Good xbox 360 news! (backwards compatibility)

Postby Cognitive Gear » Sat Nov 12, 2005 8:10 pm

Yes, I know it's "only" 200 games long but... Let the rumors of a non-backwards compatible xbox 360 be gone!

And I would not take that as a final list they'll be more to add as time goes on. Probably a mess up in the article but it's missing oh three of the best selling action games, the Splinter Cell series. Like I said probably a mess up there, since they have crap like Kabuki Warriors and Catwoman on there, so take it tenatively.

I just hope they add Panzer Dragoon and Shenmue 2 to that list. If they do that then I can have an excuse to sell my Xbox. Oh and I hope they either make it possible to transfer saved data or someone puts a hack out there for it... Don't really feel like restarting Ninja Gaiden when I'm pretty far into it and pick it up again in the future.

And of course you must have the HDD to have backwards compatibility of course.

Yep, that's what I heard, too.

I can't believe there's no Star Wars Battlefront or Battlefront II on this list. That sure as heck better change. Otherwise...

I'll bet this will be the first target of the inevitable hacks, mods, and mod chips. Why not just come up with one overall emulator, instead of 200? Oh, because that would be logical. Forgot who we were dealing with here for a moment.

No the emulation software is on the harddrive. You have to have it to play any Xbox games.

How is it "lacking backwards compatibility" I mean did you actually read it? Besides anyone with half a brain realizes that the $400 system is the best option. And expect the PS3 to take the same price route at $400 with the harddriveless Revolution at $300.

I’m still myself waiting on Gladius, Splinter Cell(s), Panzer Dragoon, Far Cry: Instincts, Mercenaries, Brothers in Arms, Shenmue 2, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (got an X-box before PS2) to be added.

Hopefully, since this all is to do to with writing emulation software for each, updates could be available off of LIVE. If that is the case, I could care less about the intial list, because I'll probably wait for a price drop before I pick up a system.

Yeah that is actually how it's going to work. And like I said earlier I'd take this list tentatively since it's missing huge series like Splinter Cell and Battlefront. Not to mention all those games you listed.

Yes... Only 200 games is lacking. Yeah, they're doing more OVER TIME but it should have all been done at once... WHy not make ALL THE GAMES compatible right from the start? It wouldn't have been that hard. I mean, if it was sorta glitchy even, like PS2's PS1 emulation, at least they would have been on even ground with Sony... Nintendo is definately the king of the backward compatibility this time... Man... Too bad PS3 doesn't play PSP.

L-A-M-E... If Sony does the same thing (which I doubt they will), then they will have a backlash, and drive more sales to N. Not everyone has braodband.

My guess is they're tweaking the emulator on a case-by-case basis. Doesn't mean it's the best way to do it, but I suspect that's what's going on.

Because they had a fallout with Nvidia the maker of the Xbox graphics chipset and switched to ATI. The 360's ATI graphics chipset isn't natively compatible with Xbox games. They don't own the intellectual property in the Nvidia chips thus they struck a deal with Nvidia to license them for 360's backwards compatibility which cost them some bucks. They probably did the easiest and best selling first, with some exceptions. Obviously you got your Halo's, Ninja Gaiden's, etc. Of course it's missing Dead or Alive Ultimate, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Riddick, Jet Set Radio, Battlefront's, Burnouts, Splinter Cells, etc. but they will be on there you can be sure of that. Like I've said three times tentative list and there will always be more coming. I am kind of mad they did easier titles first and are probably holding out on the better ones not on the list and the fact that they made that stupid business decision with Nvidia that made emulation required anyway. But oh well I'll get my BC either way at no extra cost to me.

Besides it's a next-gen system if you have any obscure Xbox games outside of my list of exceptions then you probably have a workable Xbox sitting there until you can wait awhile for the emulation software to come out...

PS2 had the rights to their chipset nuff said.

Nintendo the king of backwards compatibility? Uh yeah I guess since they refuse to give up using friggin cartridges in their machines... I really don't see how they take the cup there besides with the DS and Gameboy/Advance games and really only if you're a big handheld junkie.

The Revolution will still only play Gamecube games so they're really on the same level there as Sony and Microsoft. Actually I'd say Sony would take the cake again since they'd have all three Playstations playable. Yes...just like it's too bad the Revolution won't play DS games.:P Broadband where did that one come from? I'm sure the Revolution will have ethernet for that since the Gamecube did as an add on. Uggh but the lack of a harddrive and HDTV support is a kicker, very backwards design there.

Yes before someone says "it cheeper 4 mainstreeeem, consumerzzz not many wills hav HDTV or need a hardrivezorz!!!11" Nobody ever got ahead by thinking backwards if it's one thing PS2 set the standard for it's backwards compatibility is a must. And with Microsoft it's that a harddrive should be mandatory and online play can work with consoles.

sony wont have 100% backwards compatability either....

anyways...this is my opinion....
you couldnt play your NES games on your SNES, or your SNES on your 64, or your genesis on your dreamcast, and really....how long did you play your PS1 on your PS2?....
and my opinion in all of this...buy a pc...:)

Yes I see that quote but we should deffinetly wait for more information on that one. Remember there were only about 10-15 PS1 games that were unplayable on the US PS2. Heck there could be 50 incompatible PS2 games with the PS3 but we should just wait and see and not worry about one offhand quote. And you are right there you're not usually going to be playing alot of past console games on your new one. Sure I've had my spurts of playing a Resident Evil, a Final Fantasy, or something, but it's not like your old console stops working the minute you get the new one. Well actually in my case my Playstation's disc spinning mechanism was breaking down so I was glad to get rid of it.:P

O_o ? ? ?

Revo plays Revo games, GC, and emulation for the past systems. And it doesn't appear to pick and choose which ones will work (well, they haven't before, so just supposing...).

President Satoru Iwata, in a keynote speech at the Game Developer's Conference, said the new machine, currently code-named Revolution, will be backwards compatible. That is, it will be able to play all existing GameCube games, as well as ones specifically designed for the new system.

It's pick and choose as to whether they want to provide classic game emulation for certain games, you're not running it off the original cartridge. With the 360 I already explained the emulation so don't need to say anything.

I would not consider the Revolution's emulation for pre-Gamecube games to be backwards compatibility in the sense that the PS3, Xbox360, DS are. You can't stick your old cartridges in the thing, you're going to have to download them. And don't count on old classics being free either. There's too much money for Nintendo to make selling them for 5 bucks a pop or so for.
