Namco games

Postby Kireihana » Tue Jul 12, 2005 8:27 pm

Ok. I know this is sad, but I just beat Tales of Symphonia yesterday (I got it a long time ago, but the dog ate the memory card - no joke - and it was a while until I bought a new one and finally got around to playing it).

It was so. Absolutely. Awesome. I must have more Namco!! I was wondering if they are coming out with any new games for the GCN. Or any info on past games.

Kratos... *drool*

You know, when I hear Namco games I think of Dig-Dug and Pac-Man. I'm so old.

Lol I should have specified. I'm talking strictly RPGs here. I read about Baten Kaitos... I think it's the only other Namco RPG for the GameCube (shame.) Is it as good as ToS?

Baten Kaitos is the only other Namco RPG available on the 'cube.

It's a very solid and polished feeling RPG, which I would definitely recommend to RPG starving Gamecube fans. It's got beautiful graphics, smooth animation, a wonderfully done soundtrack, a nice battle engine, and over 40 hours worth of adventuring. So, what’s not to love? Ok, there are two things that I didn't like; the story feels cliche (although the character development is very nice) and the voice acting hurts. Fortunately, you can turn the voice acting off.

I put Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symmphonia on the same level.

As for other RPGs on the Gamecube...

If you are a Mario fan, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, is a game that's hard to hate. It has lots of sharp writing, fun and inventive gameplay, and a wonderful setting.

Skies of Arcadia Legends (if you don't mind a dated-RPG) is a engaging and unique game.

I can’t think of much else, except I recommend to keep an eye out for Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. It’s coming out in November. O’yeah and by the looks of your avatar, don’t forget Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. It’s a actual full-on Pokemon RPG for the Gamecube. Coming in October, I think.

Me too and I`m not old. Also Galaga.

And I think of Xenosaga.

My firend wanted to buy Tales of Symphonia but he`s a graphic freak. Are the graphics for it of this time?

The graphics were pretty amazing in the game’s various locales (for the most part). Now, the over world is another story. It looked terrible and for some very weird reason the frame-rate was very low then. Otherwise, the game was a work of art.

Here's a picture of the overworld...

Do note that technically Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos are made by mostly completely different people despite being published by Namco. Baten Kaitos was developed by Monolith Software. Tales of Symphonia was developed by Namco Tales Studio.
Tales of Symphonia seems to have gotton more positive opinions/reviews than Baten Kaitos.

I have only played Baten Kaitos briefly in the store however so I cannot really give an opinion on it.

In addition to ToS, I highly recommend Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Skies of Arcadia: Legends as GCN RPGs. I am also eagerly waiting for Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Tales of Legendia is going to be localized and brought out in the U.S. next year but that is only for PS2. The Tales series has tradionally been for Playstation consoles.

No.

The Tales series is like the Final Fantasy series in that the games are not connected aside from items/cameos/a similar battle system/etc.
The exception to this is Tales of Destiny and the Japan-only sequal Tales of Destiny II. The Tales of Destiny 2 that we got is actually Tales of Eternia.

^ They may be. That series has been all over the place.

Tekken and Xenosaga are my favorites. Though if 'Saga Ep.3 isn't just fantastic that may be it for it.

Hmm...kinda sorta.

While it is an actual stand alone game, unlike Colosseum, it's not quite a full Pokemon RPG like the Game Boy ones. It uses the "snag" system that Colosseum had, meaning that there will probably be no random battles and the Shadow Pokemon thing will be back.

Kind of a shame, but I'll still buy it.

I have beaten this game not all too long ago. I don't think it seemed dated at all! Sure the graphics werent ULTRA great, but the story was really amazing! I understand it was released on dreamcast before, but this game I believe compares to any modern RPG. I also really loved the characters in this game. None of the "woe is me" junk you find in most RPGs. The bosses in the game were tough, but far from overly frustrating. The pacing of the game moved along really well to! It never seemed like you were in one area for too long. This is one game I'd HIGHLY recommend to anyone, RPG fan or not :jump:

Alright, here's how it works...

The series includes so far:
Tales of Phantasia (SNES, GBA, PS1)
Tales of Destiny (PS1)
Tales of Eternia (PS1) (released as Tales of Destiny II in the US)
Tales of Destiny II (PS2) (the REAL Tales of Destiny II)
Tales of Symphonia (GC, PS2)
Tales of Rebirth (PS2)
Tales of Legendia (PS2) is currently in production.

...and a bunch of PS1/GBC/GBA sidestories/spinoffs...
I've bolded the ones we have gotton or are going to get in the U.S.

Hmm...kinda sorta.

Interesting. I might check it out when it's released. I never really cared for the console Pokemon games before but I enjoyed the Gameboy ones.
I'll see. It depends on the length of the game and if it gets good reviews.

No, I'm pretty sure that's a different game (the DC title is just "Skies of Arcadia").

Skies of Arcadia: Legends is essentially the same game as the DC version with some added features, sidequests, optional bosses, extra stuff, etc.
I believe they also toned down the random encounter rate.

Oh, okay. Now that would be a plus. I didn't like taking two steps in an innocent appearing area and getting challenged all the time.

I'm convinced that Namco is somehow telepathic and is stealing all my ideas. -_-

Tales of Symphonia (GC, PS2)

Is it actually on PS2? I heard it was suppose to be, but first heard it was GC exclusive, andI haven't actually seen it on PS2 anywhere. :/

On Baten Kaitos, the voices are annoying and I personally felt the battle system got a bit tedious towards the end, but teh graphics and music are awesome. (Must listen to "Ruler of the Nine Skies" again!!!)

Tales of Symphonia is currently my favorite game.
As for Namco they make Tekken and Soul Calibur right?
They makes some pretty freakin' awesome stuff.

Yeah, it's on PS2....................in Japan.
It's extremely unlikely that the PS2 version will get localized. I don't think Namco wants to ruin the GCN exclusivity of the game in the U.S.

Excluding Symphonia, only two Tales games have as of yet been released state-side.

Tales of Destiny is generally considered to be the worst game in the series.

Therefore, Tales of Destiny II/Tales of Eternia is the better game. It's not my favorite game but it was decent, despite cliche plot/characters and some localization messups.

I consider Tales of Phantasia, the first game in the series, better though. It's never been localized however so the only way most English-speakers have played it is via emulation.

OOOHHH i know legends was only for gamecube :P When I said I didn't believe it was dated, I was alerting you that I was aware of the fact it was basically straight from the dreamcast :P

What they added in legends was.... the wanted list.... I think more items.... like you said less random encounters, and just a bunch of side things. The story wasnt changed any, and I don't believe the graphics were either :P

and did you know soul calibur 1 was one of the only games... uhh was it gamepro? that rated it a PERFECT score. that game was SO excellent, I just played it today with my sister =P Its sooo fun!

IMO its a bit better than soul calibur 2. The quests were funner, and it seemed much more like fighting. How can I explain this? I can't =)

Well, considering Tales of Destiny 2 for the PS2 was one of the ones that we didnt get in the U.S....

It seems to have gotton good reviews from import reviewers but frankly speaking, it is unlikely that it will be brought to the U.S.
