indie genre?

Can someone explain what the term "indie" means exactly? No one really seems to know (well someone explained it to me once, but I forget :/)

My guess is that it probably is short for "independent", meaning that it's a genre that doesn't fit into any of the common genres out there. (As a possible example, my own music could be of an "indie genre" in the sense that I haven't been able to classify it. )

Hope that helps. :) (Hope I'm right... ^_^; )

Mostly obscure music that no ones heard of. A few examples are bands like Editors or Clapyourhandssayyeah (or anything played on KCRW =P)

Or just any music on a hipster's iPod.

Interesting thought... first thing that came to mind was "Indian" but of course, it sounds NOTHING like the music off the international channel^^ Of the music I've heard that's been concidered "Indie" are rocky/punkish stuff, with little or a lot of sceamo in it.... sometimes none at all :/ Now that I think about it, with a band like Frou Frou, it really doesn't fit into any other genres really (cept the genre it's under when I downloaded it was "ambient"... whatever that is!)

"Indie" is such a diverse genre, but I don't think it should really be considered a genre, either. It's just a word meaning that the band is not signed to a major record label.

Pavor is an indie death metal band. They are one of my favorites.

Yeah, indie isn't really a genre; it's merely a way to classify music (or movies). There are all kinds of music or movies of different genres that can be considered indie, independent, obscure, etc.

Think of how anime is not a genre but contains numerous genres within it.

Copeland is a good example for the indie "genre." Though there's no real genre of indieness that style is what usually pops into my mind at least.
