Hmmm, a number of those are licensed games.

But, regardless, I'm interested in Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Wii, Mario Wii, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

I am mildly interested enough to see Donkey Kong Wii and the Camelot RPG.

What if Nintendo put a false name on purpose as a publicity stunt?

But has Nintendo ever pulled something like that before?

Yes, in fact, they've done something similar in the past (or, so I've read).

Look it up, I can't remember the specifics. :/

http://blog.wired.com/games/index.blog?entry_id=1467976

I'm sorry, he doesn't raise any good points. He raises uninformed points that make him look like he's making up stuff just so he can defend Nintendo. If a person has to invent things in order to raise a defense, it's a bad idea. Where did he make up things? Oh, where to begin.

The "Genesis/Mega Drive" days are over. One world, one name.

Oh really? When was the last time you went to Barnes & Noble and asked for a copy of Zettai Kareshi? I'll tell you when. NEVER. Because the title was changed to "Absolute Boyfriend" in English speaking countries. That "One world one name" statement may sound nice, but it's completely false and has no grounding in reality.

And "Revolution" was never going to fly in Japan, where the word is nearly unpronounceable.

Oh, really? Dang. So I guess Dance Dance REVOLUTION was a complete failure in Japan because of its unpronounceable name...oh wait, MY BAD. Words spoken by a man who has NO IDEA what he's talking about. The word "Revolution" has been in Japan for almost FORTY YEARS ever since the insanely popular Beatles song.

you can bet that Actual People, as opposed to the Internet, won't have a problem with it.

So the internet is just a bunch of robots? Could have fooled me. I thought the people that post on the internet ARE real people, that go out and work at jobs and drive cars and buy video games. But I guess random AI programs have posted all these statements that the name sucks. Silly me. Thank you for removing my ignorance.

If I said, "What are we doing tonight," would you repeat back to me, "What are wee doing tonight? Huh? Huh? Get it?"

No, because in that context, "we" is being used in a grammatically correct way, as a first person pronoun, not as a noun. When used as a noun, it's a slang term for urine.

This garbage about a universal name is a bunch of corporate brainwashing. You and I know full well half the American populace is going to call it the "Why." Because there is no word in the English language that has two i's in it, so people are going to look at it and think "Wi-fi" and pronounce it "Why." Was Nintendo's aim to produce a system name that will be mispronounced? If it was, they succeeded. If it wasn't, then the name "Wii" is a failure.

Also, at least Playstation and Xbox and Gamecube have something in common with their system. Look, it's a station you play games on. It's a cube you play games on. It's a box with a big X on it. It's readily identifiable with the product, and with video gaming in general. The name "Wii" has no connotation to the system, nor does it make you think about video games, or even REGULAR games for that matter. When a name cannot be logically connected to its product, it is a BAD NAME.

Will I still buy one? Yes. I think anyone who refuses to buy the system simply because of the name, is childish and petty. But even so, that still doesn't excuse the fact that it IS a bad name, a horrible name. A failure on the part of the Nintendo marketing department. If the Wii sells 50 million units, it will be IN SPITE of the name, not because of it. And that is NOT a good marketing strategy.

In closing, all I have to say is, would you defend the name if it was called the Nintendo Barf? If you say yes, please seek professional help. Or get a job working for Nintendo. I think you'd probably get along great with them.

Nate, I am sorry, but I can't help it. Don't kill me.
kaemmerite wrote:... would you defend the name if it was called the Nintendo Barf?
I would not defend it but....

Honestly, I think Barf would be a better name than Wii.

1.) Everybody can identify immediately what it means and has experienced it. Thus, consumer identification and intimacy has been quickly established. (That's good.)

2.) It is easily pronounceable. (That's good.)

3.) It can easily be part of the gaming experience when someone tries to play an FPS with the controller sensitivity too high and gets motion sickness. Therefore, it helps the consumer imagine what the gaming experience will be like. (That's good.)

4.) Little kids, especially boys, are really curious about how the body works and its interesting fluids. Considering Nintendo has little boys as the foundation for its market, it is very fitting and good business strategy. I mean, imagine the school cafeteria talk. (That's good.)

5.) It can create new gaming smack-talk lingo. Instead of, "You got fragged!" it will be, "You got Barfed!" This should help Nintendo's company direction in trying to create a new revolution in gaming. (That's good.)

