I used to be an elitist, but now I'm definitely just a hobbyist.

Most of the 'elitist' stuff applies, the rest are 'hobby.'
First and foremost, I like making AMV's. If I like an AMV it usually serves as the first intro to the series (and sometimes the music source ....)

Second, my wife and I lived in Japan for our first years of marriage, and we use anime to brush up on our Japanese, so when we visit Japan, we can understand things more deeply, or travel further out and still be understood, or know WHY something is cool or historically significant - then seek it out: One of the world's foremost metallurgy museums is in Sendai. Another example: after seeing 'Hikaru no Go," if I go back to Japan, I will want to visit the "Nihon Ki-in" (the Go Institute) even though I ended up learning (and liking) Shogi better.

THAT's what anime is for me - a portal to discover Japanese culture, or revive good memories, and that's why I strongly dislike seeing 'fake' anime from outside of Japan being tucked into the anime sections of DVD store.

... so obviously I have -no- interest in dubs ...

Anime Hobbyist myself, though I do plan on going to many more cons if possible, and I also watch some kind of anime almost everyday (whether it be a new series or if I'm rewatching a series). Prolly watch anime around 4 days per week on average. I have no real preference for sub or dub; whichever happens to be better (in my opinion), I'll watch. Thus I'll watch one episode of each, and also determine how well the dub represents the subs should I be watching the dub. I only buy series that I like (in other words I've rented the first disc or have somehow viewed it, or I've gathered enough satisfactory info to buy it). Guess that's the kind of fan I am all in all!

I'm a hobbiest with some eleitist traits. I like Subbed. I think dubb is for the most part bad. I hate when the names of charachters are changed. Don't watch much anime on TV. I only buy what I like. DO watch fansubs. But only finish series I find intresting. Don't just watch anything. I don't really have much money so I don't have much anime. Manga on the other hand I have a huge collection. 114 GN's, some Rnglish some Japanese, some french. Then I have a ton of Shonen Jump and Ribon issues laying around.

I'm a casual anime fan. I mostly watch more mainstream anime like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex, Gundam series, Trigun, Evangelion, Noir, Read or Die, Macross Plus, so on. And I watch the stuff I grew up with like Robotech, Battle of the Planets, Voltron, and Speed Racer.

I fall into the group of: I watch Giant Robo and everything else is not good.
I will watch something interesting, but if it is not GR it is automatically less-good than everything.

I'm stuck somewhere between those 3. Anime is pretty much a 'cult' thing for me; there are certain series I love and am a rabid fanboy over, but I don't care all that much for Japan or anything that happens to be from there.

Well I don't watch whatever comes on TV. (But some of it, yeah.) I'm picky about what I watch, (mostly content), would rather rent than buy, could care less about sub or dub unless one or the other is really awful. (Cuz I can read fast! But I don't mind the English.) And I own next to nothing, although I am collecting a lot of manga lately. Never gone to conventions.

But I have been watching a lot of anime lately and I have somewhat strong opinions about it. (At least, what I like. Like, I want it to be clean, and I know what I like... when I see it. Sorta.)

That's the best I can come up with at 2:30ish.

I'm close to Elitest however I have gone beyond that.

I'm THE ANIME MAN.

Some additions are this
- Will also buy character goods based on series or artists.
- Is not afraid of how much the item costs when related to the above.
- Will import those things not available in the US
- Will watch anything at least once for better referencing later.

I'm somewhere between 'casual' and 'hobbyist'. I don't currently own any anime on DVD (I don't own many DVDs in general because of money issues, although I'm hoping to get a job soon), I mostly watch anime on Anime Network On Demand or what I can find through my library (which is a surprisingly decent collection), I don't mind edits as long as they're not drastic or somehow effect the story, I generally prefer dubbed to subbed (partially because I like to support animerican voice actors), I'm starting to get a small collection of manga...

I'm stuck between Casual and Hobbyist. I've only gotten into a few series, and I'm extremely picky about what I watch and buy. Currently, I own Azumanga Daioh, Angelic Layer, and Sonic X on DVD, and have also seen several episodes of Kaleido Star and most of Diamond Daydreams. I've never been to a convention.

Also, I watch subs to learn the language; the sub I want to see most is Sonic X (because even though I don't really mind the dubs, I'd love to see the originals most.)

I've always been lodged pretty thoroughly between the top two, though nowadays I'm more of a hobbyist in many respects.

I don't know if I posted in this before, but I'd have to say, by this time I'm very casual about it, since I actually haven't watched any anime in a couple months.

Rather lousy criteria if you ask me. I'd classify myself as in the top 10% of 'hardcore' anime enthusiats, and yet I have some traits from all 3 categories.

Closest descriptors for me:

-Has seen "everything" or as much he\she is willing to look into (meaning the goal is to watch as much as possible.)

I'm very selective about things that I WON'T watch, but everything else is fair game.

-Dedicated to buying as many DVD titles as one could afford.

Assuming I don't hate the show...

-Goes to any anime convention that he\she feels that they must go to get more merchandise.

I attend one specific con as often as possible, and I don't care about the merchandise.

-Watches anime almost everyday and has a set "agenda" on what series must be finished within the next day.

I set agendas and then fail to follow them, and I don't watch every day. I do, however, watch about 12-18 hours a week regardless.

-Has a preference of watching anime subtitled\dubbed (depending on the quality of either.)

Like any rational person ought to...

-Never pays attention to edits for broadcasts.

Edits don't bug me unless they're extreme

-Watches fansubs rarely.

More often than 'rarely', but not really 'frequently', either.

I also chuckle at the elitist fan watching as many fansubs as he can AND buying DVDs ... Such fans are incredibly rare. Most are either violently pro-DVD or pro-fansub in my experience.

But maybe that's just my experiences.

A person can devote every moment of free time to anime, if they wish, but I don't think that makes a person a fan of anime at all. Many such people are just desperate for an escape from real life, and anime just happened to be the vehicle. For such people, it COULD have been anything.

*is probably more of an elitist than he'd like to think*

I'm a huge fan who rarely watches any these days. Reason being is that there's rarely any on television that I want to watch. I think it's to the point where I'm going to do like my friends and just watch DVD's of it since Cartoon Network is letting me down.

And I wasn't referring so much to the resurrection as a love for the dead threads. Thus my saying the wiki article supports me. :p Show the dead thread a little lovin! I knew what I was saying and I stand by that. This message was endorsed by Etoh*the*Greato for a more Greato Nation.

I was thinking more along the lines of resurrecting a dead thread...and necrophilia being rather disturbing.

I'm a hobbyist, but go to Con's far more frequently. As in, whenever there's one nearby (3-4 hr drive). Reason being my friends are avid elitists, and I enjoy their company, and even the cosplay. It's a good time to just let loose...in taste.
