Mario, You Have Offically gone too Far!

I`m sorry, but I know 9/10 people will disagree but my opinion must be heard.

Although, Skateboarding is my favorite kind of gaming, Role Playing is my favorite Genre. I had NEVER played an RPG that I didn`t enjoy, they all rocked my socks and kept me playing till the end. Heck, I didn`t even mind FFX-2, once you get past the Charlie`s Angels scenario. What does Mario have to do with this you ask? You`ll see.

So I`m playing N64 over my friend`s house about 4 years ago and he`s playing "Paper Mario". I found it ok, but every other Mario game I thought was better.

The same friend 4 years later handed me Mario: SuperStar Saga and I have one phrase to describe thatr game IMO:

THE MOST SUCKIEST RPG....No, THE MOST SUCKIEST GAME TO DATE!

It is seriously THE one RPG i`m willing to throw in a dumpster and not care. It`s not just because it`s Mario, It`s because story and Gameplay or the most important RPG elements. What am I doing? I`m saving The princesses` voice. How crappy is the gameplay? VERY!

So I popped in Thousand Year Door in my friend`s Gamecube which was a decent game, but no that best for an RPG. Not just because Mario`s in it, because the whole "Kiddish paper" concept never turned me on. i did hget used to it but they might as well make the villian a flippin` Paper Shredder.

The Best Mario Game in existance is definately Mario: Six Golden Coins for The GB, which was the first appearence of Wario as the villian. It`s games like that that storyline never mattered. That game still rocks as i play it on my GB (Yes, I still have the original Game Boy. It`s sacred).

So people, why do you love Mario RPGs so much?

PS: I Heard a game for the SNES called : "Super Mario RPG" was the only good Mario RPG from my other RPG-lovin` friend. What we need for Sonic and Mario is a 3d sidescroller!!!!!

Oh boy. When you said you were starting a Mario RPG thread, I thought you were being positive about it.

Okay, number one. Look at all the Mario RPG games and you should see a running theme, called "humour". None of the games were ever meant to be serious in the first place, and honestly, these are some of the most unique RPGs I've seen in awhile.

Two. What's wrong with the gameplay? I love FF and all, but the "Super Star Saga" style is the funnest style I have ever played. The Mario games always were meant to be about pushing your skills to the limit in new ways, and the timing techniques done in the Mario RPGs follows that example. I have seen way, way too many RPGs focus on a cliched story-line so much that it completely ignores the gameplay. Nintendo has always focused more on the gameplay, which I truly prefer over graphics or storyline.

Now, there's my view on this, and I truly hope you'll again at what you're saying and realize that these games may be alot better than you believe.

Mmm...Mario RPG...Now THAT'S a classic! *needs to find that ROM again, too...* I loved Paper Mario, though (the only thing I didn't like was that you could only have one party member with you at a time, but I suppose that did make sense later on...)! It had fun gameplay, a creative idea, and was just a fun game. I spent many an hour thouroughly enjoying that game. It wasn't kiddy at all, it was just...well, fun. Games don't need to have adult themes to be considered a good game.

I did play Superstar Saga, and while it wasn't Mario at his best, it was still so-so. I think my favorite part in that game was the guy who said things like, "THE MUSTARD IS YOUR DOOOM!!!" or whatever...XD Anyways, you must also keep this in mind: Perhaps not all Mario games are meant for hardcore RPG fans or a more mature audience. I suppose Mario games are some of the very few games that are still suitable for children. So before you get all offended at Mario for being in an RPG, remember that not all games are meant to please everyone. I never played Thousand Year Door, since I was buying FF games at the time, but I'm sure it's not as bad as you say. Mario's not a horrible game, it's just targeted towards a different audience.

And you can't hate Nintendo for trying to bring innovation into their Mario games; if every Mario game was "just another side scroller," game developers and gamers alike would get sick of it. I think it's good that they've made tennis games, party games, golfing games, and RPG's with the Mario series. Call me an optimist, but I think it shows that Mario's developer's creative juices are still intact after almost 20 years. ^_^

As for the best Mario game, I wasn't too impressed with 6 Golden Coins. I still own it because it's practically an antique, but I hate how when you get a game over, you have to get all of the Golden coins all over again...>_< (was in Wario's Castle when this happened...) Personally, I'm going with Mario RPG, Super Mario Bros. 3, or Mario 64. Those games were truly great...*goes off in search of emulators and the ROMS she misses so much..*

Yeah, a serious Mario game that would be the day. Mario RPGs fail to be humerous. The humour sucks and my friend`s 6-year-old brother agrees."The Mustard is your doom!" Come on, that`s the lmaest thing i`ve ever heard. The gameplay was really annoying. Mario was just a classic sidescrolling game.

