DO NOT buy a PSP (important read)

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Postby Arnobius » Mon Apr 04, 2005 5:19 pm

Yeah. I remember when I bought my first PS1, I think I put over $400 on my card for the console (I think it was $299 or $399 back when I first got it in 1996 (?) plus a few games at $60 a pop, and a RF adapter (had a coax TV).

Of course I've been burnt before by bad systems. I didn't want to take a chance on the Saturn/Dreamcast because of my bad luck with the Sega 32X add on for the Genesis (Genesis-- Now THAT was a great system :thumb: ).

Once you are burnt though, you tend to stay suspicious. Like now, when I do PC games, I get real nervous about anything UbiSoft, since their games have trashed Windows or failed to work more than other companies.

Yes, We charged it overnight. We had also been using it while it was plugged into the wall up to this point, because we had access to be able to do so.

Ya, who knows. It's looking like, if anything, the sony PSP's biggest problem is being..... inconsistent.

kaemmerite wrote:PSP games are approximately forty bucks, which is almost as much as a console title. This is a major factor for why I am not getting a PSP...well, that, and there aren't any titles at the moment that interest me. Same goes for DS. At the moment, I am perfectly happy with my GBA SP and my extensive library of games for it.

At least until some decent RPGs come out for DS or PSP.

Wow, that's better than where I am, where the stores I saw were in the high $50's to $60. I guess that changes what I said about PSP prices then if yours is what everyone else is experiencing. Prices in the $30's would probably be doable while the system is new. After that it depends on the long term reputation for the PSP...

that may be. i seem to have gotten lucky and got a near perfect psp. the things tough and took a fall once (got knocked out of my hand by a freind (was so mad(and it had its cover on))) and its fine. but if you look back everything that is brand new has some troubles at launch, cars, electronics, almost anything will have trouble till the bugs are worked out. and from what it seems some psps have bugs and some dont.

after seeing anime heretics post i wonder who it was that was selling them for 60 bucks? eb has all the launch games and they are 40 for almost all of them and 50 for the occasional one (curse dynasty warriors for being 50) man some people lost some money if they were selling the games for 60

Let's see: Best Buy, EB, Suncoast (I was in there and watched a guy buy 2 units and a few games for $900) and a few others. Of course, there was an article in my local paper on how the Bay Area was not doing as well as the rest of the country with opening sales (only area not to sell out entire stock I'm told). Hearing what you guys said about prices, I'm starting to wonder if people tried to gouge prices and got burned for that. If that's the case, you guys can disregard what I said about prices, since what I was experiencing wasn't normal.

Of course the $900 for the 2 units and 3 games I saw at Suncoast-- well I'm pretty sure the manager was selling the day before the official release too...

I heard about that. Are there compatibility issues between a JP unit and a US game, or was that just a PS2 region code thing?

oh really! That awesome...

I probably won't get one until the next model comes out and the price goes down, because as great as the hardware is, I don't play handheld games much. BUT! If is gets a good number of rpgs on it... ^___^ I will definately get it!

as for the ds, I'll just pass on that and wait for the new gb *o*/

PSP. Gameboy with 3D graphics and features that I wouldn't use.
Overpriced junk. I'd much rather play Froger or Berserk than "Wipe Out Pure" or "[sports game]".

The only two interesting games would be Lumines and Metal Gear Ac!d.

Just FYI, animeheritic, pretty much EVERYTHING is more expensive here in the bay area. And yeah, when you start looking at buying a console at SUNCOAST (end ESPECIALLY games) you'll pay WAY more. Well, at least the one in valco was way over priced...

volt if you want to back it up just plug a mini usb cable into the psp then into the computer then copy the files to the computer. its not as hard as you make it out to be. sure you can do it that way but why not use one of the two methods to put a copy of it on your computer? thats one of the reasons sony made it.

and onto the microsoft thing, you can choose not to accept microsoft in gaming, there have been no monopolies in gaming since the gameboy and the psp has broken that, given them a bit of competition to make them try a little harder. sure you cant not go for them in most computers but you can in gaming. one other monopoly you cant fight is gas....

