual tendencies, I can't say for certain. Personally, I think that 98% of their "closeness" is an act put on for the other members and the other 2% is a misinterpretation of their closeness. They were once eachother's only friends. It makes sense that they should be so close. Still, the act itself and the fan girls' dillusional fantasies are a draw back to the title. Also, there is one episode in which someone throws Haruhi onto a bed and kneels over her to make a point, but nothing happens.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. I'm a big fan of Ouran, and I'm getting ready to re-watch the first 16 episodes and then watch the last ten.

The twins don't really bother me at all. At first I was like, "Whoa, now hang on a m-- oh. It's facetious. Hah." I'm also positive they're just putting on a show for their customers.

I didn't find it funny. I don't know...maybe it was the highly exaggerated personalities in the first episode that turned me off, but it's not my taste. Other people seem to like it though. *shruuug*

I'm a big fan of the series; I finished it with my boyfriend over Thanksgiving break and we both adored it. The story, the style, the premise alone are great; and heck, has there ever been a show that was more fun to look at?

Granted, the homosexual references did make me scream "TWINCEST IS WRONG!" several times, but I don't think it was meant to be seriously pro-homosexuality, and I think that's key. As others have said, it's part of the integral idea of giving the fangirls what they want (actually, I think the show has a lot to say about the ridiculousness of "fangirling" and is rather satirical about it), hence it wasn't offensive to me at all. I did want to kill Honey-kun a few times, though (but that's mostly because I can't stand Momiji-like characters ^^;;)

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I could see why someone would want to stay away.

They are. The more aggressive of the twins has a crush on the sole girl.

I saw the first three episodes... ahh! It's so cute! I love Tamaki! He's such a drama king.

Yeah, you guys are right, the twins are annoying. However, they still get mad at Tamaki when he calls them homos.

I think the show is so cute. The twins can get annoying, but for me it's easy to deal with, that they are just putting on a show. If that weren't the case, I'd probably stay away from it. It is hard to introduce someone else to the show, with all that going on though. XD

You are so right I totally forgot about that. That alone proves that they are just playing, because they got REALLY mad at Tamaki when he called them that. (Well so did Kyoya, and his revenge is just as great as what the twins do.)

Yeah X3 It helps that he's insanely guilible. He totally fell for all of their revenge plans.
By the way... what's up with Mori and Honey? I thought Mori thought of him like a little brother, but then I saw the cavity episode and I was offically freaked out...

Dude! Seriously! The other Host Club guys are spoiled, but he puts them all to shame! He's a complete brat! I'm sorry Honey fans... but from a realistic standpoint, any seventeen year old that actaully acted like that is not correctly developed psycologically and needs to see a developmental psychologicist imo. Not. Even. Kidding. X3

Oh! And the twins are actaully pretty likable when they're not acting like they're obsessed with each other haha.

So the way I look at it:
All the real "implications" are through fangirls' eyes, so of course that's how they're going to take it. Mori never says anything outright along those lines. He just takes his loyalty and family service to Honey's family very seriously, and currently values that relationship above all others. Just because he'd rather spend time with Honey rather than get a girlfriend doesn't mean he's gay for him or anything. In fact, assuming something like that actually cheapens the bond between them, imo. But, fangirls being fangirls sometimes just can't see that between two guys.

Well and the anime totally overplays the whole "Mori is devoted to Honey" thing. In the manga Mori had a reason for refusing that girl, and it had nothing to do with "he's totally devoted to Honey so he can't have a girlfriend" Also in the manga he and Honey don't act so much like a freaky fangirl couple. XD I think they exaggerated it for the laughs in the anime. They also make fun of fangirls a LOT more in the anime then they do in the manga. The whole anime is practically a pun on fangirls and their obsessions.

Woah, another thread! XD

I love this anime and manga (manga more than the other, but this isn't the time for that discussion!). I do have to agree that some relationships were overplayed in the anime like the Kaoru/Hikaru deal and the Mori/Honey thing... and I was disappointed that so much focus was placed on Tamaki/Haruhi and not on the other possible couples like the manga does.

Anyhow, I finally got around to watching the last few episodes (20-26)... and I have to say I wasn't entirely that impressed. Some gags in the anime just got old. And the last two episodes, gah! Yay for butchering characterization.

Okay, so it wasn't entirely that horrible. I was just annoyed that
Kyouya's dad was weird... in the manga he was impressed by the host club's festival display. The sheer cheesiness of it also annoyed me. The whole point of this anime/manga is kinda to make fun of cheesy shoujo cliches and the last episode felt alot more like it had turned into a cheesy show instead.
Oh well - you win some you lose some. Good ending despite it all. XD

Wow, I'm really suprised....I actually thought the end was pretty good! And I really, really liked the anime; it's one of my all-time favs. But I'm just getting into the manga, so perhaps that has something to do with it. Yeah it was cheesy and goofy and satirical, but I think I really craved that at some level. It was just great to have something goofy and fun to watch that didn't have a whole lot of grave, symbolic meaning.

