Permissible Ages

Postby Jasdero » Thu Oct 07, 2004 11:09 pm

My brother wanted to register here only a few minutes ago, but when we entered in his birthdate [6/10/1993] it said that because of his age, he would not be allowed to register. I was just curious about the reasoning behind this restriction, and whether or not there is a possibility of it being lifted. Thanks. : )

It's because we follow COPPA, an online child protection act. From what I understand, it's supposed to help prevent children from being abused by pervs they might meet online; I don't know all the reasoning behind it but I just know that's the rule and there won't be any reversing it any time soon. It's not that we are opposed to having younger members or that there is inappropriate things going on, it's just the law we are requried to follow.

The way you get around it is by checking that you're under 13 in the registration box and then typing in a parent/guardian's email address. This will only inform them that their kid is registering on this site; nothing more.