In closing, I say you actually got a better name there, Nate. You should work for Nintendo! That would be considered brilliant over there, and you would get along just great! You can single-handedly save this debacle!

Three cheers for Nate!

I think it's a cool name. I liked the little ad. At first I thought it sounded dumb, but it kinda grew on me. And honestly, who cares about the name? People everywhere say that "Playstation" and "Xbox" are dumb names, but that didn't stop them from selling thousands upon thousands of consoles, now did it?

The best system name was "Genesis" hands down... And the worst is the Wii... Hands down... Playstation, Xbox, and gamecube are all the most mediocre... No, wait, I take that back... Nintendo 64 is the most mediocre... Nintendo's never had good names for their systems, and yet I consider the SNES a far superior system to the Genesis. So names don't mean much... What does mean much is the download service... That will make or break the Wii... If it's good, i'll be getting one, if it sucks, I won't... Plain and simple.

Gamers and people on the Internet did, and by definition, they don't count as real people and are collectively referred to as the Internets. You can bet that the "real people" that don't talk about or care about this stuff who are going to be buying it for whoever will continue to be indifferent to whether it was called Revolution or Wii. Either way, to real people they're both weird.

At least it's not incredibly bland and unimaginative as Xbox or Playstation 2.

Thank you, blkmage. That is, of course, the whole point of this system: to get "real people"/non-"Internets" to buy it. Whether it's wierd or not, if it's fun, they'll probably buy it.

Forget the name. Have fun.

Wow. I'm not a real person. That's interesting. Guess my money that I spend isn't real either. Yet I still have to pay taxes. How unfair.

At least it's not incredibly bland and unimaginative as Xbox or Playstation 2.

At least Playstation 2 is readily identifiable with video games, and isn't easy to mock. In that regard, it passes two tests that Wii fails. Better to have a bland unimaginative name than a ridiculously stupid, easily insultable name.

Which would you rather be named. John, a boring and unimaginitive name, or Gunther, a name which is bizarre and mocked mercilessly by playground children? I don't know about you, but I'd pick the former.

Isn't easy to mock or insult? Might I remind you of "Gaystation?"

Almost everything's easy to mock.

Really, I'd say Wii is much harder to make fun of and sound intellegent.

Think about it. What's it called? Wii.

Go out and try and make fun of it in public.

"ho ho ho! It's a Wii Wii!"

You'd get really bad stares.

"ahahahaha! I'm gonna Wee on it!"

Again, you'd get really bad stares.

"I'm not going to go and play with my Wee! O_o"

That only works in the UK, not to mention it's been overdone and the word "wee" is mostly used by 5 year olds... :/

OK, how about this, go to the closest mall in your area, find the most populated area, and scream out one of the above and see if you'll be taken seriously. :)

Okay, guys, I think that there's been enough arguing over the whole name issue, especially after your comments various names for various systems, Shia. I think we're stepping over the line and everyone is repeating themselves. Why don't we just move on and pause the name discussion in this thread until some other real news comes out about the Nintendo Wii and its games.

E3's just around the corner. Be patient and you'll have something else to discuss very soon.

'

Umm... we could go back to getting nowhere by arguing about the controller and who'll win the console war.... just kidding. ;) Seriously, I'm just about completely sick of that.

Anyways, there's a ton of stuff. Like...

Nintendo unofficially announces racing game?

http://www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/418

The interview about Madden:
http://www.n-philes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26360

Hideo Kojima to unwrap Wii project at E3?

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=24568676&sid=6148621

And perhaps the biggest one:

An Ace up Nintendo's sleeve? There is another secret to the Wii? 1up says so...

Miyamoto and Iwata have hinted at a final secret for Wii that has yet to be revealed. And while we don't have all the details, we've heard that what's in store is exciting indeed -- secrets of a rather revolutionary nature, with some rather cool implications for gaming. Needless to say, we're looking forward to E3.

Kojima is gonna do something on the Wii? Well, it isn't Metal Gear, and not all of his games live up to metal gear, for certain... Like ZOE... It's sorta ok, but no metal gear. Not by a longshot... I'm not saying it won't rock, just that I'm not really all that looking forward to it...
