Much ado about "XD"...

Postby TheMelodyMaker » Wed Mar 02, 2005 8:36 am

Okay... I've seen so many people type it in their posts/PMs/e-mails, and yet I still have yet to figure out exactly what it means. What is this "XD" that people keep typing? Are they trying to hint that it should be what Microsoft should name its next version of Windows? Or are they just supposed to be short little giggles of a sort? (I remember someone once mentioning it to be like an evil grin, but sometimes it doesn't seem appropriate in the current context.)

Please, someone enlighten this poor confused MelMak... @_@

It took me a while to figure this out as well. I think it's a laughing face. Like, when you close your eyes and just laugh. That's my interpretation, anyway ^_^

My evil grin is: (stolen from Sunako)

X = eyes. The first half of the X is the eyebrows and the bottom half is the eyes.

D = big giant grin.

Usually it's used when speaking of bishies. It IS sort of like an evil grin...

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who's traveled far and cries for rest

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

Yeah, it's a face and not some abbreviationg for a word that contains X and D.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

*nods*

When people are frustrated sometimes, they will put >< as a smiley, to indicate that. Well, turn >< on its side and what do you get? X

As shown in the above smiley, if you grin very largely, it looks kind of like a D on its side. If you were to laugh so hard that your eyes closed, it would look quite similar to:

XD

By the same token, sometimes XP is used to indicate the tongue sticking out, and is not always an indication of a certain crappy operating system.

Okay... ^_^; So based on that plethora of explanations, I'm now getting the impression that many of you simply laugh a little bit too much. (Although, is that possible? ) Maybe I'll just continue interpreting it as a short giggle. *shrug*

I suppose I should have asked what the difference between XD and LOL is...

hah I'm guilty of using this symbol often enough. I was quite surprised that ppl described it as an evil grin though. To me, evil is --> or MSN's (6)

The difference between XD and LOL? I see the former as an excited huge smile/grin while LOL involves laughing. Think of XD of an expression of "Yes!! or Yahoo! *highfives*"

other variations include X3 and XO.

X = eyes. 3 = kitty-like mouth. kind of like "teehee". it's a giggly face, sort of.

XO is an angry face...with the eyes shut, mouth wide open and yelling.

I find LOL to be a bit over used and insencere, so if I want to indicate that I am laughing, I would be more likely to type *Chuckle* Because I would be chuckleing and not bawling with laughter.

I use whatever occurs to me at the moment. I find myself using "^^" a lot, the little anime happy-closed eyes. I also like "X3", the kitty-cat, and recently, I've been using "XD" and "o.o" a lot, and even "XDD" which is like "XD" x 2.
Think happy thoughts.

Yay! Methinks I like this conversation! *goes into Teacher Mode*
For "XD," turn your head to the left and look really hard. It's the same as ":)" only the mouth is open. Like ^_^, too, only, again, the mouth is open, and it's sideways....erm....
lol and LOL both stand for "Laugh Out Loud." The difference between uppercase and lowercase being, uppercase implies harder laughter..that is, to me, anyhow....
Once you get XD and LOL down, you can add tons of fun variations. Lately, I've been favoring the X3 (*see username*) and also =3, :3, etc....
And then there's the fun fun FUN rotflmso which means "Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Shoelaces Off." I saw me mam use this on an RPG once. ^.^ It was so awesomely clever that I adopted it and used it as my own.... *Exit Teacher Mode*
....and I've also found whole sections (on websites) dedicated to tons of different variations of all of those faces. 0_o;; Yeah, kinda weird, but fun.
Most people use the sideways ones (XD, :), <8D, etc) so when you type something like ^_~ or @_@ they get confused and ask you what they mean...

.............the was the longest pointless post I've ever posted...........

*...floats away...*
