Grandia: A Grand RPG series

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Postby Tommy » Wed Mar 30, 2005 2:11 pm

Thanks, but I thought Xtreme was number 3......o well. I`m looking forward to this but I doubt it`ll be out soon.

What the heck is the difference between grandia II for dreamcast and Grandia II for Ps2 besides what system its on? I read boards all the time and they make it sound like Grandia II for Ps2 is the worst game ever and Grandia II for DC is the best. Why?

Same for Grandia I with PS1/ Saturn.

Status 4 Grandias:

Grandia I: Mogay Shrine.
Grandia II: completed.
Grandia for Game Boy Color: Was it released in the U.S.? It`s a game about a boy who gets sucked in the Grandia world.
Grandia Xtreme: Coming close to buying it.
Grandia III: patiently awauiting its arrival.
Grandia Online: Same as above even though I highly doubt i get it.

So MasterDias, do the characters for G3 have graphics similair to the past Grandias or Final fantasy X or what?

I believe the scans posted speak for themselves. Grandia III's graphics look far superior to those of its predecessors.

I believe most of the complaints people have about the PS2 version stems from slowdown and other porting problems that weren't in the DC version thus making the latter technically superior.

Grandia for Game Boy Color: Was it released in the U.S.? It`s a game about a boy who gets sucked in the Grandia world.

Grandia: Parallel Trippers...
And no, this wasn't, nor will ever be, released in the U.S.

I echo Kokoro Daisuke.
The scans speak for themselves.

Does anyone know of a website that delivers good info on coming releases from Japan that is in English?

So was Xtreme like a side game to the series?

More questions.

*SPOLIER*In the first Grandia I`m on the airship and Gen. Baal kindnapped Feena and I`m trying to save her nevertheless how corny the Flying Mantis scene was.

Also, does Justin`s father appear in the story anywhere? Just say 'Yes' or 'No' and don`t say 'Yes, but then he saves Justin an dies.'

Do you reappear in Parm after you defeat Evil Gaia like you appeared in Cyrum Kingdom after defeating Zera in Grandia II? i miss that place and I want to see Justin rubbing it in Gantz face that he saved the world. *SPOLER OVER!*

How old is Sue by the way? At first I thought she was Justin`s sister. It also seemed to be like Justin was 11 or 12 but 15?! Kind of the opposite of Cliff Fitter in Star Ocean. He seemed more like 26 than 36.

No.

You will see Parm again.

Sue=10
Gadwin=30
Rapp=17
Milda=19
Guido=unknown

Cliff seemed like he was in his twenties to me too.

Reading this discussion and the fact that Grandia III is in production inspired me to go out and buy Grandia II...

Hmm, do you know if Grandia III will have a PC version, or do I have to go buy a PS2?

As it is Square-Enix who is releasing it and not Ubi-Soft, it is probably around 99% unlikely that they will release it for PC...

Darn. Much as I hated how they dealt with Religion in #2, I did love the story and want to give 3 a try. Well, I'll see how much further the prices will drop...

The general consensus is that Grandia Extreme is more of a side game in the Grandia series.

Heh, I knew they stopped making GX. No one told me that....sheesh.

In Grandia 1, which I haven`t played, I got stuck again. The second I picked up where I left off I ran into a boss battle which looked like i could beat in my first try.

NANA, SAKI, And MIO.

Anyone have any stradegies to beating them or health recomendations. Plus, I need to find a Stash area fast.

You'll only be able to find a stash icon after you beat this area of the game. If you're already at the place where you fight the three generals, then you probably won't be finding any more items.

As for the fight itself, always concentrate your attacks on Saki. Through the entire fight she tries to use the combo move she does with Nana and Mio. By concentrating your attacks on her, she'll rarely have the chance to do the combo move(she will still be able to do it at least once, though, so be prepared). Also, use attacks that hit everybody(especially Justin's Dragon Cut). If Mio starts to get low on life (to the point that she's in the red), switch your focus from Saki to her. Take one of the generals out and you won't ever have to worry about the combo attack again.

I'm curious, what moves do your characters have, and what items are they equiped with?

Mostly Resurections. And The best move I have for Justin is Midair cut. I don`t have explosion for him because he doesn`t have Fire and I have no Mana Eggs. Err..... I always concentrate on Mio.

Oh and I can`t wait till Guido leaves my party. Since he is a Merchant, I assumed his backpack was a stash area.

Well...this is interesting.

Grandia III Forms Maternal Bonds

New Grandia III information has been excavated from the pages of Famitsu. Much of it is screenshots from the opening movie, but the real gem is the announcement of a new character.

Her name is Miranda, and she is the mother of the hero, Yuki. However, this is not a typical mother-and-son relationship. Miranda raised Yuki on her own, and they call each other by name. Miranda is not content to stay at home, bake cookies, and pressure her son about taking clean underwear with him on his quest. Instead, she stows away on Yuki's plane to follow him on his adventures with Alfeena. Miranda is straightforward and opinionated, and she is an expert with knives and herbs.

