What "kind" of anime fan are you?

I am a... *drumroll* high-tech spread-spectrum fan! (a little from column A, a little from B, and a little from C.)

I'm definitely a casual fan. My little sister, however, is between a casual fan and an anime hobbyist. (I haven't convinced her to join this forum, though.) She has a friend that is an anime hobbyist who has a big sister that is an elitist fan. My sister brings over and watches dvds she borrows from her friend's sister all the time so for being just a casual fan, I watch a heck of a lot of anime. That was quite a mouthful . . . uh . . . handful . . . whatever.
I will not waver, doubt or falter for all truth in this world has been written into the book here at my side.

It says Leetest in Leet lingo. Which is a series of numbers and other characters that replaces letters. This first originated from the Megatokyo doujinshi series.

The Anime Hobbyist
-Has seen a wide range of shows outside of Television (going beyond what is being aired.) Yep
-Has a preference of watching anime subtitled\dubbed (depending on the quality of either.) Yep, actually dubbed unless I really like the series
-Buys anime DVDs only when he\she enjoys the series. Yep
-Notices edits, but understands the "broadcasting = edit" rule and goes on watching. Yep, unless they totally butcher it
-Watches fansubs rarely. Never have
-Has gone to an AnimeCon only once. Yep, Nekocon 5
-Watches anime when he\she feels like it or after buying a new series. Yep

Cool thing you made here, very true for me ^^

Hobbyist with a spending problem, I seem to buy a new volume or DVD with every paycheck. My poor, overcrowded book shelf. I just got it in March 2004, and I'm gonna need another one by March 2005.

Actually, leet predates MegaTokyo, and was merely referenced in MT #9. It is the famous MT #9, however, that has become the iconic reference to 1337. I refer you to the Wikipedia (wikipedia.org) article for more information, so as not to clutter the thread.

I'm not sure what category I fall under. -.-
I don't buy the dvds, my brother does. I don't like subtitles either, so where does that leave me? I guess I'm inbetween a casual and a hobbyist.

Elitist, but I only have a few fansubs (to complete my Sailor Moon collection), and I've never been to a con. But those other things describe me to a "T."

I hate to call myself elitist, though. It almost sounds arrogant.

I'm not an anime fan anymore at all, but...

I used to be a casual fan mostly. I think that hobbies should be taken in moderation, but very few anime fans really do that I think. People just tend to take it WAY overboard. When people start speaking that code-switched japanglish crap, then I RUN!

Since you mentioned that your definitions were "loose" I'd like to adjust them a little bit to suit me better. :)

The Casual Fan
-Watches whatever anime is on Television.

Somewhat true. While I don't mind watching anime on TV, it's not what I normally would watch.
-Prefers to watch dubs for simplicity.

Yes, that, and because I'm half blind and am a slow reader x_O Subs are sometimes a pain to watch.
-Rarely buys anime on DVD.

Correct. It's too expensive for me, but I do own two anime dvds that I received as gifts. *dances*
-Never pays attention to edits for broadcasts.

I could sit and watch DBZ on cartoon network and enjoy it for what little it was worth, if I had that kind of time.
-Never has heard of a fansub.

Neg. Fansubs were about all I ever watched. In fact, I've even done my share of fansubbing work.
-Has not been to an AnimeCon.

Almost did once, but I didn't want to be around all the scary people.
-Watches anime whenever it shows up on TV.

Neg. While I wouldn't mind watching anime on TV, if I still had any interest in anime, it's just not a habit that I've picked up.

ANIME FAN "SPECTRUM"

-Has seen "everything" or as much he\she is willing to look into (meaning the goal is to watch as much as possible.)
-Would watch nothing but subtitles.
-Dedicated to buying as many DVD titles as one could afford.
-Easily offended by edits made on TV and would never watch anime broadcasted
-A devoted collector of fansubs and downloads constantly.
-Goes to any anime convention that he\she feels that they must go to get more merchandise.
-Watches anime almost everyday and has a set "agenda" on what series must be finished within the next day.

