I'd rather buy manga at my local comic store...it's a loyalty thing. ^^; But hey, Wal-mart, cool, yeah. >_> I guess if you don't have a comic store...

I give a nod to Tokyopop for doing well to get Manga more positive attention, but I wish they'd fire a couple of their translators... Like the one who did Chobits...

Also, this is a two edged sword... People know we like anime, so they pick up, oh , Chobits or GTO (completely ignoring the rating, mind you) and see the first "f" word fly or Chii being turned on (with obvious innuendos there in the book) and it's loadacrap talks part 3.

Having the books there makes it much more likely for someone to pick it up who will freak out by what it has... Maybe Tokyopop will only go 13+ and lower, to curb some of the potential problems with the common walmart customers... If they're running the 16+ or 18+ there, we're all in for some backlash... Of course, it will come at US, the fans and particularly Christian fans... Oh, and walmart... And then there's Focus on the Family, who is sure to pick up on it...

Yeah Wal-mart doesn't even sell parent advisory CD's. How they gonna sell some of that manga.

Hmm I'm going Shiroi here, all the people where I buy comics know my by name. They chat with me about what series I'm reading now, etc. etc. I like that feeling, so I'm staying there.
Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away.

I wish I had somewhere to buy manga. I like that I'll be able to get it at Walmart, but I probably won't anyway, just because I'm holding out for a comic store...someday.

Look for me at Anime Weekend Atlanta!

I'm fairly sure the 13+ titles and lower are the ones that Walmart is going to carry and mainly the more popular titles. I suppose it's possible a 16+ title might make it in but like you said, titles with a higher rating will create problems with the average Walmart customer who knows next to nothing about anime and manga and might assume all of them are for kids.

I wonder how many different titles will be sold at Walmart.

Actually, I wouldn't be suprised if Viz followed Tokyopop's lead and released some of their mangas in stores like Walmart.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Shonen Jump in Wal*Mart, so it wouldn't suprise me.

Yeah... Walmart is really the "farm town" of Department stores (no offense to anyone who lives in a farm town.) It's just too likely that whoever you purchase the books from, you're going to get condescending looks and maybe even comments, or worse.

1. "How can you be reading COMIC BOOKS at YOUR AGE!?"
2. "Those books are disgusting! How could they sell something like THAT to CHILDREN!?"

You know, the normal sort of responses...

I checked out a book on the evolution of television at the library. I got an evil eye. Later I figured out why.....

The moral of my story: Evil eyes should be ignored, but some times they shouldn't.

Actually, I think people who insult their customers like that aren't going to be employed there very long. I get what you are saying however. Walmart employees aren't always that bright when it comes to hobbies like anime and video games.(Er...no offense to any Walmart employee who reads this. Heh, heh, heh. ).

It's probably better anyways to have a habit of buying anime and manga from someplace like Barnes and Nobles, Bestbuy, Suncoast, Gamestop and the like.

LOL, I don't go to the library anymore even to get the most innocent books, much less *anything* I could be accused over. I'm just so afraid that someone, somehow, will see every book I have ever checked out over the last 10 years, compile it all, and find some "profile" in it that doesn't exist.

After all, before I knew anyone from the government could pull your list of checked-out books for the last 10 years, I used to check out titles on religious cults, the philosophy of politics, the law, terrorism, and a few other issues I wanted more insight on than I could get on the news. No more.

LOL, I know no one will probably ever pull my book lists. I'm just too scared to put myself on record at the library anymore. . .I wish I could check out books anonymously with no fear of being reported or investigated. ^sigh^

Same here. I read a lot of different things, and I would much rather purchase the books so that I can keep them for easy future reference. The problem is that certain books are "flagged," meaning that if you check them out, then it has to be reported; so, it is possible that you could be suspected of things that are totally absurd. I also buy almost all of my books from Amazon.com (they also sell manga, btw), so there is no cashier giving me weird looks.

I'm glad that Wal-Mart is going to start selling manga. Not because I plan to buy any (I'm a strictly anime man  ), but due to the fact that it is one more step toward moving anime/manga into the mainstream; and, a lot more people will be exposed to manga if they see it in Wal-Mart, perhaps increasing the fan base.

1st.... shouldn't this be in the Manga forum? I went there looking for it and eventually found it here in Anime... anyway...

I thought I'd share this... I think it fits in with people's attitudes about this.

I made up a list of stuff for Christmas for my family (make it easy on them), and part of my list included some Manga (a couple series that I have and one or two that I didn't).

My Mom told me that she didn't feel too odd about getting me the Veggie Tales DVDs that she did, but she only got me one Graphic novel. She thought about getting me more, but it felt odd to her.

In part several of the Manga I listed where "T" rated (which isn't too big a deal considering that I'd not want most of the ones that are rated 18+ or anything)... the style is very different from US comics (which she may or may not have felt better about).... bottom line is that she just doesn't "get it."

That's fine... but I'm sure if Walmart starts selling these things in all the stores (or many of them) that some/many of the people just won't "get it" too. This generally isn't as much of an issue at someplace like Suncoast or even Borders.

It's all good though.... I'd much rather hold my head up and buy stuff that's rated (or demographiced) for someone half my age (or less) than be buying garbage rated 18+ and be embarrassed about it.

Now where did I put my "handy, dandy, notebook".... I think "Blues Clues" is about to start :D
