The Official Nintendo Wii (Revolution) Thread

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

On top of that Wii's service supports non broadband connections which should be fine for some games but for an MMO it's deffinetly not.

Hmm... did they mention this support recently? I don't remember hearing anything about non-broadband support. I assumed it would be a broadband only system, because it's likely to be Wi-fi only.... just like the Nintendo DS. Not to mention, they announced that Wiiconnet24 thing.

That's a good point. And you're right, a third party developer most likely would charge '-';;

Maybe users without a broadband connection could still do some things like download updates and stuff, but I don't think it would work that well for actual online gameplay. I bet people who don't already have a wireless connection set up would be required to buy some sort of airwave converter thing like cable users had to do with the DS. If I recall, it was rather expensive too, so that would be a bummer for some. No use in making assumptions, though, so we'll see.

So, apparently the VC games will cost between 5 and 10 dollars? That really doesn't seem quite right to me. I think that if they priced old NES games at .99 to 1.99 they would make a killing on titles that they haven't made money on in a decade or so. SNES titles between .99 and 4.99, and N64 games between 4.99 and 9.99. I think those prices would feel fair to consumers, and be priced at a low enough point such that people would DL them in massive quantities.

Plus I think that they really need to have low prices on NES and SNES games in order to pull people off of thier ROMs that they have grown to love. I'm pretty sure that pricing them at 5$ at lowest won't be pulling anyone away other than those that simply want to pay for them.

Five and ten dollars?! I can get the actual cartridges at flea markets for cheaper than that! Geez, and I thought Sony was a bunch of money grubbers...

I've already heard about that, but, who knows? It's still pretty early, so they might change it (or maybe some monthly fee kind of thing?). :/

That's grim news, but I'm with Myoti, it's still too early to tell, and they may change it or lower prices or something. We'll see.

Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade model is already priced pretty much the same and is very successful so it makes sense they'd go in that range. Pretty much every game on there from classics like Robotron and Gauntlet to newer ones like Geometry Wars and Marble Blast Ultra are about $5.

I think it's a reasonable price model honestly for good SNES games but it should be slightly lower for NES games maybe around $2-3. I would pay $5 for Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, and Donkey Kong Country 2 for sure. The only problem is that people have been so used to playing these games on emulators for years. I don't think there's much Nintendo can do about that really besides capping it off at $5.

We could possibly see it go lower on some games or such, if it's succesful enough. I recall someone mentioning it'd be great if the N had special offer on games (like giving a few free games with the purchase of the system, etc.).

Someone from the Nintendo Forums sent Nintendo an E-mail concerning the graphics of Wii.

Here is the whole post that he posted at the forums.

My message was about the spec information for the Wii with the Gi issue and stuff like that. I also asked them to compair their graphics to the xbox360 and the ps3 and i made sure to tell them its not a purchase descision but a want. Here was their response.

Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

At this time, most of the information you are asking for is for developers, and we are not providing it to anyone but developers. All of the information that we currently have to share can be found on http://www.nintendo.com, so check it out.

As for the graphics, we are confident that the Nintendo Wii will definitely be as good or better than our competitor's systems.

I hope this is helpful.

Sincerely,

Nintendo of America Inc.
Sharon Matheny

O_o should i be excited? Or is nintendo just pulling my leg again?

interesting, nya?

As a mac opponent, and a general not liker of Apple's aura, I say this blows... I am a sony fanboy, but Nintendo was my backup... They were like the other company I'd buy from... Well, not if Apple owns them, on matter of principle... It's time to drag the wii to the trash can... you know, to eject the disc (since wii will no longer have an eject button)

That's not gonna happen. Nintendo is doing too well right now they don't need to bought out. They're a Japanese company a very Japanese company they're not going to let themselves be bought out by a western company. Besides Nintendo is not hurting at all so there's no reason for them to want to be bought.

If there's any shred of truth here to this rumor it might be some kind of possible talks about cooperation such as pairing iTunes with the Wii or something along those lines.

While I do agree that the Apple-Nintendo merger is a rumor, I have thought before now that if Nintendo were to ever pair up with another company, it would be Apple, and vice versa. They just seem to have the same vibe.

And if you ask me, the Wii font and color scheme (in the teaser video, logo, etc.) are very reminiscent of the iPod. An intentional move by Nintendo to make themselves look cool like Apple and look simple and user-friendly like Apple.

But a buyout won't happen anytime soon.

They said this in the year 2000 too, that Apple and Nintendo were going to merge, and nothing ever came of it. Just a bunch of unfounded rumors again, and I agree with Rogie and Jimbo. Nintendo would NEVER allow itself to be bought by an American company.

I think it would be interesting if Apple and Nintendo merged... but I think I would rather have the separate. When mergers happen the original companies fade away... which is sad. T_T

In this, Iwata says that the Wii processor will have 1/6 to 1/4 more power than the processors in consoles that support HDTV.

This means, that the processor is 1/4 to 1/6 times more powerful than if it supported HD.

Old news, but still.

Taken from Nintendo Forums:

The pair talk Wii, reveal a couple of interesting tidbits, and discount a couple of rumours.

Speaking to Electronic Gaming Monthly, Nintendo's overall President Satoru Iwata and game designer legend Shigeru Miyamoto revealed a couple of pieces of interesting information. Miyamoto confirmed that Nintendo are not planning to build a microphone into the Wii-mote due to the fact this would make it too expensive. A headset would be better, he claimed, though if made would not be connected to the controller.

The company is apparently still seeing if they can improve the graphics of retro games for release on the Wii's Virtual Console service, while Shigsy also confirmed the company was looking into providing Connect24 bonuses for Twilight Princess. Downloadable dungeons? Extra weapons? We can only speculate.

Iwata said he realised Western third-party developers won't develop games that look the same on the PS3 and Xbox 360 - the latter two versions will of course be running on more powerful hardware. Though intriguingly he commented that the Wii's processors have 1/4 to 1/6 more power than the processors in consoles that support HDTV. He also reaffirmed his view that the Wii will get more exclusive third-party support than the GameCube, which was lacking in this area.

Commenting on Nintendo's goal to expand the video games market worldwide, he said the West will be harder to do this in than Japan, though developers everywhere are excited by the prospect of the Wii.

I don't think that would amount to much. Also, why didn't they just say "the Wii's processors have 1/4 to 1/6 more power than the processors in the Xbox 360 and the PS3"? Why HD in general?

Not sure.

Some people think he means it's 1/4 to 1/6 more powerful than the cpu's in PS3 and XBox360, others think that he means not supporting HD frees up that much more power.

I'm not sure which one he means, but if he means the first, then it I think it supports what the ATI person said when he said something like "The graphics you saw at E3 were just the tip of the iceberg" and Iwata when he said "you won't be able to tell the difference between Wii graphics and others' graphics on a regular television."

This is because on an HDTV (which Wii doesn't support) makes for more high-def textures, which to alot, means better graphics, but on a regular television, all the textures look the same, making the graphics on PS3, XBox360, and Wii all have graphics that look the same.

Possibly. Even if part of it was negative attention (which some was), something so different is likely to get quite a bit of attention.

Yes. Wii had a 5-6 (or more) hour line just to get close enough to see it.

XBox360 and PS3 both had around 10 minute lines.
