Favorite original music in video games?

Postby Link Antilles » Thu Jan 20, 2005 12:26 pm

I'm not entirely sure why I prefer music from video games (or movies) over any other kind. Maybe it's the nostalgia or maybe it's just that I'm weird. Nevertheless, I just can't get enough of those catchy little tunes from games like Mario, or those magnificent musical scores in Final Fantasy, or the adrenaline-kicking music from games like Halo and Metal Gear Solid.

Anyways, what's everyone’s top-ten list of best video game music scores/tracks/tunes/entire OST/or-whatnot?

My-top-ten-favorite-list-of-original-video-game-music:

1. Metal Gear Solid 3

2. Red Alert 2

3. Final Fantasy X - Zanarkand

4. Final Fantasy VI - Terra's Theme

5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Saria's Song

6. Knights of the Old Republic - Bastila Shan

7. Knights of the Old Republic - The Jedi

8. Halo 2 - The Mjoinder Mix

9. Metal of Honor Allied Assault

10. Tie between Total Annihilation/Dungeon Siege

Yeah, most of the old school stuff I listen to are the OC remix versions. (VGmix.com does a good job every now and then) Hehe, I use to be a big fan of the Zeal Theme, but I've listen to way too many remix versions of it, lately.

I pop in my FiF The End Is Near CD and start fragging.

for CS some Rage Against The Machine is required.

Not that the in game music is bad....its just that the games i play have NO music.

well...except for all the Zelda games, i raise the volume to max.

As much as I found the story reprehensible, I have to admit that the music for Grandia II was very good.

I think it's a given that FF music will be totally awesome, but I absolutely love the music from IV through VIII. That's Liberi Fatali, Man With the Machinegun, Theme of Love, Aria de Mezzo Carraterre, One-Winged Angel, Terra's Theme, Aerith's Theme, FFVII Overworld theme, all the battle themes, etc. etc.

I also like the music from Blizzard's games, Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo and Metroid Prime's soundtrack is awesome.

Oh, man... someone asked this once at the Guild, and basically I'm with what a bunch of you already said. If someone were to ask me what my favorite music is in one game, I could much more easily come up with an answer. There are just too many good ones to choose from! ^______________^

[Edit: Apparently, all 2 times that I've mentioned that, the thread died. We video game music fans must be a dying breed. ]

Well, I love the music in a lot of games, but most of the time I only listen to it while I'm playing the game. Though, I do listen to it when I'm not a playing a game sometimes...

1. Zelda OoT soundtrack (and various remixes)

4. MGS2, esp. the main theme

5. Halo soundtrack

6. Panser Dragoon Orta soundtrack

7. Morrowind soundtrack/theme

8. C & C series Soundtrack

9. Theif series has a pretty good soundtrack

I'm drawing a blank... guess I'll have to add more later.

My favorite music in a game is overall Chrono Cross...a beautiful set of songs by Yasunori Mistuda who has never failed to impress me.

Other winners are Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, FF VI, Jet Set Radio, Zelda, Xenogears, Suikoden (First one only), Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid and Parappa the Rapper.

Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby soundtracks are good.
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

I'll have to agree with Zedian in saying that CC has my favorite soundtrack.
FF5 was also awesome.
FFX had decent music (The piano piece in the intro is awesome, but there are enough annoying songs in here to make me not like the soundtrack as a whole. Super Smash Bros. Melee has a great soundtrack that redoes a lot of my favorite nintendo tunes very well.
MGS2 was good (and I still haven't heard MGS3, but I want to).
Also, the metroid games thru Super Metroid have very catchy tunes (and very good remixes on ocremix), I really didn't like the GCN Metroid tunes though.
Super Mario World is another old school game with good songs. Probably the best of any mario game to date.
The 'Xeno' games sound like they have some solid songs, but I have yet to play any of them.
Oh yes, Halo. Halo is awesome. Halo 2...eh...more of the same, but still awesome.

Now for something completely off the wall. Two old school games that probably will get no mention. Goldeneye for the N64 (because I love Bond music), and Uniracers (SNES) because it's so darn catchy. Uniracers has songs that scream electric guitar solos aplenty. The system really didn't do the music justice.

Oh yes. The Donkey Kong Country games. Especially 2.

OK. I've proven to everyone that I'm a totally biased old-school gamer. I'm done now.
