RPG Maker 2--any good?

Postby Heart of Sword » Mon Jun 20, 2005 5:09 pm

I might get it, but I want to know if it's worth the money first. If anyone could give me a somewhat-detailed review, that'd be great! ^_^
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

I was just about to make a thread on this.

I want to know how the heck this game works. Like can youmake your own battle system, storyline, character, ect. (Sorry, but i`m sounding like the thread starter).

Also, Heart Of Sword, have you played RPG Maker 1? If so, can you give a detailed review for that?

RPG maker 2 is... Well, it's incredibly hard to use... I still haven't quite figured it out, though I haven't consistantly worked on it... I have to say, i prefer the 2D RPG Maker 2000 to the 3d Design on this game...

As for battle: Yes and no... Yes because you can do complicated events to create another battle system than the one they use, but no because with no HD doing that will shorten your game to almost nothing, if it is a rather simple battle system you're implementing... So, really, no. The battle system is the old dragonquest first person view of the monsters. Within that, however, you can get pretty creative, but I'm not quite sure how it compares to 2000, which was very versatile.

Story: yes
Character: Yes... And no... You have limited things you can do to change their appearance, but you set their stats and such...

This program seems much harder than RPG Maker 2000... That may be because I spent about 2 weeks or more studying 2000, and I don't have that kind of free time for RPG maker 2... I'm not sure... I don't understand how the script/event thing works on here. It seems you have to script everything seperately from the individual events. It may work to save space on duplicated events, but it does seem to complicate things in the creation... Also, maps are rather hard to get used to, and I still don't know which one to use to, say, make towns... I try buildings, but that just makes buildings... Dungeons also doesn't seem right... Hmm...

This just doesn't seem nearly as good as 2000... *sigh*

pc versions are usually better in my opinion, since you can download custom sprites and skins you wish to use, and import them into rm2k ^^

I got it...IT ROCKS!!!! XD

It didn't come with a manual, but I figured everything out anyway. It's totally awesome...wish you could do more with the character appearances, but whatever.

I took one look at the screenshots and dissed it off. Bleh. When I begin studying programming, it's gonna be with this program: http://www.darkbasic.com And trust me, Darkbasic could make a heck of a lot better game.

Just look at the graphics. They look like something a horse vomited out. You could do way better than that. In addition:

Get ready to spend a bundle on memory cards. It's gonna take an entire card just to make your epic. You are also limited on the resources you can use. AND if you don't have a PS2 keyboard, you are really screwed, because it will take a lot of clunking around with the controller.

Wanna program? Learn BASIC and C++. You can make something a whole lot better.

It is also worth mentioning that Dark Basic's website has specialized game makers which require no programming. No RPG makers though.

It's not about how "good" of a game it cam make, it's about how "fast" you can make your stories into games... And RPG maker is a LOT faster than basic or C++...

Provided you're talking about RPG maker 2, I'd agree. The characters look like animal crossing characters, which in turn look like something a horse vomited out. 2000 on the otherhand looks up to par with, if not better than, Final Fantasy 6. It's just the battle engine that isn't up to snuff. You can make it up to snuff, and a good programmer works within his or her limits.

In addition:

Very true. Memory Card: 20 bucks. USB keyboard: 15-20 bucks. Total cost of RPG maker when all is said and done: about 80 bucks.

Wanna program? Learn BASIC and C++. You can make something a whole lot better.
Learning curve to be able to produce games that compare to RPG maker on C++ or Basic? Very steep. Learning curve to do them on RPG maker? Moderate. Time to make projects on RPG maker? About a week for a 2 hour game. Time to make projects in C++? I don't know for sure, but let's say a project similar to our 2 hour RPG maker project? Probably a couple months. Anything better than that? A long time...

Yeah... I used to be a major RM2K freak (still haven't deleted RM2K3 yet...)

Oh, and Tom? Definitely Golden Sun. Get both of them. (Sequel as well, I mean)

You need that stupid keyboard? I could use the controller if I wanted to, right?

PS1 memory cards cost 1$ maybe I should buy the first.

Hmm... I haven't been able to get ahold of RPG Maker 2 to give it a go, but I've tried the RPG Makers from 95 to 2k3 on the computer. They're pretty versatile in terms of being able to customise your own graphics, as compared to peoples' opinions of RPG Maker 2. Also because they've been around longer there are much more graphics, sounds, and tutorials to help you with your game creation.

I dissed it not because the graphics were so bad, I did so because I knew I could do better with other programs on the market. I worded my last post wrong. I was not being childish. I was simply comparing it with my other options. It's true graphics are not as important, but I still don't want my projects sporting very less than mediocre graphics when I know I could make a higher quality game with something else.

Bobtheduck wrote:It's not about how "good" of a game it can make, it's about how "fast" you can make your stories into games... And RPG maker is a LOT faster than basic or C++...

True. But you see, I'm using DB as practice for my BASIC and C++ studies. RM2k can't help me with that.

Again, I'm using the program as practice before I go to college to get into game design. Any full blown RPG projects will be made by my future company after I break out on my own.

And Bob, storyline isn't everything. If you don't have a good presentation, your story will come out a stinker.

Storyline:
This is half and half since some games don't need stories to be good. It completely varies by what kind of game you are going to make. A 2D action game, for example, does not need a story to be a masterpiece. Look at Mario and Sonic. If it is an RPG or a 3D game, then the story is very important, and great care should be taken with it.

Graphics:
While it's true that graphics don't make the game, they help. A lot. If you are to be a master game designer, you should always put hard work into making the best graphical presentation possible. It will greatly enhance the story you are trying to tell and the gameplay in general.
