I also claim Chrono Trigger as the best RPG, period. Yes, the PS1 loading times are annoying. That's why you get the SNES version. It's VERY hard to find, near-impossible I would say. I found mine in a bargain bin at an EB Games for forty bucks. Yes, it's THAT good.
Keep in mind, though, that for what it's worth, it IS a Super Nintendo game. If you are under 20 and are used to the glitzy realistic graphics of Playstation games, you're not going to be impressed with Chrono Trigger. However, for "old" people like me, Chrono Trigger was visually and musically impressive, with an in-depth storyline the likes of which were rarely seen in those days, outside the Final Fantasy series, which we only got 2/3 of on Super Nintendo.
Chrono Cross...was a million seller, and rightfully so. However, fans are divided on this game. When you start playing it, you will notice that it seems to have very little, if anything, to do with Chrono Trigger. However, this changes near the end of disc one, and you will see that Cross has EVERYTHING to do with Trigger.
That said, fans are divided on a couple of things. First of all, Chrono Cross has a very, very, VERY confusing storyline, requiring at least two or three playthroughs to even BEGIN to understand what the heck's going on. Second, it plays extreme havoc with the Trigger universe. I refuse to put any spoilers, but chances are if you hold Trigger near and dear to your heart, Cross will slightly infuriate you. Finally, the whole point of Chrono Cross is to give a sense of finality to a minor character in Trigger. Finally, you will see historically inaccurate things. Chrono Cross happens twenty years after Trigger...putting it in 1020 AD. Yet somehow they have electric guitars. Also, Lucca expressed amazement at Robo in Trigger...a humanoid robot! Remarkable! Yet, in 1020, the Porre Army somehow manages to have a fully-functional cyborg that is superior to Robo in almost every regard. Explain THAT one to me, if you will.
That said, the graphics are impressive (especially for the time), the music is an absolute masterpiece, throwing in some remixes for classic Trigger tunes as well. Sadly, there is no return of Magus...ironic considering that the storyline almost BEGS for his presence. Like it or hate it, Cross is nonetheless a good game, and I recommend it.
EDIT: As far as new games in the Chrono series, no definite plans. For at least six years, I have been hearing rumors of the third game being called Chrono Break, but still no development...unless Squenix is keeping it SUPER secret, which I doubt. I really do wish they would resurrect the series, though.

It's believed that Magus is actually Guile.... as a matter of fact, I'm 95% sure it's official.
the music is an absolute masterpiece
I started playing it and found it fun but seriously, a 'masterpeice'? 'Square`s best game?!' The sequel looks so much more enjoyable. Are the making a third because I feel like they need to make a trilogy. Whenever RPGs make a sequel they hould at least make another one. Final fantasy and Dragon Quest have picked up the habit and thankfully Grandia is too!

http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/news/ square-enix filled a cease and desist order with these guys to get them to stop working on the game, and thusly they have, this leads me to believe that they are working on a new (or perhaps updated) chrono game, perhaps they will release all three in a series, i'd really like to see a game that would bridge the gap between chrono trigger and chrono cross, i do know some of the things that connect the two stories, but there's still a lot that i have yet to know about (what can i say, i haven't even layed eyes on radical dreamers)

I also hate how Chrono has no personallity. I want the dang guy to talk!!
Tom Dincht wrote:Omigod, it almost seems like you and Azier are like twin brothers and it seems like you post at the same time.
And you both seem to have the same personallity. Hm...
