Metropolis

Has anyone seen the movie Metropolis? I thought it was very good, although it had a very different art style. I thought it was pretty cool how they incorparated the Tower of Babil into the story.

i saw it hopein it would be really good but i was really disapointed. ive sean the original fritz lang metropilis and it was incerdibly long, and the anime was no differnat even with the addition of sound and language. plus the style was very unanime, reminded me too much of disney. but even with all that, the animation was very good, and they did keep the story very much the same which was kinda cool.

The animation was very unique, however it didn't keep me interested long enough, lol, so I had to skip a few scenes at the beginning of the DVD.

I liked it quite a lot. Having seen the Fritz Lang film well before Osamu Tezuka's interpretation, I'd say that there really are significant differences between the two stories. The animation style was interesting, but I wouldn't call it Disney, or "anime" though. That it was so different from the norm is hardly a minus as far as I'm concerned; I like to see different styles on occaision, given the sometimes irrtating artisitc uniformity that exists in many anime films. The animation was very much a retro-style affair, probably drawing from a much older anime style. It seemed to incorporate a certain art-deco quality to it, although this should hardly be surprising.

metropolis, the only anime that made me cry because of the song.
I am a big fan louis armstrong and other oldies music.

my favorite part of the flick is when rock hits the switch to "save" his father from the marauding robots. *click* cue I can't stop loving you song. I sat there with tears rolling down my eyes saying I wish I could do that to my dad.

If you all don't recognize the animation style in Metropolis, then go watch Akira, Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Robot Carnival again.

It's basically Osamu Tezuka's character and layout designs with Katsuhiro Otomo's animation style.

I thought it was very well done, even the CGI was a nice touch in many places.

The story was nicely done as well, and though it was several years (well, decades) since I saw the original by Lang, I sensed it was somewhat close to the parts of the original I remembered.

The song at the end was a little surprise, but I chuckled and enjoyed it anyways.

Being that I saw it in a theater with real film and stereo surround, it was well worth it and probably weighted my opinion more to the positive side.

Heck, I bought the DVD, if that means anything. ;2)

Metropolis is actually my favorite movie of all time. I love the animation and the soundtrack is a stroke of genius.

I know that the Tower of Babel is used in the movie, but I was wondering if anyone thought that the movie also tried to portray Tima as a sort of Christ figure (like some movies do). I actually think that with the Tower of Babel reference, that this is entirely a possibility, especially since the Japanese do like to allude to Christianity quite a bit.

If you want my "evidence," just look at the scene where Tima is standing on top of a building and a ray of sunlight is shining on her as a dove comes down to her (I think it comes to her -- I do know that there's a dove in the scene). It sure looks similar to Jesus' baptism to me!

Anyone agree?

Hmm... I think that using good old "christianese", we could say that Tima was a small 's' savior, not the big 'S' Savior, ne? And Neo on Matrix (or serenity on Sailor Moon S) is a small 'm' messiah, not the large 'M' Messiah... I find nothing wrong with that... But, I don't know, maybe it is bad... I don't know if that's what their intention was, but it's possible... There are many biblical allusions in the movie...

I see what you're saying, Bobtheduck, and I know that Tima isn't really Christ or anything. I only meant that the filmmakers were trying to compare Tima to Christ in certain parts (of course, the end of the movie, which I won't spoil, pretty much removes any comparisons to Jesus whatsoever, huh?)

I don't think it's bad to compare a character to Jesus, as long as they don't say that the character IS Christ. Maybe I'm just analyzing this too much?

Oh well. Back to square one: Metropolis is a good movie!