I did not see Nintendo helping fans out with backwards compatibility

Gameboy Colour - Compatible with GB games
Gameboy Advance - Compatible with GB and GBC games
DS - Compatible with GB, GBC and GBA games.
Revolution - Confirmed to be compatible with Gamecube games.

---------------
Volt be careful with getting PS3's that "fell of the back of a truck", they're probably broken...

Here's my opinion

I hate Ridge Racer, Wipeout, sport games, GTA, Metal Gear etc. They bore me, so PS stuff is out for me.
I've had a few friends who had the 'Disc Read Error' problem. One of my friends, his PS (original PS), the lid is broken, he uses an elastic band to keep it down now :P

I got a DS a few weeks back. I have Wario Ware and Mario 64 and I'm impressed with it. It took me to now to get used to the Thumb pad thing for M64, which is a bit of a downer, I practically had to re-learn all the controls! But I'm getting the hang of it now and I'm almost as agile on it as I was with the N64.

The PSP looks to be powerful, but what difference is there between it and a Palm Top? A D-pad? From what I've seen of it there isn't much difference.
The DS' two screens are going to be very interesting. Anyone who unlocked the Hunters video knows what I mean. The possibilities for those screens....

Man, they made a mistake dude. Let it go. I think gamers have become spoiled as far as new stuff goes. I remember back in the NES golden days...you would almost be done a game...and a particle of dust would move or somthing and the game would freeze up. Crap happens, nowhere on a PS2 box does it promise to be perfect. As long as the good out-weighs the bad I see no need to complain.

Also.

So i have to pay another $26 for a 8mb memory card just so i can back up my original data that never should of been erased in the first place if sony had just simple TRIED the disc before mass producing and releasing them.

I mean for $26 I can get a 128 mb flash card or USB memory stick. Instead I have to pay $26 for 8mb worth of hundreds of hours of data from game saves. And then I would have to pay another $26 dollars for another Memory card, and every time I save on one I have to save on the other, thus wasting countless time.

Deal. I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who use one memory card. Since the PS1 days I have always owned more then one memory card because you never know when one of your friends is going to yank it out of a system while its loading ;) or, if someone sits on it. Etc. Considering the money you brag about spending on eletronics online...another memory card is not going to break the bank. Geez back in the PS1 days, if I had an uber important file, ala FF7 file or somthing it might be on up to 3 cards. I only own 2 PS2 cards, but most times there never at the same place...so in case of like...mudslide or armageddon..one can survive. Meaning of the story? Don't be cheap, get a second memory card and save important files.

Easier alternative to all the memory cards, use reliable cartridges with built in storage.

I have Gameboy games dating mid 90s and SNES games with perfectly functioning memory despite all the batterings they've taken.

Most consoles are region coded. Mainly the major ones like PSone, PS2, Gamecube, ect.

my mistake i thought you where talking about the psp. and dude volt you DO need to let it go. mistakes happen, crap happens. i love video games and such but did anything break that couldnt be fixed? game saves can be redone. you ps2 wasnt broken by the demo was it? anyways if thats the underlying reason for your hatred of the psp and the ps2 i think you should let it go. if video games are that important that it makes you angrily hate the system and want to denounce it you need to step back and ask what is wrong here.
anyways im stepping back from this topic until it goes back to what it was originally about (the psp even though it was made to bash it) or dies out, to much bad expereinces people have had making them bitter (myself included due to having so many people rant at the psp wherever i go online).

Even though I have several, I typically usually use one memory card.... when it gets to full, I just delete a bunch of older save files. I haven't ever had any of my memory cards deleted, but the one I've been usuing lately for my PSone isn't Sony..... (I don't think)

It might tick me off a bit if I were to lose all my save files, but I don't think I would care that much.
