Movies that make you go... "huh??"

Postby Scarecrow » Sun May 28, 2006 4:15 pm

I just watched this weird movie the other night called Stay which was a pretty weird movie and then has one of those endings where they leave you :eh: Anyway, after thinking about the ending the whole movie eventually made sense but I was just curious what other movies you have seen that just left your brain hurting for a few days.

Here are some ones I really thought were good movies that really drew you in then kind just left you hanging to figure it all out or eventually came together at the end:

Donnie Darko
Stay
Memento
Jacobs Ladder
Mulholland Drive

Others?

Ermn... both 2001 a Space Odyssey and 2010 a Space odyssey were... PAIN to watch. I also didn't like The Adromeda (SP) strain... I had the flu at the time when I watched it and it didn't really make much sense at the time either. On the anime end "Cat Soup" In some parts doesn't make much sense at all, but I suppose that was the creator's intention as he said something about it along those lines.

A Korean film called "Rules of Dating" had an ending that made absolutely no sense. I had to think about it for a few hours before I sort of got it but I'm not sure

There were many films I thought were Pointless but that's a different thing

Ah yes... 2001 A Space Odyssey... I'm surprised you even bothered with the sequal after that. I never finished the movie though cause I was bored out of my mind so I only made it about halfway... but the beginning was really weird and then I read how it ended. I have no intrest in seeing the second.

Forgot about MirrorMask... not really much of a mindbender but it was pretty strange.

Any movie by Andrei Tarkovsky
Solaris
Donnie Darko

Although I dislike 2001: A space oddessey, I do admire the movie for its slow pace and visuals and restrained acting. The rest of the movie is less interesting.

I agree on the Mirromask comment. I loved that movie, though, for the simple reason that you had to kinda think through it. It was just like that.

Its quite simple.

[spoiler]It was about a man dealing with the loss of his wife while being 'probed' by aliens (though not 'probed' in the usual alien abduction sense of the word). He (and the crew) came face to face with an alien intelligence so great (the planet Solaris) that it is unable to understand or communicate with humans, so it scans their memories and create beings with which they can interact in order to learn more about us. The main character's wife (who commited suicide) came to life and he eventually went with it because his sense of loss was too great to cope with, however she is not the real wife, but just a copy made out of his memories of her. In the end Kelvin is 'absorbed' by the planet and becomes a new being of sorts without physically evolving]

Wasn't "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" done by Mystery Science Theater 3000 at one point?
Here's my weird one:

Donnie Darko
Jacob's Ladder
Fight Club
Machinist
Memento
End of Eva (ugh... Made me sick both times I watched it...)
Pi

I liked most of those, unsure about fight club and I didn't like EoE or Pi... I wonder if anyone else picked up on the "216 digit number" thing... (216 is 6x6x6, and NO I didn't get that from Left Behind...) Do kabalists actually believe that?

Now, these aren't movies per se, but

Serial Experiments Lain
Boogiepop Phantom

I started to watch Texnolyse, but couldn't get into it, though I've heard it's just as trippy as Lain.

Yes it was nice for the first 15 minutes but I thought that movie was in need of some MAJOR editing. The special effects were great and stuff but that movie could have been about an hour and a half shorter and you wouldn't have missed anything. Do you seriously need to see a space ship landing on the moon for 20 minutes? And just when you think "FINALLY, its about to actually land", it turns out theres a big crater in the moon and the thing just keeps going down for another 5 minutes.