For me I'm pretty much a hobbyist, though I have never been to a Con and I hardly mind edits on television. Maybe I'm a Casual-hobbyist? :)

I'm pretty mucha hobbyist. Except for the fact that I like subs much better then dubs. There are too many annoying American voice actors/actresses.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I'm basically a hobbyist. I prefer dubs because I always like to do things while I am watching anime, and to have to read subtitles at the same time is a pain. You can ask anyone who knows me really well and they will tell you that I really hate subtitles. I figure that I'll watch it in Japanese when I learn Japanese (which is next semester! Yippee!). Okay, enough rambling on about subtitles. Let's see...other things that make me a hobbyist. Oh, I've only been to one con. That was SDCC '04. I will be going in '05 and going to all four (+ some) days. I only got to go to one day last time, and it wasn't nearly enough. Lastly, I do only buy the series that I am interested in. If I don't like it, I won't buy it. :P

I'm definitely in the hobbyist category. I've met too many elitists that have turned me off into going any deeper. I'll always be a fan, but I will never be insanely obsessed. I hate when people say they are elitists and will only watch the subs. I admit, the voice acting in the Japanses in normally better. I guess I just think if you are really so elite you wouldn't read english subtitles but learn Japanese. Now that would be a true elitist.

If I had to choose based on a one-dimensional scale, I'd choose hobbyist, but my fandom is rather 2 or 3 dimensional... I mean, for one thing I prefer certain genres and avoid others (Example: I like comedy, romance, and enigmatic but avoid dry war, fighting anime, mecha, and just about anything put out by clamp)

There aren't actually that many anime I really enjoy. I hate most of the ones on TV, edited or not, and I prefer subbed to raw or dubbed, but would like to be ABLE to watch something raw... In Nadesico, I prefer the Dub at times I want to watch for the comedy (oh, nadesico is a mecha anime, but I watch for the interpersonal drama and comedy, not for the fighting ant mecha)

I don't have enough money to own a lot of anime, but I own Nadesico, Sailormoon R (strictly for nostalgia purposes), Grave of the Fireflies, and Akira (only because it was bought for me)

I am incredibly bothered by edits... That makes me elitist in that regard, but it is an almost moot point as I don't like most of the anime on TV... The only one currently that bugs me is Detective Conan... The name changes and "cartoonizing" of the dialogue is entirely uncalled for... I think that merely because something is a "cartoon" (meaning, by my own definition and not the dictionary's (though they may be similar, I didn't look it up) "simplified artwork to represent things iconically rather than in detail") doesn't mean that the dialogue and story has to fit the cartoony mold(sp?)

I am not elitist in the sense that I think Japanese animation "0\/\/|\|5 411" I believe that there is good american animation as well... Most of Don Bleuth's movies, for instance. American Tale, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Secret of NIMH... These are all excelent movies (but avoid the sequals, which bleuth had no part in...) So, I guess I'm not as much of an "anime" fan as I am an animation fan.

Hobbyist. I don't have the nerve or the extra cash to buy a DVD or VHS I've never seen, unless I know darn well I'll like it. The only anime I've done that with was Castle In the Sky, because I knew I'd love it. Hayao Miyazaki is the next Tezuka. I will always buy his stuff, seen or not.
That being said, how come no store that sells anime lets us rent it?

I have the most of the hobbyist traits:

-Has seen a wide range of shows outside of Television (going beyond what is being aired.)
Yes, many more than on TV.
-Has a preference of watching anime subtitled\dubbed (depending on the quality of either.)
Exactly. Wouldn't ever watch Bebop subbed, but wouldn't watch Voices of a Distant Star dubbed. It's all about quality preferences.
-Buys anime DVDs only when he\she enjoys the series.
I miss on this one, because I have bought a few series that I had never seen previously.
-Notices edits, but understands the "broadcasting = edit" rule and goes on watching.
Yeah. Sometimes it is bothersome, but often content is cleaned up a bit, which can be good.
-Watches fansubs rarely.
Right here also.
-Has gone to an AnimeCon only once.
Here is my Casual trait. I've never been to a Con.
-Watches anime when he\she feels like it or after buying a new series.
I watch more anime than movies or TV, but I don't watch every day.

I guess I'm a pretty confirmed Hobbyist.

Anime Hobbyist seems to match me best.
-I've seen a decent amount of anime I guess (however I still have tons left)
-I highly prefer subbed or even raw anime to dubbed
-I will buy the anime if I like it enough
-I hate it when things are altered from the original version. Leave it alone!
-I will watch fansubs only for things like Pocket Monsters that don't have the Japanese version officially subbed in the US. As for things officially subbed, I wouldn't, in most cases, need to watch fansubs since I could rent the DVD and watch it officially subbed there.
-I have never been to an AnimeCon yet, but I'd love to go someday when one is near enough to me and I hear about it.
-I love watching anime. I see a fair amount since I watch Japanese Pocket Monsters on my computer pretty often, rent anime off of Netflix, and own a little on DVD.
