Jesus Christ Superstar, a rock opera by Andrew Loyd(sp?) Webber (same guy that made the Phantom of the Opera), made in the 1960's-1970's is, of course, about Christ in the last week before His crucifixion. So, what do you all think about it? Personally, I love it. It focuses on some of the human aspects of Christ, because He was both human and divine. However, the mother of a close friend says it's sacreligious. This close friend happens to like it though. ^.^

Can you tell me what the musical said about Christ? Did it say he was here to save us from sin or was he "just a cool guy?"

It ended with the crucifixion as I recall, and most of the people who called it blasphemous did so because they thougt it turned Jesus into a sort of hippy preacher, denying the divine elements.

On the other hand, one teacher I had pointed out that when it came out, it did get a lot of people of that generation talking about God

I have never had the desire to watch it...as I am of the opinion is a mockery of Christs sacrafice.

I had to watch it for a school outing... it GREATLY implied that Jesus and Mary Magdelene were in a... relationship. However, since I saw it years ago, my memory is a bit fuzzy as to the rest, but I do remember leaving there feeling very disgusted and dirty.

The thing between Mary and Jesus was the only part that really bothered me. I refuse to listen to that song. While the movie ended in the crucifixion, when the director was trying to get a sunset shot for when the credits roled, a shepard showed up with his sheep. They don't know whom he was, but ended up getting him in the shot as well. So, as the credits are rolling, the viewer sees the sheep and their shepard, wrapping the whole thing up so won't be just another secular movie. My best friend's mother said that. ^.^

What the musical said about Christ... hmm.... that's hard to answer. It does portray him as more than "a cool guy". It doesn't go into detail about his divinity, don't know why, but, in my opinion, it shows that he was human, but more than human... There's parts where it showed him healing people as well as teaching. Throughout the thing he is constantly referred to as "Christ" which isn't his last name, but whom he is, the Christ, the Saviour...

Yeah, a lot of people were brought closer to God after it came out, especially the man who played Jesus...

Well, I was just curious as to what people thought about it! ^ ^;

The man who played Jesus originally (Jeff Fenholt) was a Christian-hating drug addict who loved fame. It was only years later that he became a Christian, after his wife became one. He beat her regularly, but eventually they came to an agreement that as long as she didnt preach at him, she could do what she wanted. To cut a long story short, he got convicted and repented.

I personally do not care for the movie, but I don’t think it’s too offensive, either.

In the original version of the title song, the refrain was "Who the **** do you think you are." It's since been edited with the expletive deleted, but that's the reason it was considered sacriligeous at the time. Here's hoping enough of an outcry occurs next year when the Davinci Code hits the theaters. It needs to go down!