I thought the anime ending was pretty good too. But I went into it knowing that it was going to be different from the manga, so I was able to take it more at face value I think.

Personally I think the anime and the manga both have their good points. The biggest good point about the manga is that it's still being released! Yay! :thumb: But the anime really did a good job bringing to life some many of the funny parts of the manga. I was rewatching it last night to find a quote for my signature, and I was laughing almost constantly as I skipped from episode to episode. There is just so much funny stuff in that series. From Kyoya's pie graphs in ... I think episode 3, to the episode where Mori gets totally dissed, to the Halloween episode where even the twins scream in fear.

The anime really did skimp on some characterization but there is some stuff that I think it actually handled better. The Alice in Wonderland episode would be an example of this. I hated that chapter of the manga, but in the anime they tyed it together with Haruhi's life so it made more sense.

Ah yes, the Alice in Wonderland episode is a great episode in the anime. It was kinda boring and pointless in the manga.

For me the highlight of the anime is watching the characters move. The animators do a great job on most of the episodes giving them quirky movements to make it fun. =] Though they did slack off in the middle of the series a little....

I'm kind of with Ashley: Ouran's ending was one of the most satisfying of the three series that I was following from the summer/fall season. The animation and story flow particularly for the last two episodes I thought was brilliant. Hurrah, Ouran!

Out of curiosity, how many volumes of the manga does the anime cover. I'd like to pick up where the anime left off. . . but I'm not really sure where that it.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. Does anyone know the story behind Haruhi's dad? I could take the twins pretending to be overly affectionate in order to make the fangirls swoon, since it was obvious they were faking it as part of their role as hosts, but when Haruhi's dad waltzed in wearing a dress I was seriously perturbed.

Is he supposed to be a transvestite? And if so is it a psychological quirk or is he just an actor playing the role of a woman? I watched a really badly subtitled version and they didn't actually translate what they called him into English. I think they used a Chinese word - rensomethingorother. I'm thinking of not watching any more episodes because of him.

I've seen Ouran and found it enjoyably odd. I think I can like one, light-hearted Shojo comedy out of all the darker series I watch.

Haruhi's dad's a weird one to watch, I'll grant you. If anything, he's still suffering from his late wife's death. When she died, he said he could never love another woman, so his habits took a turn for the stranger side. Not much is made of this past face-value humor, so I doubt there's any dark political or moral agenda on the creator's end.

Actually, there's a few elements in Ouran that could be wrote off as questionable or offensive. What you have to realize is that it's parody]Ouran, I wouldn't say I've dabbled in any Romanic-Comedy Anime, but I've mindlessly browsed enough of Wikipedia to notice what's being made fun of.

That's pretty much it. In the manga they show a scene from shortly after Haruhi's mom died with her dad talking with his boss at the time. He was a labor worker or shelf stocker at that time. I think if I remember correctly he said told his boss he wasn't gay but he could never love another woman, so he would never get married again. I'm not sure why that caused him to start cross-dressing, they don't really explain his rationalization for that. Actually neither the manga nor the anime has ever confirmed that he is gay, he just seems to love cross-dressing (and works at ... a dubious place). But he doesn't expect Haruhi to call him "Mom" or anything like that.

As for where the anime ends in the manga, I have bad news for you. They skipped a lot of chapters in the manga so they could show certain things in the anime. There are anime episodes that are based on manga chapters that haven't even been released in the US yet. I think the story follows pretty close to volumes 1 and 2 but after that it starts skipping a lot. Although personally I think you should read all the manga anyway because they cut out some scenes of the longer chapters and you'll get a lot more of the characterizations. (Plus it's usually just as funny to read the scenes as to watch them.) ;)

So Haruhi's father is supposedly dressing that way to be sure no woman would ever try to marry him again? It makes sense in an oddball sort of a way, but then the whole series is kind of quirky. Thanks Fish and Chips and Myrrhlynn for clearing that one up for me!

I finished this series last week..and I really really loved it!! I have to say that at first I thought the twins would ruin the story for me...but by the end of the series they were my favorite characters!!

Tamaki is really hilarious!! And he is really heartwarming!! ^_^ I loved the last few episodes with him..

still...part of me wishes the relationship with Haruhi and one of the twins would have been touched up upon more.. I will have to read the manga sometime!! :3

Interestingly enough, the reason why Honey reminds you guys of Momiji is because they have the same voice actress ^_^v
