To make online Manga

Hey, Ive seen a lot of online Manga. Im working on an idea right now, but I don't know if it's better to use a scanner, (which I don't have) or to make the drwings in an online artshop, (which I can't use). I'm just not sure what to fix if I want to post online manga. Can anyone help me with suggestions.

I believe most online comic artists do a combination of both. Generally penciling and often inking are done by hand and then coloring is done by computer. If you need a scanner, you may be able to find one at a public facility such as a library. As for knowledge of use of art programs, you have probably come to the right place (I'm just not the right person). There are likely plenty of other tutorials available online as well.

I do my penciling and inking by hand, then tones via photoshop.

Coloring in photoshop is pretty easy, you just need some simple knowledge of brushes, how to use the color pallete, and a little bit about layers. (usually I make a new layer for each color.)

Now, alot depends on what you want to do. I got a rather nice scanner for about 75$, but grafics programs can get rather pricey. If you want to use tones or colors, you have a couple options. You can order tones and apply them by hand (considering you want to use tones, you can get copic markers for color). These will at first be way cheaper than a digital art program, but in the long run you will save yourself a TON of money if you spend several hundred on a digital art program.

Ditto what UC and Uriah said to regards to what is typical for most online comic artists. I do know some artists do all their work digitally. However, the choice solely depends on what you're comfortable with.

It sounds like you may have more opportunities to obtain a scanner rather than drawing digitally since a scanner generally costs less than a graphic tablet.

I agree with what's been said - it's all up to what you're used to and what you like the best. It seems like every medium of making manga gives a different look and style to what you create, and if there's something that you like the look of then you should go for that. I can't color or outline on the computer all that well, so I stick to doing everything except for the tones by hand. But I kinda like it that way ^^ Art programs like Photoshop are really expensive but worth the money if you're going to be using it often because you can do a lot of great things with it. Have fun with whatever you create, Akakaze - I hope we can see some of your projects sometime soon!

I would take Uriah's and Mave's advice to heart.

I believe a scanner to be pivotal to do any type of computer art. It gives a sense of orginality when you know the person actually used thier hand to draw this instead of using a mouse.
