I just spied a post from Shooraijin. I think he's back. :2)

Welcome back from Ireland, Shooraijin!

Go back to my "Off to Italy" thread :) I'm still downloading the camera (rotten Nikon cameras need a special downloader -- can't just plug it in and copy files).

Ireland?? I just noticed what Danek wrote. I went to Italy, silly!

Ironically, I did pick up several Irish Euro coins in Italy, as it so happens ...

This Nikon camera is a pain to download, however. Unlike my Olympus, which just mounts as a disk drive, the Nikon needs a special downloader (this is true of Mac and Windows, it's not just a Mac issue) and it's temperamental (burped on picture 110/111 on the 128MB card, requiring me to download it ALL OVER AGAIN!!!! at 1MB+ per shot ... that took a while). On the other hand, my dear little Olympus Brio is only a 1.3 megapixel and my buff and hardy Nikon Coolpix 990 is 3.3 (and has a wide-angle lens option and better options for controlling exposure/shutter/focus). Both of them are optical zoom, however, which is nice (digital zoom = bad).

Oops, I did say Ireland, ne? Gomen.

I'm glad Shooby likes Olympus cameras like me, though that Nikon sounds beefy too. I did no small amount of homework of digicams and I'm still looking for the right match for me. BTW, Shooraijin, is that a Nikon Coolpix camera?

Coolpix 990, yes. It's a couple of years old, a hand-me-down from my parents who have upgraded to a Coolpix 5000.

I like that model a lot. Was real close to getting one before I plunked down on a digital projector. If you're having trouble mounting the 'cam to the Mac, could you use a digital media reader with better success?

That's probably what I'll do, I'm just a cheapskate. :)

I'll second that....

You know, you can get a nice media reader for about 20 bucks these days, if know where to shop...

Some of the new ones can read all 6, or is it 7 now, types of digimedia. Makes for a good universal external unit, or a great read-it-all internal box.

At least this is until the digidweebs come up with another digital card technology, which will be in about a month from now. ;2)
