Harrassment

Get the scoop on the changes happening here at CAA. You may also suggest changes or additions to the site and provide feedback about the board.

One thing I do want to avoid is an atmosphere where everyone points fingers at everyone else in suspicion. That's why I think Galant's idea of "and posting a list of offending usernames" is a nice idea on first blush, but will lead to a lot of acrimony. I don't think having a public black list will help matters any.

In that same vein (directed not just at ZiP), while we want any and -all- reports of harrassment, even ones you're not sure about, I'm asking that in fairness to everyone here that all concerns be PMmed, please -- don't post them. Many episodes in the past have been misunderstandings -- some haven't, unfortunately, but making that call is our job. A public post nails someone without any kind of investigation at all.

Our intention with CAA is to create a safe, non-threatening environment. A watchful attitude is perfectly in-line with that desire. An attitude of suspicion isn't. Let us do the work of nailing the fortunately very few bad folks that show up here, while you do your job of enjoying the rest of your time on the boards, okay? :)

Point taken Shoo. Just to clarify though I was referring to a thread/list which only the mods could write to, ensuring that only definite offenders would be included. Allowing people to double check those names against any asking for info, and adding a deterent for any would be offenders.

But either way, just tossing out an idea!

God bless,
G.

That'd probably be the 'banned members' thread...

SK is right. If we ban someone for something like that, it will likely end up in the band members thread. Having another thread saying essentially the same thing would be a bit duplicitius.

Can I know how many people have been harassed? I haven't, but maybe that's because even other members here think I'm a boy before I tell them.

We're not at liberty to disclose that information either. Suffice it to say that, cliche as it sounds, one member is one too many.

Okay. I guess once is even enough.

Edit: Wait a second... Why? Don't worry, I really don't care to know how many people were harrassed, but why is that knowledge off limits?

Because 1) it's not a statistic that you or any of the other users can do anything about other than report other incidents 2) a raw number doesn't predict which way the trend is going 3) a number without understanding how it was generated or what's being done about it can unnecessarily alarm people.

Just a suggestion, not just to female members, but to everyone (Yes, I realize IM screennames have been removed from profiles, but that doesn't mean harassment will stop completely): There ARE privacy settings you can apply on IM that will allow only those on your buddy list to see that you're online. Yes, it may be a hassle for people who want to IM you, and it may take a bit of getting used to, but it's a worthy sacrifice for your wellbeing, is it not?

An excellent suggestion.
