Silent Hill 3

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

LOL, I guess it really depends on everyone's background eh? I'm not accustomed to horror like Silent Hill while some aren't to Asian horror. My only gripe with FF is the battle system--it makes me *want* to look for ghosts. Not to mention you get bonuses for every successful snapshot.

Now back to Silent Hill before this turns into a FF thread... XD

Silent Hill 3, I'm learning as I play 2, is much more consise... Much less wandering, a lot fewer long empty hallways... I like how tight it is, because I feel like I got the same gameplay in 2 hours that SH2 is taking 8 hours to do...

Lol! and the fan base are complaining how short SH3 is (considering it's rushed). Though, I do slightly feel it's a bit rushed. But that's understandable knowing that Konami wanted to wrap up the main plot SH1 spawned.

Silent Hill 3 has a somewhat uplifting ending. I got really depressed after I finished SH2... Still depressed...

SH2: The leave ending isn't too bad... got that one the 1st time around.... I've read about some of the others... I guess the easiest one to get (for many people) sounded pretty depressing.

It's not the ending that depressed me... It's what happens just before the end, and the whole backstory and the last boss, and some other things...

I've got a SH-related story to share here.

I work in a hospital, in... that's right... the basement (in a drafty corridor, breaking down boxes and carting them out to a dumpster out back). I've been there a while but I still don't know where everything is. But just today I saw a guy wheeling a gurney with a human-shaped lump under a sheet down the corridor and into the third door to my left. To confirm my suspicions, I asked a coworker what that room was. He said "Oh, that's the morgue". All I could think about was playing Silent Hill and how I was so relieved when the door to the morgue was jammed shut, because that meant I didn't have to go in there.
Then I blacked out and when I came to, I found myself in a dark, scary alternate dimension where the floor was all a rusted and bloody grate, and there were corpses wrapped in burlap hung up on the walls of the corridor.

Okay, so that last part is an elaboration, but the rest is true. I just couldn't wait to get home and share it.

That would be SH2, not 3, and you can find it on kazaa... That's where I found that nasty video with pyramid head, and the überweird "Usagi" (for SH3,) both of which are very avant garde pieces that, even more so than the silent hill games, resemble nightmares. The Usagi one is sorta funny, but it's also creepy... Not as scary as the games, but much more weird...

I was going to try to see the one from SH2 with the chainsaw (just to see what it was), but there is a bandwidth limit... did you do a "save as" to view or try to stream it?

I "save as..." rather than trying to view it directly. If you can't access the file then try again a few hours later ^^ James with the chainsaw is hilarious, hehe, I really need to try that one out for myself XD

I saved as... All the WMV's worked... (surprising, since they weren't working before) but none of the MPEG-1 files worked...

On the MPEG-1 files, all of the sound comes late... I mean, it's not just bad dubbing, but even sound effects are off... Angela smashed the tv on that doorman, and i heard the crash about a second and a half late... I turned all non-essential files off... Did they just convert them wrong?

Anyhow, i guess I don't need those, because I'm taping them all myself. Of course, I've got a bit more fluff, and missed a couple, but it's mostly fine... I wanted to show the short version of SH2 to a friend. Also, I allready taped all of SH3, but I taped too much of my walking and problem solving and such... I'm trimming down SH2.

Regardless of the problems I, and apparantly, only I am having with the video, it is missing two things... Those "art of Silent Hill" vids... I really wouldn't recommend the one for SH2, but the "Usagi" video is just too funny and weird and scary to pass up... I guess it is in a commercial DVD sold only in Europe and Japan... Once again, the Americans get... Shall we say, "Paradise" hehe

I downloaded a short MPEG-1 from SH2, it seemed to work fine, but it was only a short one, so... don't know.

Maybe switching what program you view them with might help... I've found that, for instance, some thing will play better with my PowerDVD than with WinAMP (my primary viewer)... specifically the Red Vs Blue videos I have on CD.

Anyone besides me think Valtiel looks like pyramid head with a human head (sorta blonde hair, like James) and, still no face... I noticed that he has the same clothes as Pyramid head (the long bloody coat with pants underneath)

Oh yeah, this is creepy... A voice used in SH3 (as the voice of Sammael) is actually a piece of a real Voodoo ritual... Probably why I always try to get past that part as soon as possible... (one of the Zelda games has part of a muslim prayer in it, supposedly) That makes me a little uncomfortable.

(as for anyone saying voodoo(sp?) doesn't exist, it's a recognised religion just like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Wicca...)

