Verticly scrolling ship shooters

Postby Lightbringer » Fri Jun 20, 2003 1:03 pm

Has anybody been like this .....
The following is a dramatization :

Walks pasts an arcade machine..... looks over to see a single air plane moveing back and forth across teh screen dodgeing a gazillion bullets then unleashing a devistating bomb attack that clears the screen, while a thousand more aliens or whatever apear on the chaotic and hypnotic background that whips past ..................

Anyway
Love them virticle shooters. Anybody else like em? Aero Fighters is great ( all of em)

Star Force was my fav. It's about as mind-numbing as Tetris or Dr. Robotnic's Mean Bean Machine - but fun none the less.

I don't do arcade games much (I'm cheap and I have little income), but I love the genre for the PC. There are some good ones, but none of the names come to mind right now.

Used to play loads of those things as a kid -- the Japanese ones tended to be horizontal scrolling... whenever you got hit you died instantly and lost all the extra weapons and prizes you picked up. There were some good ones out on the Mega Drive .. Aero Blasters is a shining example, as is Zero Wing (the game that started the AYB craze)

verical srolling shooters are pretty cool. yep. I don't go to arcades much anymore, but I know the feeling. I have been considering buying Ikaruga for the GameCube. I've read up that it was also on the Dreamcast platform. This game is more of a space fighter, but same idea.

tyrian IS old. it was back in those VGA days.

but at the time of its release, it was the most beautiful and graphical game ever created for PC. it supported Sound Blaster 16 and above, so many visual effects like explosions and such that seem so 'merged' with the background that it feels so real after playing for some time, hidden secrets levels, and let's not forget ingame humour! :D what a funny game...

and only a Pentium 1 could make it so smooth and full graphics. it's like Freelancer with Doom 3 merged in today's standards!

too bad only few gamers know about it these days...

I liked the arcade version of Raiden/Raiden II, but the SNES version of it isn't as good. I still like to play 1942. That game is classic. For real old school vertical shooter action, I play Xevious. Then there are the really old school shooters with no scrolling like Galaga and Space Invaders. Those rock too.

Who can forget horizontal shooters like Gradius? Gradius is awesome. I have Gradius games for GB, GBA, NES, and SNES. I love the GBA Gradius Galaxies. Great old school 2D shooter action!

I can't remember the name, (I think it was similar to 1942 or 1945, or whatever)...

You had a plane, when you'd shoot special grouped planes (all of them) you'd get a shot upgrade... the more you picked up the wider the spread got... stuff would hide under buildings/trees, etc.... typical boss-battle stuff, etc.

Bought the PC version of it years and years ago.... it stank in so many ways it wasn't funny, poor controls, didn't mach the arcade game, etc....

Wonder if I could find it for Mame online somewhere (if I could only remember the name).... hmmm....

Raptor was cool for the PC and Super R Type was my fav. on a console (SNES). Aero Fighters was a great arcade shooter. Where have the simple side-scrolling shooters like Contra/Rush n Attack gone. I still dig the old Contra way better than Shattered Soldier btw.

Aero Fighters is my favorite vertical scrolling shooter, although I do prefer the horizontal variety.

Out of those, my favorite is probably the Macross game for the SNES. You could change at any time during the game, with different shot types for Guardian, Battloid, and Fighter modes. Other scrollers include Gradius, Darius, and R-Type. I especially like Gradius 3, because you could pick your upgrades, and it had a cool soundtrack.

I haven't really played any scrolling shooters since the SNES days, although if another one came out I might try it.

I remember wasting away quarter after quarter at those things. Personally, I've never liked space invaders.... I found it very dull. The Raiden games were fun.1942 was awesome. The Contra games were some of my favs. I still remember the old cheat-code for the first one. ^^ (That code saved me some quarters.) Metal Slug is great, but hard. I still play R-type for the SNES. Gradius was another of my favs. Raptor was one of my favorite old-school PC games. (I still remember the main theme tune.) I have Galaga/Galaxian (sp?) on my PC to waste time while I'm on Aim.

Btw, Andyroo, Ikaruga is a great GCN title.... it's very challenging.

Kinda nice to see this dug up....

I remembered the name of the game above I couldnt' remember. SkyShark.

I've got something new that I've been playing, written by someone in Japan. It's a pretty good vertical shooter... Parsec47.... it's randomized so you won't get the same enemies each time you play (though there are some basic patterns you'll pick up). The graphics have a vector look to them, but it works, even for simple shapes and colors. You can find it at:

The Aerofighter and 194X series are still some of my alltime favorites video games. I've got them all on my emulators, but admitidlly, they lose something when there is not a quarter on the line if you die.

Side scrollers are great too, I dumped many quarters into the Super R-type machine at the local Kwik Shop.

I downloaded it and played for a little while. It is a good game, with a great soundtrack, which is unusual for games of this type. I got to parsec 31...I'm guessing that there 47, so I got close to beating the game.

Actually it goes quite higher (not sure where the max is). I've got an 8 on the Easy one, haven't been able to break 40 on the Normal.... never passed 10 on Hard or eXtreme.

Raptor was cool... have it around here somewhere (can't remember where I got it though, think it might have been a PC Games disk or something.

I was always a big fan of Xevious also.... one of the few really good games on my Atari 7800, played that thing to death.