Grandia III is currently 75% complete and due for a summer release in Japan. A North American release has not been announced.

Well, you might be in a heap a trouble here, Tom. Looks like the only option available to you is to level up your magic and skills some. And, yeah, Guido is considered to be the worst character in the game. But don't worry, your final party will be awsome.

Still no announced release date? I guess there's no cause to worry....I mean, I can't imagine such a big game not coming out here.

The easiest way to see how to do spoiler tags is as follows:

Okay, you see my post, right? Do you see the little button marked "Reply" in the corner? Click that button, and it will show you exactly what I typed here, in a quote box. Since this post has a spoiler, it will show you exactly how to do the spoiler tags as a result.
This is where you type the spoiler. Be sure to spell the word spoiler correctly or it won't work.
Yay! I won Grandia Xtreme on Ebay last week. My dad sent the check and everything but it seems like its taking awhile. I live in Mass. and the dude lives in new York and all I know is that his first name is Jason. He started the bid from 1$ and my winning bid was 29$

How long does it usually take for it to come.....
I finally beat Nana, Saki, and Mio and am now about to fight General Baal on Grandia 1.

EDIT: I just got Grandia Xtreme in the mail and my opninion on it is:

1.The storlyline is that of an adventure game such as Spyro the Dragon or maybe deeper.
2. The voice acting is great and its cool that the guy that played Luke Skywalker plays the voice of Kroitz, but I don`t like kroitz voice that much.
3. Battle system is beyond the likes of its prodecessurs. Way better than G1 and G2.
4. The Dungeons are wicked fun more than aggrivating.
5. The music for battles reminds me of Mexio,but the rest is good.

That`s my take on it so far.

It took me awhile to beat it because i just stopped playing when i bought Chrono Trigger. When I made it to the last boss in CT i just switched back to Grandia.

Ok, I`d have to say the overall game is not better or worse than Grandia 2. they are tied. The graphics for G1 were cooler than G2, but I`m still confused how you say it`s the best love story in an RPG. I fond the romance to be lower than most FFs. I have to say I liked Ryudo more then Justin, except Ryudo really irritated me until he came intact with his soft side.

Probably Grandia 2 was a cooler experience for me because it was my first Grandia game, I don`t know. I also have to say the final party didn`t surprize me at all.

I like the battle system for grandia 2 better and the whole Stack system may have made the game harder but it wasn`t as good as when I fought the last boss and had 78 Yomi Elixirs and only had 10 on G1 even though the weren`t called that.

The Boss Awards.

The Easiest Boss: The First One.
The Hardest boss: Baal - Last Form
The Boss I was Stuck on the longest- Nana, Saki, and Mio (I was underleveled).
The ending was too short and I would`ve really liked to see a glimpse of Justin and Feena at the very end after the credits.
Ok, so my favorite character is a tie between Justin and Raap.

My comments on grandia xtreme so far.

I like the storyline although it`s as broad as an Action game, the battle system and challenging and addicting dungeons blew me away. The Mana Egg system rules, the characters in this game are the best. Basically, i think this game is stronger than G1 and 2 in every category besides story, but they heavily make up for it. The gameplay is so great as well as characters, it makes up for the storyline. If this game had a beautiful storyline it would be my favorite Grandia game hands down.

So, is a release date for Grandia 3 available? Don`t tell me I have to wait till the school year starts up again.

This is the first time I've heard of someone liking Grandia Xtreme so much. I haven't played the game myself since story is about 60% of what makes me like RPGs. Your glowing review of it does make me kinda want to try it out though.

I'm guessing you're going to have to wait quite a bit longer than that. I really don't see the game coming out here till Winter. We've only recently found out about it. We've known about FFXII for over a year and it's not coming out till 2006. I hate waiting, but if it means we get a better game, I'll stomach it.

But my youth will be wasted away waiting for RPGs.....
Ok, I`m not that obsessed.
I think grandia xtreme is VERY underrated because people expected the storyline to be beautiful when it was as broad as an action game as i said before. it`s the only RPG i`ve played with tons of things to do when you beat it. As a matter of fact, i heard the fun doesn`t even begin until you beat it.

I've only known one other person who liked Grandia EX, and they hadn't played the first two games. >.>; Regardless, I'm glad you enjoy it so much, though I can't exactly see much to like about it. I suppose, being a big Grandia II fan, I was expecting the epic storyline and character development of II to carry over to EX, which I know probably contributed to my disappointment with EX. I sort of expect RPGs to have the strongest storyline and characters (Evan struck me as a dumbed down Ryuudo) in comparison to other video games, but EX was so lacking in both departments that it hurt. Not that the game really seemed designed for a stunning...anything to begin with. But I decided to get my hopes up anyways.

Though I do have to admit - the Mana egg system was pretty nice. But I did like Grandia II's overall battle system a little better. The "improvements" made upon it in EX seemed a bit...I dunno. >.> I didn't really seem to work for me.
