I have notice that the Japanese often put "Chan" after some names. What does this mean?

It's a term of endearment, usually applied to girls, women or younger boys. Another one you hear a lot is -kun (usually applied to teenage guys or young men). You wouldn't use this with someone off the street (you'd use -san or -sama to refer to them by name; it would be overly familiar otherwise).

The Japanese can be very formal with the way they address one another. There are several titles that are added to one's name. If you were talking to a younger kid in a semi-informal manner, you'd say like ... Hannah-chan. "Chan" is just a term for someone younger than yourself.