ARGHHH!! My post got lost again?!?! What's with this stupid connection!?!?

Anyway... I was saying that there's a lot of conceptions that Valtiel is PH. But it seems they aren't the same since Valtiel is more of a mid-wife than the Red God/Executioner that PH was in SH2. THey have similar designs but look more closely (especially the concept art) it seems Valtiel's "long coat" is actually attached to him O_o PH also has a more human structure than Valtiel's sorta long limbed body that hunches when he walks upright.

Are you talking about the chanting in the alternate church? Yeah, that part just makes your hair rise on end. SH's goal is to make you uncomfortable--it's just more disturbing for us because of the demonic/cultish aspects. I sure was pretty uncomfortable listening to wackos talking about "God" and "salvation" in what's like a twisted mockery of Scripture. Ugh, that really gets to me...

Oh, definately (about the "god" and "salvation" thing)...

I want to eventually work for KCE, but I would like to know what I'm going to have to look forward to. I consdier them to be the best in the area of Video Game design... Kojima's a KCE man, the SH games came out of KCE, and even Dance Dance Revolution. Konami was about all that was keeping the MSX alive while it was, and they've had a lot of innovation coming out of them... The first tactical espianage game (to which all those Splinter Cell fans owe their fandom to), the takeoff of the rythm games (though a few came before, DDR was definately the breakthrough game) and the true pioneers of the Interactive movie (MGS was the crown, the one to be emulated for all such projects to come)

However, I would like to know if they really have such bad feelings about Christians... I mean, many times in the SH games they talked about the "persecution by the Christians" and of course there's the fact that the cult seems like a really twisted interpretation of Christianity in the first place. If the dream that I feel God's given me is ever to come true, I have to hang around the people that I feel are best in this area, and that is definately the Konami team, but is that going to be possible? I guess that's long in the future, and God could take me in a whole other direction. I'll just have to wait...

I hope they don't feel that way personally, but the pattern I'd been seeing may suggest that...

Yeah, but I feel it isn't just Konami. It's probably the general sentiment in Japan where they don't really understand Christianity at all. There's the Amakusa arc in Kenshin, then this "holy" terrorists at the end of Yu Yu Hakusho, just many of these little jabs that seem to be aimed at Christianity--or more exactly western religion. Western religion do have an ugly history of persecution (witch burning comes to mind) and bloody crusades. All the more reason to spread and show the real truth behind these obviously against God's words stuff people did in the past ^^

Heather even quoted that reincarnation is better than a "paradise" so she's obviously in favor for eastern beliefs as, I'm sure, the Konami team is. It's fair game I's say; we'll try to insert Christian themes into our games/anime/manga/stories and they have the right to insert their beliefs in their stuff. The world is a battlefield ;P

Because of this, maybe you'll be better off at Blizzard or EA than KCE. But then, who knows if the Lord has something planned for you there ;) And I'm expecting that goal of yours to come into frutition mister! :D

In Japan, the opposition to Christianity among video game creators would be different than the opposition among video game creators in the US. In the US, it's much more personal, because Christians in the US have historically attacked video games... Too violent, subversive, waste of time, even calling the entire industry evil and worthless. Besides that, Japan hasn't been exposed to the HORRIBLE christian games of the past, so in the US, it is widely viewed that Christians could never make video games. Big game mags in the US even go so far as to rail on Christianity, and for the most part concerning the games, they've been right.

I personally think that, as you put it, I will have to be the sheep in wolves clothing. Not just me, but I will have to have others with me. We're going to have to go in the midst of these hostile environments without getting eaten. That requires a lot of wisdom, and a lot of prayer, and a lot more accountability than a standard ministry. It requires 200% effort, as it were (though that is merely a figure of speech, except that God fill in the remaining 100%)

About EA, I don't know if you guys know, but EA is now the American counterpart to Square-Enix. There may be something similar in konami. It's VERY possible that I could start off here in the US, in an American based company connected to KCE and move to Japan eventually. I know that 1. God Called me to Japan and 2. God called me into video games. Konami may not be my final result, but that's what it would look like right now. I think there will be a hostile environment waiting for me in Japan, but much moreso in the US. No matter where I go, I'll have a lot of people working to tear me and my team down. However, while I can't say this now as I have some serious personal spiritual issues I need to resolve before I even attempt something like this, I think it was Paul (but I'm not sure) who said "If God is for us, who can be against us?" If I am really submitting to God and obeying what I feel he's telling me to do, everything will fall into place, and there's a good chance it will all be at the last minute.
