It sounds interesting, but I haven't seen it yet. The movie is set during the Boshin War, is it not? (If I'm thinking of the right name. If I did, thank Kenshin. ^_^x)

Hey, could someone PM the extent of and any particularly gory scene in the move?

Oh, yeah, this was an excellent movie!! I'd say an overall 9/10, if not a ten all together. It's been a while since I've seen it.

Well, though I really liked the story, and most of the acting was good… I just don’t like Tom Cruise…

It was a good movie, but not perfet, 7.5/10 from me. I would recommend this movie to most people. ;)

Caution: There is theatrical and war violence, but no real gore. Some alcohol use (the main character is a sort-of alcoholic). Some poor language, though this and the alcohol use is primarily in the beginning of the movie, it does serve a purpose in developing the main character later on. There is some partial nudity, but no sex. HURRAY for Hollywood making a movie with no sex!

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

I agree man
one of the BEST movies
not only was it cool, it taught a lesson.
I have yet to figure that lesson out. lol
You find that you have a weapon, an instrument that
will give you power over the wind and sea.
In one word, you can stop time. It is a weapon
so powerful that even God will bow
down to you and all his angels fall at your feet.
What would you do with it?

I enjoyed it all around. There is a romantic content, but no sex at all, which is a relief, seeing it's Tom Cruise as the leading actor. No offense to any Cruise fans out there (myself included), but it is a huge relief to see a movie with no sex in it whatsoever.

I've never seen it. But I've heard it's really good. Really, I don't need to see it, considering my cousin has told me all about it. I mean, everything...even the fighting scenes, those he didn't just tell me about, he literally acted them out for me. Screams, slashing sword scrape sound effects, swords piercing through flesh effects, heads being be-headed effects, rolling on the ground....the whole bit. Lol.

I agree mostly with Kaji. The movie was very entertaining, but I wouldn't say it was good. Those are two different things. I also think that any movie with Tom Cruise could be made better by replacing him with a different actor. They should have just left his character out of the movie completely and just made a movie about the Japanese. Of course then Americans would probably never watch it. The plot was basically Dances with Wolves meets Japan, and the romance was contrived and cheep. Like I said, it wasn't a good movie, but I was entertained.

Heh. A couple of reviews I read of the movie said they would've scored it higher if Tom Cruise hadn't been in it. They said it was one of those "Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise playing..." type things.

I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, so I'll probably rent it. I'm sure it's entertaining, but it's probably not a ten/four stars/however you want to rate it.

Now, if you want to see a REALLY good samurai movie, pick up the classic Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. Be sure to get the director's cut, though, as the non-director's cut removes too many scenes because most people would find them "boring." I thought that the whole movie was totally worth watching, and find it difficult to believe they would cut any of it out.

that having them just MADE the movie. Ninjas are so cool
i think they could have used more shuriken though dont u think????

Actually I disagree with the entire "Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise" deal. I thought it was the other way around. He did a excellent job portraying that charatcer and the director didn't focus on Cruise but on the movie as a whole. And im not a big fan of the actor as it is.

I think it desevres a 8 or 9/10.

The Last Samurai is an excellent film and definitely one of my favorites. It's an American film yet very Japanese in many apsects. Very moving and entertaining and a must see. I am proud to own this one.

Very Americanized and highly unrealistic, in my opinion, but I also found it very beautiful. I just loved the scenery and how there were moments of peacefulness as well as battle, though it didn't strike me as genuinely Japanese. I did like it, though.

I agree with kae; if you're looking for a great REAL samurai movie, go for Seven Samurai. That was an awesome movie.

All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close[/color]

Also not a big fan of Cruise, but none the less the movie rocked! Plot was solid, the action was good and the scenery/landscape was just beautiful. Beautiful? I hardly ever us that word but yes, it was just awesome. The only beef I have was about the ending... Everything always ends on a "happy note." But none-the-less, it ranks in my top 5 movies along w/ Forest Gump (no joke), grave of the fireflies and a few others. I would rate this about .... 8/10

When I first saw the movie advertised, I was like, "Tom Cruise as a samurai? What the heck?" I thought it was the dumbest idea ever. But then I decided to watch it when my parents rented it, and I actually thought it was a great movie! Surprised me big time. But nobody else seemed to like it, and I thought I was the only one. I'm glad to see there are others who thought it was good too. It's only about $10 on DVD now. Maybe I'll have to get it some time.

I watched it last year when it was in theaters. I actually liked it a whole lot, though it was sad/happy kinda end. I just love fighting and epics and japanese.
I have watched the Seven Samurai. Don't they have a game out for that? I watched it on the independet films channel. That one has quite a few good foreign films on it, if you cipher through it.

Perhaps unrealistic wasn't the best choice of words, though I can't think of a word to fit what I felt. I guess it just seemed really, really American. And there's also the fact (as one reviewer pointed out) that Cruise's character could have just as easily been portrayed as a traitor.

Oh, and about researching, the one thing they got wrong that drove me crazy was the thing about beheading the defeated general as he committed seppuku in honorable defeat. As a kaishakunin (second) for someone committing seppuku, you don't sever the head, but leave it hanging by the slightest amount of skin. Beheading is a disgrace reserved for criminals. *grrr*

Don't get me wrong, I really liked this movie, but I guess I'd describe it as overly romanticized. Entertaining, but not particularly historical.

Don't get me wrong, I love this movie, but it will never hold a candle to the likes of Braveheart, Black Hawk Down, Etc... To me TLS was more of a Gladiator in terms of history and actual quality. I.E. Very fun and entertaining, not meaningful and lasting. BTW, I picked up SE (2 disc) WS of TLS at my local music store for $5!?!?

I enjoyed the movie - it was one of the best epics I've seen and I'm VERY PICKY when it comes to epics. I just don't call any movie an epic (Troy and Pearl Harbor are good instances of failed epics).

The only place where the movie fails though is during the end when Tom Cruise speaks to the Emperor Meiji. Gaaaaaaaah! Literally in the last minutes the film implodes! Ack!

It's not so much the Emperor's voice as the happenings in the entire scene, all which feels wrong - as if the producers felt they needed an upbeat ending. It all seems fake.
