I'm getting a bunch of import DVDs for Rahxephon, and its all in Japanese... I predict... when it comes. Can anyone tell me how to turn on the English subtitles?

Do you know any Japanese? Or maybe hiragana/katakana? Can you give us screen shots when they show up, and we'll see if we can decyper them? When I got some DVDs that we all in Japanese, here's how I figued it out...

Get a piece of paper, and draw out the main menu on the DVD. Place a number by each of the menu options. Press the first one, and see if it plays the movie, or if it brings up a sub menu. If it plays, you can write 'Play Movie' by that one. If it brings up a menu, make a drawing of that. Select the first option, then go back and play the movie. If it's in english, or has japanese subtitles, etc, write that by the appropriate link.

I'll admit it's time consuming, but if you can't find a way to read it, it's the best you can do. Let us know when it comes, and if you can get us a screen shot, we'll see if we can read the kana and translate it for you.

I hate to say this, but unless you bought HK bootlegs, there shouldn't be any English subtitles.

If they're HK bootlegs, how does one get anime not licensed yet in the UK??? (other than fansubs)

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp sells authentic Japanese DVD's. The main reason I don't support bootlegs is because the money goes to the bootleggers, not the creators who worked so hard to create the show for your enjoyment. This is one of the biggest reason anime is so expensive.

About subtitles: Your DVD remote should have a button on it that toggles the subtitles on and off. If they're HK bootlegs, it's possible the menus will be in English. I've never bought an HK DVD so I wouldn't know.

One thing you should know about HK DVD's: HK DVD's are known to sometimes have bad video quality, sound, and subtitle translations.
