What "kind" of anime fan are you?

Postby Mike_Myers » Fri Nov 26, 2004 12:23 am

I was just wondering about the type of fans you guys are here at the CAA (as I still want to get to know you all of you a bit better.) What is posted below is here a "loose" rubric of what type of anime fan one could be. I found this somewhere in another anime forum and thought I'd share this with you...
------------------------------------------------------------

ANIME FAN "SPECTRUM"

The Elitist Fan
-Has seen "everything" or as much he\she is willing to look into (meaning the goal is to watch as much as possible.)
-Would watch nothing but subtitles.
-Dedicated to buying as many DVD titles as one could afford.
-Easily offended by edits made on TV and would never watch anime broadcasted
-A devoted collector of fansubs and downloads constantly.
-Goes to any anime convention that he\she feels that they must go to get more merchandise.
-Watches anime almost everyday and has a set "agenda" on what series must be finished within the next day.

The Anime Hobbyist

-Has seen a wide range of shows outside of Television (going beyond what is being aired.)
-Has a preference of watching anime subtitled\dubbed (depending on the quality of either.)
-Buys anime DVDs only when he\she enjoys the series.
-Notices edits, but understands the "broadcasting = edit" rule and goes on watching.
-Watches fansubs rarely.
-Has gone to an AnimeCon only once.
-Watches anime when he\she feels like it or after buying a new series

The Casual Fan

-Watches whatever anime is on Television.
-Prefers to watch dubs for simplicity.
-Rarely buys anime on DVD.
-Never pays attention to edits for broadcasts.
-Never has heard of a fansub.
-Has not been to an AnimeCon.
-Watches anime whenever it shows up on TV.

---------------------------------------------------------

For me I'm pretty much a hobbyist, though I have never been to a Con and I hardly mind edits on television. Maybe I'm a Casual-hobbyist? :)

I used to be "The anime hobbyist, always buying a new dvd each week. Now being in college I can't really afford to buy dvd's each week. So right now I'm more of a Casual fan watching whatever is on TV. Though I do go out and buy a new dvd every so often.

I'm somewhere between the Elitist Fan and the Anime Hobbyist, except that I can't afford to shell out on DVDs, but everything else pretty much applies...The Elitist Hobbyist, I guess. XD

Anime Hobbyist. and probably on the lower end of that area. I have certain anime that I like and I don't widen my horizons too much, but I do reant anime from time to time, and definitely own sevral series. I have been to a con only once but look forward to the next one in my area. I don't wwatch whatever is on TV because it is usualy stuff I cannot stand (such as Yu-Gi-Oh)

Although I've found anime intriguing for a bunch of years I've never really gotten into it until fairly recently. I guess I'd be a Casual Fan though I don't really follow all the Casual Fan specifications. I've been downloading fansubs pretty much every day that I get to use highspeed internet (ya, I don't have it at home yet), and I think I prefer fansubs to fandubs because I like listening to the original Japanese. I used to watch anime on TV a fair bit but it seems a lot of the shows are kinda lame on the channels we get from here (with our TV's rabbit ears). Hopefully as I widen my anime horizons I'll start moving into the Anime Hobbyist category.

I'm a hobbyist with a few qualities of Elitest. ^_^

I'm definitely more than a hobbyist, but I'm definitely not an elitist. I like and support dubs and getting anime on TV. I'm not at all upset with the casting of Hillary Duff as Asuka. And I think Carl Macek did wonders for the anime industry in the US by horribly mutilating and destroying three anime series to make Robotech.

I guess I'm a casual fan, then. (Except that I have heard of a fansub, and even watched one once. *shudders* ) The only anime DVDs I've bought are the Sailor Moon movies (not bothering with the series), but if I can ever find The Bush Baby and/or Hamtaro DVD box sets, I'd buy those too.

I don't watch any anime that comes on tv...'cause barely none of it is my style. I DO watch Rurouni Kenshin EVERY time it comes on, unless I already have it on my small collection(does one DVD count?). I've never been to any con though I really want to(the only problem is money) So I guess sorta hobbyist.

Hmm...

I'm a mix of casual and hobbyist.

I can go either way with sub/dubs. I love the American voice acting (Lex Lang, David Lucas all ROCK in my opinion. Best of the best, along with Dorothy Melendrez. She has a very nice voice.) But sometimes, it's good to watch a sub, listening to it in the original japanese. Ahhhhhh.

I have yet to go to an animecon, but my friends and I are planning for next year, God willing. :-)

Say, has CAA ever set up a grouping at animecon's for it's members?
Just a thought.

I've been open to watching anime outside of what's on tv, and my friends are rather....resourceful in that area. My only caution in just randomly picking up a manga or anime I don't know is because of the "hentai" or other sexual content prevalent in alot of works (not all, but most). Like Hollywood, I've had to filter through to find any jewels. ::sigh:: There are SO many great stories too.

I'm a hobbyist, except I only watch subs. I've seen lots of casual people who only watch subs as well, and elitists ("I was watching anime back when they still called it 'Japanimation!') who only watch dubs. It's not really a factor in determining whether you're hardcore about anime.

I'm a hobbyist with some traits of an elitist. :)

I would be a Hobbyist, and my bro would be an elitist... which is a complete role reversal cause a year or so ago I was the one who loved anime (to the point of obsession I believe, hence I stopped myself from watching it for several months).

[btw, Mr S's post translates to: "I am the leetest anime fan"; leet means cool, 'elite']

Well I would fall between "The Elitist Fan" and "The Anime Hobbyist"

Here is a more personalized list taken from the 2 originals

-Has seen a wide range of shows outside of Television (going beyond what is being aired.)
-Watches anime when he\she feels like it or after buying a new series
-Buys anime DVDs only when he\she enjoys the series.
-Has a preference of watching anime subtitled\dubbed (depending on the quality of either.)
-A devoted collector of fansubs and downloads constantly.
-Easily offended by edits made on TV and would never watch anime broadcasted
-Watches anime almost everyday and has a set "agenda" on what series must be finished within the next day.

Plus some personal preferences as well.
