Getting around web filters?

Postby FadedOne » Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:28 pm

Ok, so I having issues with my college's web filter system. I think it sucks. :p I'm continually running into pages that say 'Blocked by websense' and then a list of things that student affairs prohibits. namely:

Adult content
Nudity
Sex
Sex Education
Lingerie and Swimsuit
Abused Drugs
Marijuana
Gambling
Illegal/Questionable
Racism/Hate
Alcohol and Tobacco
Tasteless
MP3
Language Translation Sites
Non-LUCAS sites on LUCAS machines

yea...that's the list. Can you say overkill? This is what I get for being at a Christian college. It's not that I dont applaud them for being careful and not wanting people to access porn, but i mean...come ON. 'swimsuit'? poor girls trying to order bras and bikinis online. they might as well give up. LoL.
And the truly sad thing here is that no matter how hard I try I can't get some harmless sites and yet porn/borderline porn content is still accessible through 'back doors'. so pointless.

So yea....I know for myself trying to load urbandictionary is impossible, and I like that site. or i did anyway... I've decided I need to rebel. I'm trying to find some way around the web filter. I heard about proxies, but sites with info about such things are ALL blocked. (trust me..i tried). I'm suspecting that this filter is a good one and has some kind of word-scan taht checks for taboo material before it loads? i dunno.

suggestions? ideas? i'm not trying to do anything illegal...i just want my american freedom back!

I can't say I would know, and if your school knows what it is doing you may not be able to get around the filter even if you try. There are a number of ISP side filtering solutions used now and these make it difficult to impossible to hack your way through. I can definately understand your problem with the filter as it can make legitimate use of the net impossible, but trying to get around it probably isn't your best option. Perhaps talk/send an e-mail to your network admin/local tech person to get the sites you want to use on an allowed list so you can access resonable content without trying to bypass the system.

It's been awhile since I've used one, but you should be able to find some at bnetweb. I wouldn't necessarily recommend browsing too much of the site though. It has some pretty bad stuff on it, but it also has bypass browsers. They're located on the side bar under 'School Bypass.' I can't verify if they're still there right this moment because they're changing servers right now, and it says to check back in a few hours. I hope this helps.
