Chrono Games

Postby Tommy » Sun Apr 03, 2005 7:15 am

I see people call Chrono Trigger a masterpeice in threads like these and reviews which is the one of main reasons I bought Final Fantasy chronicles which contains Final Fantasy IV and Chrono trigger.

Another reason is I was in the store looking for an RPG and I found 'Chrono Cross' which had my favorite PS1 kind of graphics such as FF8 or 9. Also I`ve herd nothing bad about it in reviews so I decided I`d buy it. I looked at the box and it said it was a direct sequel so I picked up FFChronicles instead and I plan to buy the 2nd once i beat the 1st.

I started playing it and found it fun but seriously, a 'masterpeice'? 'Square`s best game?!' The sequel looks so much more enjoyable. Are the making a third because I feel like they need to make a trilogy. Whenever RPGs make a sequel they hould at least make another one. Final fantasy and Dragon Quest have picked up the habit and thankfully Grandia is too!

Exactly how far into it are you? Personally I'd say Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever made. The sequel was actually enjoyable, but not nearly as good as the original. (The sequel lacks the original development team behind the original.) Of course it's up to you to decide..... but I love it.

The Chronicles version I didn't care for much though.... it had too many slowdown problems compared to the SNES version. (Square had apparately not mastered the PSONE technology as this was one of their first releases for the console.)

Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG, period. it had so much story, and excellent graphics for the time (they still look good to me XD). the gameplay was challenging but not impossible, and it had like, 12 different endings! how fun is that?

yeah, the PSone version's loading times are pretty annoying, but I got used to it eventually.

I have yet to play Chrono Cross, and honestly I haven't heard a whole lot about it. I'll probably pick up a copy eventually.

Yep, Chrono trigger is my favorite RPG also. (followed closely by ff6) Play the game some more. IMO, the games' real fun begins once you've beaten it once.

Being a resident semi-expert regarding Chrono Trigger...

I also claim Chrono Trigger as the best RPG, period. Yes, the PS1 loading times are annoying. That's why you get the SNES version. :P It's VERY hard to find, near-impossible I would say. I found mine in a bargain bin at an EB Games for forty bucks. Yes, it's THAT good.

Keep in mind, though, that for what it's worth, it IS a Super Nintendo game. If you are under 20 and are used to the glitzy realistic graphics of Playstation games, you're not going to be impressed with Chrono Trigger. However, for "old" people like me, Chrono Trigger was visually and musically impressive, with an in-depth storyline the likes of which were rarely seen in those days, outside the Final Fantasy series, which we only got 2/3 of on Super Nintendo.

Chrono Cross...was a million seller, and rightfully so. However, fans are divided on this game. When you start playing it, you will notice that it seems to have very little, if anything, to do with Chrono Trigger. However, this changes near the end of disc one, and you will see that Cross has EVERYTHING to do with Trigger.

That said, fans are divided on a couple of things. First of all, Chrono Cross has a very, very, VERY confusing storyline, requiring at least two or three playthroughs to even BEGIN to understand what the heck's going on. Second, it plays extreme havoc with the Trigger universe. I refuse to put any spoilers, but chances are if you hold Trigger near and dear to your heart, Cross will slightly infuriate you. Finally, the whole point of Chrono Cross is to give a sense of finality to a minor character in Trigger. Finally, you will see historically inaccurate things. Chrono Cross happens twenty years after Trigger...putting it in 1020 AD. Yet somehow they have electric guitars. Also, Lucca expressed amazement at Robo in Trigger...a humanoid robot! Remarkable! Yet, in 1020, the Porre Army somehow manages to have a fully-functional cyborg that is superior to Robo in almost every regard. Explain THAT one to me, if you will.

That said, the graphics are impressive (especially for the time), the music is an absolute masterpiece, throwing in some remixes for classic Trigger tunes as well. Sadly, there is no return of Magus...ironic considering that the storyline almost BEGS for his presence. Like it or hate it, Cross is nonetheless a good game, and I recommend it.

EDIT: As far as new games in the Chrono series, no definite plans. For at least six years, I have been hearing rumors of the third game being called Chrono Break, but still no development...unless Squenix is keeping it SUPER secret, which I doubt. I really do wish they would resurrect the series, though.

I must have gotten lucky, if it is that hard to find; I don't remember how much I paid for my copy, but I'm sure it wasn't that much.

I enjoy Chrono Trigger quite a bit, but I'm not sure I would call it the best RPG of all time (although I am hardly an expert). It was an excellent game, but I generally prefer games that take longer to get through and have a bit more complexity.

Look at how much technology has improved since 1985 especially video game graphics. I`m under 14 so that`s why I don`t find the game that impressive. I did play it over my cousins house on SNES once when I was 7. I also grew up loveing the original Mario and Sonic. I got my 1st system at 4 which was a Gameboy. First gme ever was the original Kirby. It took me awhile to figure out the last boss......well I soon won.

Favorite Storyline Ever: FF7 and 8 are tied.

I love the Chrono games. I've never finished either though because I'm at a hard point in both of them, but I just haven't played either in almost two years.

Kaemmerite basically said all of what I would have said otherwise but I'll reply to a few things.

It's believed that Magus is actually Guile.... as a matter of fact, I'm 95% sure it's official.

No, Guile is not Magus.

