Is *now* the time to buy a Nintendo DS?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Is *now* the time to buy a Nintendo DS?

…or perhaps more importantly, I should ask, is there official justification to own the thing, now? I think so, and I’ll tell you why….

Recently, as you may know, the Video Game industry has not had the happiest of news stories. X-box 360 pricing, delay of Zelda, Hot Coffee, Jack Thompson’s attacking of the Sims 2 (questioning the legality of mods, in general), lackluster PSP games after it’s awesome release, and the financial losses reported by many (if not most) game companies. Blah. Blah. Instead of bringin more bad news to the table, I have some very good news, which of course concerns the Nintendo DS.

Late after noon yesterday (by East Coast time), Gamespot posted up reviews for Nintendogs and Advance Wars: Dual Strike, which are expected to see store shelves August 22nd. Nintedogs received a superb 9.1 and Advance Wars: DS got a tenth a point higher with a 9.2. Not to shabby, huh?

Linkage (Video reviews available for each):

I’m excited about each of these games for two different reasons. The first reason more for one and less than the other. –And the second reason less for one and more for the other.

1.They look really fantastic and like an over all fun time – More so for Advance Wars, because I am a major fan of this excellent series. This game looks to scream the definition of gameplay and replay value. After reading the review for Nintendogs it looks like a great time to be had, but I *do* already own a dog. If I do decide to buy Nintendogs, it’ll be at a lower price or I’ll wait for the rumored “Holiday Versionâ€

Nah, I understand the excitement and the Internet is a nice barrier from random hug impulses. ;)

As for the Revolution, I in-fact just spoke with a Nintendo Rep today who visited our store and she says that if all goes accordingly Nintendo should release info on the Revolution in September during its annual Summit. Time will tell.

And that's why Nintendo needs to spread the word. Gotta' be really cold if you can resist those cute puppy eyes in Nintendogs. :P

Is now the time to buy a DS? No. Now is the time to save your money for the XBox 360, PS3, and/or Revolution. Duh.

Let's see...
Nintendogs is one of the three games ever to get a perfect score in Famitsu magazine.
Advance Wars is just awesome.
The price dropped 20 bucks.
YES.

Nintendogs doesn't attract me much, but if I had enough money/got it for free somehow, I'd still enjoy it.

As for the Revolution, I in-fact just spoke with a Nintendo Rep today who visited our store and she says that if all goes accordingly Nintendo should release info on the Revolution in September during its annual Summit. Time will tell.

I'll not say too much on this as to avoid another console war. ;)

Save money for a X-box 360? Tell me why. I see not a whole lot reason to do so, now. As you may know, I'm fairly neutral on the current generations of system (because they are all great), however I am very cynical about the X-box 360.

So, yes, I have to disagree and I'll tell here is why I do and am cynical about the X-box 360...

X-box 360

-Any ounce of excitement for this system was zapped from me the moment after that awful MTV commercial of an unveiling.
-Then, E3 came and they showed off nothing special (minus a few trailers) and a frame rate issue plague version of Kameo.
-Micro$oft's selling this system as "hip" really turns me off.
-The $299 version comes with a "wired" controller, no hard-drive (no backward compatibility), and no memory card ($40, btw).
-The $399 comes with a Harddrive, High Definition cable (mostly likely you'll have to shell out $30 for analog standard Def cables), wireless controller.
-Bill Gates wants Halo 3 to parry the PS3's launch. If the PS3 is released in mid '06 and Bungie hasn't even begun work, that’s not a good thing. You really can't make a hit title in a year, anymore.
-I bet you Perfect Dark won't be a release game. Rare takes way too long to make a game. I could be wrong.
-They are cutting the life of a great system, the X-box, far to short. Consoles are suppose to have a life of 5-6 years.
-We still don't know the release games.

It's true I'll most likely get the X-box 360 around two years down the road (after the PS3 and Rev), but I see no reason to jump into M$'s false band wagon of hype this year. Not to mention, it's kinda' hard to take a console release seriously when the CEO of the division can't dress himself for a conference:

As for the PS3 and Revolution, I'm not saving any money until I get a concrete release date for those two. It's possible that the PS3 could in early '07, still. As for the Revolution, my guess is holiday of '06. Got plenty of time as I see it.

Sorry if I got off my topic, but that "Duh" insisted a counter. :P

*claps for Link Antilles*

And if any of this gets out of hand, I'm blaming you cbwingo. I stated in a way to avoid confrontations. What you said would only bring back more opposing statements.

I suggest we stick to the subject of the DS now.

When you say that games like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart are coming to the DS, do you mean entirely new games or the ones from GC?

Don't worry, I've always enjoyed getting into these discussions with Cbwing0 in the past and they remain civil.

Mario Kart DS will be like a bridge between the Gamecube version and N64 with added online for spice. As for Animal Crossing, not sure and I hope so.

Animal Crossing is going to be GREAT! That's why I'm getting a DS.
And about Harvest Moon, it is already out in Japan. It came out in March over there, and it's also basically a remake of the one for the GameBoy Advance. There are no new graphics from what I've seen.

Now what I REALLY want is Jump Superstars! I'm going to have to get it imported but I don't care!
It's basically Super Smash Bros. with characters from Shonen Jump Mag.!
Luffy VS. Prince of Tennis? That is sweet!
It will be cool though.

Later,
Aaron

Agreed.
What I really want is Luffy and Naruto going at it (and perhaps even Yoh Asakura?).
