Avatar Questions and A Sort of Poll

Avatar Questions and A Sort of Poll

Postby Alice » Sat Jun 11, 2005 2:46 pm

1) Will I be unmemorable and confusing if I keep changing my avatar every day?

2) Will I be interpretted as the person on my avatar?

3) If both these are yes, and I should keep one avatar forever, how will I pick one I can stick with for that long? Any suggestions for me?

So far I've used avatars of Kai, Belle, Hatori, Shigure, Harlock, Cyborg 009, etc.

Speaking from personal experience, many people are known for their avatar, and it becomes a way of easily identifying them. I'm not saying that you should never change your avatar, I've changed mine on countless occasions.

But, for example, one of my previous avatars was Hotaru-chan from Sailor Moon. Since it was a female character, many people assumed I was a female, blatantly disregarding my gender symbol.

I've seen other people express confusion when a member would have an avatar similar to another member's avatar, too.

Ultimately it's up to you, but an avatar is kind of like a mini-representation of you, and a lot of people will recognize you more by your avatar than anything else.

Change as often as you like. if people can remember sunako, they can remember you ^^

don't worry about your gender being messed up alice... your name is alice and you hang out in the bishie thread as a fangirl. Not much to question there XD

I've had mine since before I joined CAA, and when I have a choice, I use this one on the forums I use.

Nobody seems to have confused me for a girl yet-- or at least not as far as I can tell. Of course Motoko is rather masculine...

I tend to go by Avvy recognition first and name second. Naturally, my RPG friends change theirs just when I'm used to the one they had before...

And what a lovely avatar it is, Volt. Happy hunting. ^^

I get a little mixed up when members who have kept the same avatar for a while suddenly change it, but only for a few seconds. Call it a small adjustment period. ^^

I wouldn't worry about changing your avatar a lot - lots of members do. I've never changed mine but I think I've had this one for so long that I'd weird myself out by swapping it now. ^^;

Moved to the graphics board. As for your question, don't worry about it. I change my avatar from time to time...it might throw off newbs...but people who know ya, it won't change anything.

Thanks! ^.^

Thanks, everyone. I was trying to decide who to settle on. Maybe now I can beat around the bush for awhile longer. *coughforevercough* We'll see.

But thanks, people, for taking my question seriously. I really wanted to know and I think you've all helped.

I changed mine exactly once, way at the beginning (people probably don't remember the one I initially used -- bonus points if you do).

I echo kaemmerite; people do associate people with avatars, even if they don't think they physically resemble them (although I do have some resemblance to Tofu-sensei, especially right now with my glasses on).

I usually keep an avatar for a long time and then suddenly change it for something new. I've used two avatars on this site.

People didn't forget me because I changed my avatar, they forgot me because I hadn't posted anything of worth. ;) (j/k)

Anyway, the people on my other main forum recognize me by name, so they didn't have any problem identifying me. (I'm Olde Guarde there, though, so that's to be expected)

Basically, just don't change your name at the same time.

So who are you again? Just kidding. I know who ya are.

I'll prolly settle on a single avatar eventually. But not until I can get the right one. That probably won't happen until I can make my own. (I.e. learn how to resize pictures I like.)

I think I've changed my avatar somewhere between three and six times. About resizing images -I know there's a thread on that; it's old but still relevant. Here's the address: http://66.92.1.159/showthread.php?t=19446&page=1 . Does that help?