He was originally intended to be Magus but the game designers changed their minds at some point during Chrono Cross' development. Masato Kato, the Director and Scenario Writer, directly stated this in an interview so it is official that Guile is not Magus.
If you don't believe me, I can direct you to the interview...

the music is an absolute masterpiece

Yasunori Mitsuda is one of my favorite composers. The Celtic-like music that he composed for Chrono Cross is awesome.

A third game? They might make one. It was certainly popular enough.
I enjoyed both games quite a bit so I hope that they will consider making one eventually.

Heh heh...MD, you and Azier have such a similar avatar I almost thought it was the same person. I just wanted to point out evidence in addition to what you said, MD.

Having played the entire game with Guile in my party (except when he is not able to be there for the small portion as Lynx), I am sure Guile is not Magus.

EVIDENCE:

-Guile does not act, talk or dress like Magus
-Guile does not have Magus's pale complexion.
-Guile uses a wand, not a scythe like Magus.

The BIGGEST evidence, though, is this. Magus was all about finding Schala in Chrono Trigger. It was his whole reason for joining Crono's party...to find Schala. I have beaten Time Devourer with Guile in your party and gotten the "good ending" using the Chrono Cross. Know what Guile says?

"Well, it was fun, Serge. See you later."

That's IT. If Guile was Magus, he would've IMMEDIATELY recognized Schala for who she was, and the ending would've been more involved. The fact that he doesn't recognize Schala AT ALL proves it to me.

Also, he doesn't recognize other things Magus would recognize. Ozzie, Flea, and Slash are an example, he doesn't recognize them, nor do they recognize him. He also doesn't recognize Belthasar, the Guru who stood watch in the End of Time. Pretty strong evidence against, I'd say.

The whole Guile/Magus debate stems from this:

In Radical Dreamers, the sequel to Chrono Trigger, one of your party members was named Maguile, and wore a mask. At the end of Radical Dreamers, Maguile removes his mask and reveals that he is in fact Magus.

When brought over to America, Guile's name was CHANGED. In the Japanese version of Chrono Cross, Guile's name was ALFADOR, which veteran Trigger players may remember as Janus's cat. I think, when it was brought to America, considering that Guile floated like Magus and wore a mask, the American developers decided to rename Alfador as Guile, as kind of a homage to Radical Dreamers.

Ah, I see. Anyways......

As for the third game, I once read in a gaming mag (might have been EGM) that Square was working on a game called 'Chrono Break', allthough it's been several years with no other word on it. Perhaps it was scrapped?

this link is to a site pertaining to a fan made game called chrono resurrection that was basically supposed to be an updated version of chrono trigger (please, oh please check out the screenshots, beautiful is all i can say),
http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/news/ square-enix filled a cease and desist order with these guys to get them to stop working on the game, and thusly they have, this leads me to believe that they are working on a new (or perhaps updated) chrono game, perhaps they will release all three in a series, i'd really like to see a game that would bridge the gap between chrono trigger and chrono cross, i do know some of the things that connect the two stories, but there's still a lot that i have yet to know about (what can i say, i haven't even layed eyes on radical dreamers)

Did someone in this thread say the loading problums were because FFChronicles was Square`s first try at a PS1 game.....Oh, I beg to differ. There is an advertisement for FF10 and Spirits Within (XP) in the booklet and the copyrght says 2001 in the booklet and the main title screen says it too. Therefor whoever said that is wrong and i am right...........anyone up for some rice pudding?

Nah, Im just kidding around. It really was made in 2001 but I was kidding when I rubbed it in and requested rice pudding.

Oh crap, I picked the wrong time to play Chrono Trigger huh? I was just thinking a remake would be cool, but wouldn`t it be less enjoyable if I played the original and then played Ressurection....unless it comes out of Gamecube. God, I hate GC.

I also hate how Chrono has no personallity. I want the dang guy to talk!!

Read Yeshua-Knight's post again. Resurrection was a
fan-made project that some people were working on. However, Square-Enix wasn't very happy and forced them to stop their project for
copyright violations or whatever....
Thus, there will be no remake from anyone anytime soon.

Well, this is sadly how far I made on C.T. in 2 hours.

I`m at the dome in the year 2300 A.D. and you have to go to the basement or something.

This game really gets better as you go along. Sorry about my 1st post, I was too early in the game to form an opinion. FF4 is pretty fun also.

Yeah. You still have quite a ways to go.

As far as Crono talking is concerned, he does say a few lines in one of the endings, but otherwise he remains a silent protagonist throughout the game.

Crono I believe says something in the Creators' Edition ending but I can't quite remember. I love Chrono Trigger and it was the game that got me into rpgs to begin with.

Chrono Cross is also very good and has more than a few connections with the famed first game. With the exception of new character designs, Chrono Trigger had Akira Toriyama and Chrono Cross had the person who did the designs for Escaflowne (Sorry the name escapes me).

Yeah I like the art style for both of them ALOT. They`re my favorite.

Chrono Cross reminds me of FF9 in a few ways which is my favoritekind of PS1 RPG graphics.

Chrono Trigger reminded me of being little and watching Dragon Ball. Crono really looks like Goku as far as his facial details are concerned.

When you encounter Magus at a certain point, (WAAAYYYY later in the game) you will have the option to either fight him or some other choice I forget which prompts him to join you; if you choose the latter, he comes in EXTREMELY handy.

Magus isn't really good or bad. He's more or less only concerned about his own personal agenda.....

As for Guile, he's a magician who can join at one of the earlier parts in Chrono Cross.
