I listen to a lot of different genres. In fact, I have representatives in my collection of everything from rap to traditional Japanese music.

But certain genres are definitely my favorites - I spend the majority of the time listening to them.

My favorites are metal, industrial, hard rock and techno. I actually run a metal/industrial radio station (Steel Templar Radio!), which you'd see the link to if the sigs were working.

There is a song by the band Hammerfall called "Templars of Steel". The song is essentially about all the true metalheads out there (the templars of the title). I always loved the song. At the same time, the Knights Templar were an order of knights dedicated to defending the Church long ago. So I felt the name "Steel Templar" would describe me as both a staunch fan of metal and a Catholic.

What state am I from? Or what state am I in?

I'm not really from anywhere. In a technical sense, I am from Washington State. I was born there. But my father is a (now retired) USAF officer. He has been active duty for most of my life. So it was that when I was still a baby, I was moved off to Japan. And from there to a whole bunch of other places. So it is that I have nowhere to really claim as my home except wherever I happen to be living.

And at this moment I happen to live in Virginia, near Washington DC.

Now to Myoti's question:

I can tell you a little about the movie, I think, without spoiling anything. In the beginning of the film, Oh Dae-su finds himself kidnapped by unknown assailants. They place him in what is basically an extremely dingy hotel room with a steel door and no windows. The guards bring him food but will not speak to him. He has a TV, but no other contact with the outside world. No one there will even speak to him. He has no idea where he is, who has imprisoned him, how long he will be there, or why this was being done to him.

Eventually they let him go. Fifteen years later. And he still has no clue what happened to him.

Believe it or not, that's just the setup. The movie is actually about his search for the truth of what happened and revenge against whoever was behind it. At one point in his quest, he has to fight a number of thugs. His weapon of choice - the hammer.

I like roleplaying in general because I enjoy taking part in the story, creating a character, etc. . I like roleplaying here at CAA because in addition to those things I get to practice my writing *and* I have such great people to play with.

I became a Christian at some point I don't recall when I was a little kid. I was raised Protestant. I converted to Catholicism, though, when I was 20.

I joined CAA because it looked like a cool community to be a part of. Most of my Christian friends do *not* partake of anime/manga. As well, this is one of the few message boards on the net that isn't filled with people who make you despair of humanity's future.

My favorite anime is Ghost in the Shell. My favorite manga is Love Hina.

Interesting. May I ask what exactly it was that attracted you to Catholicism?

I had a lot of influence from a couple of very important friends. The whole story would be somewhat long. I shall outline out my main reasons.

First, let me say that I have come to the conclusion that all doctrinal differences between Protestants and Catholics can find a common root in one thing. This is the fact that Protestants believe in sola scriptura where Catholics believe in the authority of the Holy Church to interperet scripture and dictate doctrine. When I decided to become a Catholic the question I asked myself was, "Do I accept the authority of the Church?". The answer was yes.

One other thing I must preface all this with is that, whatever criticisms I may have of Protestant theology, I have a great respect for and feel a great kinship with anyone who truly follows Christ. My parents are strong believers and it was they who first taught me the love of God, for which I am exceedingly grateful.

Basically, my attraction to Catholicism has two aspects: Intellectual and Spiritual.

Intellectually, I have come to believe that the Catholic Church's authority is important to the faith and makes sense for what Christ established on earth. If every person is left to interpret scripture as they see fit without a single authority to look to, then each will interpret it through the lense of their own sinful nature. Certainly, there is always the guidance of God. But there is a tendency, which I have seen in my own self, to every once in awhile take the scriptures as you want to see them. Even if that's a subconscious thing. In the case of Catholicism, there is little room for error when it comes to important matters. Anyone who opens up the Catechism can see without a doubt that, for instance, abortion is always wrong for a Catholic. There is no room for argument on such an issue. This kind of definitive authority is essential, I believe, for the continuity of proper moral structure in the faith.

A further function, in the same vein, is the Church's mechanism for approving theological literature. When I open up a theology text and see that it contains the imprimatur then I know it does not contradict the teachings of the faith.

I believe that God, knowing humanity to be what it is, established the Church so that we would have an authority to look to for guidance. I do not believe he would leave such a matter to individuals.

Now for the spiritual side.

There were also a lot of feelings involved with becoming Catholic. When I went to a Catholic church, I could feel the holiness....what I later realized was the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Further, in Catholic churches there is a strong sense of sanctity about certain ceremonies, places, and some things (the Eucharist, for instance). This sanctity and reverance felt right to me.

Finally, even before deciding to become a Catholic, I developed a reverance for the Blessed Mother. I believe that started on one evening when I was very troubled about something and I called one of my close friends who is Catholic. She took me through the Rosary over the phone. It was the first time I had ever heard it. But I will always remember that when she said the line, "O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary." from the Hail, Holy Queen I could hear in her voice how much she really believed that was what Mary was like. I knew she said the Rosary all the time (in fact, I know now she says it every day), and yet she had such honest feeling in saying it.

Much later, I began saying the Hail Mary myself along with my other prayers. I really began to feel like Mary was watching over me and praying for me, like she really was my second mother. The first time I went to a real Catholic service was a novena to the Blessed Mother, in fact.

So there you have the bullet points. LOL. Sorry if it was overlong.
