Anime and Manga that seem like they were tailor-made just for you

Postby Haibane Shadsie » Sun Nov 02, 2003 12:43 am

Is there any anime or manga out there that seems... strangely... "you"?

I got turned on to Haibane Renmei because a friend who was watching it fansubbed told me that it seemed like it was "made for me". Oddly enough, I know an anime that seems even more like it was "made for me" - though I'm a bigger fan of Haibane Renmei and Trigun than of it...

"Petshop of Horrors". I'm fan of the manga, too, since the manga started coming out in English translation. I haven't watched the anime in a long time, but I've been reading the manga. I think I like the manga better, but only because it is longer, more stories. (The "Petshop of Horrors" anime is only a 4 episode OVA series). My favorite story of it is still "Despair" - which is the same in the anime and manga - and the anime has colors and music and voices!

Anyway... this series seems like it was "made for me". You see... Since I was... well, possibly since I was born, I've loved animals. I LOVE animals! I love both real animals and mythic animals. I grew up around lots of animals. A couple of years ago, I even got to work in a zoo. It was great! And... though I'm definitely NOT a horror movie fan, I do like creepy TV series, such as "The X-Files" and little creepy sci-fi anthology series such as "The Outer Limits".

"Petshop of Horrors" is a combination of all of these. It's a series of creepy short stories that make you think, all involving mythical animals. (They only APPEAR human to their buyers - initially!)

It's odd. Though I love it lots, it's not my most favorite anime of all time... but it seems almost like it was tailor made for me.

note my avatar. first proper anime that i came contact with, other than Nadia, but i haven't seen that anime much at all, other than occasional ads on TV about it. well, didn't see it. oh yeah, DBZ is in the list, but no, that's definately not anything like me.

so yeah. NGE is just like me.

fear the days when i get really, really angry for no particular reason whatsoever...

but on days when i feel like being all 'lifted', it'd be... GRANZORT! mwha ha ha :D you can search it up and see what kind of anime it is. oh yeah, i used to watch that thing long, long time ago...

Interesting question. I have two different ways of looking at "tailor-made". The first would be animes that really strike a chord with me--where the resonate with my life or self. The second is just animes that have everything I like in terms of entertainment. Those would be my favorite animes--The Vision of Escaflowne and Slayers.

The first, the animes that really resonate with me--I can think of two where I could really identify with the characters on a realistic level, and not just one character. One is Fruits Basket--I can see parts of myself in several of the Sohmas, and bits of my life in many of their lives. The second, which is an anime I never really got into and in fact have only seen the first volume of, is Kare Kano. I see parts of myself in both of the main characters Yukino and Arima.

heh..My current craze: Naruto

When I first watched a random episode, I just fell in love with it. I just wanted to watch more and more...and then, read more and more manga. :dizzy: It's funny, this has never happened to me before. I enjoy the action and plot but more importantly, I enjoy the diversity in character types plus the character depth/development (many series lack just that!) Also, the mangaka had a lot of good values and messages in it.

Well I think it´s allready said, Macross.. it´s all about me, specially the first series(it was lunched in the USA as Robotech, it´s avaliable on sharereactor).

I really like the way the Captain faces the war in a unknown ship, and also the way the pilots face they´re prroblens with life:cool: , I´ve watched it since I was a little boy, over 10 years ago  , and I still like it a lot!

For me the only problem in all the series was Macross7, because it was not that serious when in sight of all macross series..

I fell in love with anime when I watched Nadesico. It really resonated with me because it has a lot of crazy humor, tons of hidden jokes and gags, it makes fun of the characters and the viewers just for watching it, it deals with serious subjects like death and war in a way that is very real and sometimes unglamorous, the "good guys" and "bad guys" are both fighting for the wrong reasons, and of course, the main character (Akito) is perpetually confused about almost everything, which I completely understand, because I fell that way most of the time. Oh yeah, I also feel like Escaflowne was made for me.

Perosnally I would have to say some of them would HAVE to be Ghost In The Machine, You're Under Arrest, Vandread series, and some other favorites. I mean those are just waaaaay too cool. I just wish someone would make a manga or anime series like The Dune Saga. The book Dune, it's sequels, and the Butlerian Jihad books are simply THE BEST SCI-FI BOOKS EVER!! It would be awesome if someone could create a great series for them, since that would be what it would take to truely be able to get a great thing out of it. Movies just can't do it correctly, and that's why they haven't been as big as say Jurasic Park.