I don`t know how they kept him alive but I haven`t enjoyed a Mario game since Mario 64 or Party. Gee, I can`t wait until Mario Party 12 comes out, oh wat, might as well keep my N64 because they`re ALL THE SAME!

Hm. I believe I disagree. Mario RPG was an enjoyable game, and while it wasn't a hardcore rpg, it had secret bosses, ultimate equipment, a decent combat system and (above all) good gameplay.

As for Paper Mario (I have not played the sequel), I realize it isn't made to be completely serious, nor did I find it particularly funny. But the gameplay was simply so enjoyable that it actually ranks fairly high on my theoretical and insubstantial list of games.

As for SuperStar Saga... what did you particularly dislike about it? I thought it was an interesting take on the rpg genre. Being able to get out of difficult battles by sheer skill was somewhat enjoyable, as was being able to compensate for failures by leveling. While I wouldn't call it a classic, I also don't feel it was a terrible game.

To actually answer your question: while I don't love them "so much" I like the Mario rpgs mainly because they are fun. That's basically the whole of it.

This thread is only a negative sence to Superstar Saga and the face they make too much Mario parties. I haven`t bashed Paper in any why besides the face that everything is kiddish and paper which I got over.

Mario RPG was one of my favorite SNES games, along with CT, Seiken Densetsu 3, Earthbound, and Zelda. The music, characters, gameplay, mini-games, sidequests...Even the sound effects bring nostalgia. I loved every minute of that game! It was more like a classic RPG than Paper Mario was, since you had larger amounts of HP and more than one party member in battle. Geno was the coolest character by far, but having Peach and Bowser fight alongside you in battle was also incredibly cool! Man...I loved that game!! And the fact that it was made by Square and Nintendo could be the reason why it was one of the greatest Mario games, in my opinion.

But apparently, you have no appreciation for random humor, because "the mustard is your doom" is one of the most random things I've heard in a Mario game...A video game in general, for that matter...Man, that's just great!! XD I appreciate the Mario games' light-heartedness, even if it isn't side-splitting humor. And hey, don't go insulting the Mario tennis games, I thought those were great. Granted, they had to be played with more than one person to be truly enjoyed (the 64 version, at least), but they were still very entertaining. I guess we can't change your mind, but we can say that Mario is immortal, and 30-something side-scrolling adventures would be a complete snore fest next to the 30-something innovative Mario games.

Oh, and while you didn't say "ZOMG MARIO SUXXORS!!one!1!" you did say that Superstar Saga was the "most suckiest" Mario game, which is still bad grammar. Say "suckiest" or "most horrible" next time...

I'd say of the Mario RPGs, Super Mario RPG for SNES was my favorite. Having Culex as an optional boss ROCKED. It was nice to hear the ol' FFIV theme in it.

Superstar Saga was a close second. The combat engine was enjoyable, and the timing thing made sure that fights never got boring. That, and I liked the fact that Luigi was just "Mr. Green Guy" or "Green Dude" or "that person in green."

I never have cared much for the Mario Party games, and judging from the scores I've seen other game sites give the recent ones, most other people don't either.

I've never played any of the Mario sports games...oh, except Mario Golf, which was really fun...but also REALLY hard. I still can't get first place in Bowser's Course.

Before Nintendo thought that it was a great idea to base a game console on $80 cartridges when everyone else was going with $40-$50 CDs.

Nostalgia is great, but it can easily stifle creativity. Remember: quirkiness does not equal innovation (let alone a Revolution).

In my opinion, the perfect example of Nintendo's failure to break away from it's old mascots and bring real innovation is the decision to allow players to download old NES, SNES, and N64 games on their next console. Rather than devoting energy to new titles, they are once again forced to rely on hyper-nostalgia (not just fondly remembering, but idolizing the "glorious past"). Of course most gamers already can play all of their old favorites (I'll leave the "how" to you ), unless they have the willpower to resist playing their favorite games for all of these years. Perhaps that isn't entirely accurate: they could have kept in touch with their favorites through Nintendo's endless rehash machine...

I had considered defending Nintendo, as I do believe that some of their Nintendo 64 games were original and interesting (even if they used old mascots), until I remembered that the 64 is two consules behind the current cutting edge. So instead, I'll say that personally I see nothing wrong with old characters and franchises... providing the games are more than rehashes of previous content.

Actually, I liked the "low-HP" aspect of Paper Mario. It made a characters "Defense" rating actually an important aspect of gameplay, rather than a stat that is nice to have, but mostly unimportant.

Yes, Nintendo seems to be "behind" in alot of things, but I think the actual reality is that other companies are moving too fast and not focusing enough on quality.

I think I'll just stop right there and pray for this to stop before it becomes a console war.
