Anime inspired by American movies

Postby rocklobster » Sat May 20, 2006 4:39 am

What movies do you think inspired anime. Here are some that I think of:
  • Blade Runner--Bubblegum Crisis (Haven't seen it yet, but The Anime Companion said it did), Ghost in the Shell, Silent Mobius
  • The Matrix--.hack//sign
  • Star Wars--Outlaw Star
  • Star Trek--Star Blazers, Crest/Banner of the Stars

There are some Steve McQueen movies that could.
Bullit: Could have inspired Initial D with the car chase on the streets of San Francisco
There's a movie that Mr McQueen starred in where he was a bonty hunter that could have inspired Gunsmith Cats. Also he starred in a TV western show about a young bonty hunter called Wanted: Dead or Alive.
What TV shows that could have insired anime too.

EDIT: Oh sorry, misread the post.

But I think some Bruce Lee movies inspired Spike's style of fighting on Cowboy Bebop.

It was. There is a poster of Bruce Lee can be seen in front of the doctor's office in "The Real Folk Blues".

Spike fighting style is Jeet Kun Do, which is the same martial arts style Bruce Lee pioneered.

In ep 2 of Cowboy Bebop, they play homage to the fight scene in Game of Death.

Yoshiyuki Tomino took a bit from Star Wars when making Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta.
Highlander: Vengeance is coming out sometime this year, there hasnt been any news for about a year though.

I forgot Starship Troopers. The makers of Blue Gender must've seen that and thought, "You know what's missing here? Some mechs!"

Just about ALL of Cowboy Bebop. We have:

Desperado (episode 1)
Game of Death (episode 2)
The Crow (episode 5)
Enter the Dragon (episode 8)
Aliens (episode 11)
Batman (episode 22)

...and more I'm not familiar with, or haven't caught onto yet.

I wonder if in a way Noir might be inspired by La Femme Nikita.

Don't forget about Bambi, the movie that inspired Osamu Tezuka's art style, and practically brought about anime in the first place. ;)
