free website advertising?

Postby Jaltus-bot » Wed Dec 22, 2004 5:26 pm

What free ways are there to advertise a website? Are there any free search engines or anything I can register a site with?

The easiest I know is to get friends with websites too (if they have a big one, so much the better :D) and share links, preferably with banners. Google likes this, and if more sites link to your website the higher your website will be in ranking when searched, and it gets better from there :)

Google takes a while. What you could try to do is googlebomb your site.

Try an I'm-Feeling-Lucky search for "miserable failure" and you will see a google bomb.

A google bomb usually starts with people linking to another site using certain keywords. This usually starts in peoples' blogs, and it spreads from blog to blog between friends, like a chain letter. Eventually as google updates its index, it associates certain keywords with the particular site that is being linked to.

i think the best way would be like what lorentz said to have friends advertise it on xanga or live journal and all there other sites that would be best way to get people to come to yoursite

Make a banner for your site. Put it in a signature for forums containing a link to your site. That's another free way.

What sort of site do you have? Tweaking around to please Google is definately a good idea. Try and think of a search term commonly typed where the first result has a low PageRank.

To do this, install google toolbar onto IE, type the desired term into Google, and examine the pagerank bar for the first site in the results list. If the first result for the term has a pagerank of 4 or below then you've got a good chance of gunning for #1 or at least pretty high. When users type in your term, your site will appear high on the list PROVIDING you have a pagerank of around 4 or higher.

Getting a high Pagerank involves doing what Lorentzforce said - getting lots of people to link to your site. Your target search term should be integrated into the name of your site so that other people linking to you will show Google what to index under. Also ensure that the term words appear in all pages of your site. In our case, 'Christian' and 'Anime' appear everywhere. People linking to us will tend to use those words as well.

The result for us is that CAA is #1 on Google for "christian anime" which drives a lot of traffic here.. :)

Hope that makes sense.

I cannot find http://www.christianpoetryociety.com even doing a search for the name of the site. I can find a blog refference to it, but not actually that site.

Link to it - it probably hasn't been crawled yet.

To a site that Google sees. Google doesn't automatically know about a site, it has to find it.

Also, Google's deep crawl operates on a monthly schedule, so give it some time.
