Doom 3

Postby {Daj} » Mon Aug 09, 2004 6:31 pm

I went to the local internet cafe and played D3 for about 3 hours. It is definately the best PC game I have ever played. The graphics are amazing, as is the audio. I found my self jumping at the sound of an opening door. As well as a TWENTY HOUR single player campaign, the multi-player is the most intense multi-play mode I have every played. This is also one of the only horror FPS that actually scare the crud out of you.

Post your coments.

this game is awesome, im playing it on vetran right now, i read in pcgamer that they took 15 hours to play, and they play games sloooooow, so i figure its about a 10 hour game

the multiplayer is pretty good, i havent had a chance to play alot of the maps with my friends.....

and yes....it scares me to death lol, lots of adrenaline!

I can't say I'll be buying the game anytime soon.... to many games I want already... and preferably, if I buy a shooter for $50... I want a good multiplayer value to it. With limited options and only four players (until the mod crew comes in), it's not looking as attractive as the single player campaign. Otherwise, the game looks pretty sweet, but until it drops to $20, I think the upcoming demo will be enough for me.

Need my paycheck but I've played the alpha and played with a friend's copy. Deffinetly very terrifying indeed. Lol I mean you're practically inducing an anxiety attack on yourself when you play. The multiplayer doesn't look too exciting but that will change.

The mods are already in. There were net games with 16 players. And for lack of maps, those to will be added via mods. I heard a rumour that there will be updates for multiplayer from id. Even a 4 player game was intense.

grrr...why oh why can't I have this game...it's unfair??? No, I'm just kidding, seriously as a fan of the first Doom (It got me into FPS games) and Doom 2, this game is just bringing back memories of my childhood.

So what kinda video cards for you guys that are playing the game, running?

I got a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200...but I'm sure it's not enough to play this game at least 30 frames.

..... Away from me, for thou art noob. Seriously, A. Fun as heck B. Scarey as heck C. Beautiful graphics and textures

:edit: *rushes to pc gamger mag* To quote Dan Morris, who wrote the review, "Doom 3 took me 23 hours to complete on the medium difficulty setting." If they play it slow, it must be attleast 12 hours.

My machine meets the MIN requirements. I have a GeForce4 MX which it will run on. 512 RAM, and an AMD Athalon 2800. I can run it.

This game is pretty cool, from what I've seen of it. My brother has been updating his computer for months so he can play it and then got it right when it came out. He had been waiting for this game since they announced that they were making in back in 2000.

From what I've seen, the graphics are spectacular. There's real time shadowing and the physics are great.

I haven't been to motivated to sit down and play it or watch it because my computer is too cruddy to run it and If I get hooked, I wouldn't be able to play it on my own computer. Therefore I'd have to play it on my brothers comp, which would never happen(he's always on it). So I'm just kinda waiting around for my dad to fix up my comp.

The fact that I'm not as into gaming as he is has a lot to do with it too.

I'd say, if you've played the first game(s) and liked them, you'd love this one.

Well, i just saw the first few minutes of the game at a friend's house.
Impressive intro (once you realise the first part is done with the ENGINE!), and crispy sharp graphics. Atmosphere is Half-Life, Half-Life and more Half-Life. Even the story is the same! Switch scientists with marines and you get the picture.
When the first Imps started appearing, I lost interest... then it becomes the same growl/bloodsplash/monstermash Doom-players are used to. Not my cup of tea.

Would make an AWESOME engine for a Star Wars FPS shooter with Half-Life-like plot, though!

Technically the game is amazing.... as was the original when it came out. I'm not big into the survival horror thing, and blood and guts isn't by cup of tea, but I'll most likely get this when it hits the XBox...

I mean, comeon, the game engine projects FMV onto surfaces for crying out loud!

Be interesting to see what they do for their next project over at ID.

a good game, yes, but as far as graphics go, it's nothing compared to Far Cry. Worth 50 dollars? No way. Maybe if it comes down to like 30, or something. The multiplayer is somewhat lacking in modes, but is still engaging. The single player is actually more about 9 hours for experienced gamers, and somewhere around 15 for people who aren't so good. (no offense.) Pair that with pretty much no single-player replay value, and it doesn't seem to justify the 50 dollar price tag.

just so you know, doom 3 won't push the limits of that card. i can easily run the game with graphics on ultra at 1024x768 with an 9700 128mb.

not much pushes 256mb cards right now, except for Far Cry.

I saw this in another forum, so figured it may help anyone that has the game.

Disclaimer: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

This is a sort of tweak to get more fps, by making optimal use of your RAM
Just go to your doom dir. and look for doomconfig.cfg open it with wordpad and edit the numbers of

seta image_cacheMegs "20"
seta image_cacheMinK "200"
to numbers equal to your RAM

for 256 mb RAM:
seta image_cacheMegs "64"
seta image_cacheMinK "640"
or
seta image_cacheMegs "96"
seta image_cacheMinK "960

for 512 mb RAM
seta image_cacheMegs "128"
seta image_cacheMinK "1280"

for 768 mb RAM
seta image_cacheMegs "192"
seta image_cacheMinK "1920"

for 1024 mb RAM
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "2560"

doom³ will run alot smoother now

In the base directory of Doom 3 there are 6 files with a .pk4 extension.
If you extract each one to the base directory using winrar it's suppose to speed D3 up a little bit as well. Something about the processor has to extract these files while you are playing but if they are already extracted you should see a boost. Also make sure you remove the original .pk4 files so the game will use the extracted files instead of the original.

O_o How much does it increase performance, you ask?

It improves FPS. Supposedly a good overall improvement from what I understand.

like i said before, pretty much any 128mb card can run doom 3 with high settings.

256mb cards can run doom3 with the resolution up at 1600x1200
usually.

I'm not a resolution junkie, and currently only own a 19" television... I've yet to look at a game on my XBox and think "oh, if that was only higher resolution".... actually, the only real downside to the low-rez thing is with games with lots of text, you can only go so small before it starts to blur.

Antialiasing..... most like will be supported, but if not, who cares? Kinda fits in with my attitude about resolution (though this helps with lower-rez displays).

The frame rate could be an issue, except that ID has already released footage of the game off the XBox version... and while it's not 60 FPS, it's not single digit either (trust me, I've had games come in at single digit already.... unplayable).

I'm actually more worried about playing it with a dual-stick controler as apposed to a mouse/keyboard combo.... considering it's high paced, this could be a problem.... as is I've avoided pretty much just about every FPS with the exception of Halo (because it was designed for controler play).

Raiden no Kishi wrote:No I didn't. Answer the question for real, please.

I can think of a couple of reasons to want to play it.....

1) Some people are into the whole horror and blood-and-guts sort of thing... for them this is the granddaddy of those games for the PC. Not my thing, and from the sounds of things, not yours either.

2) As a horror game ID says they have done this a little different, giving you more of the horror movie kind of feel to it... and from what I've seen and some of the events I've heard about in the game, it's just the thing to scare the pants off you.... and some people just like that (frankly I'm not one of them).

3) Awesome FPS game.... and some people will play it in spite of the gore, not because of it (this is part of why I'll be playing it eventually). I played the originals when they came out.... though I've always preferred the original Dark Forces game over the Dooms and whatnot.

4) Technology. ID has a habbit of being an idustry leader. Deathmatch is what it is in large part to what they've contributed to the whole mess. The whole FPS thing was practically started with the original Wolfenstein 3D and later with Doom.

In the end this is one of those, "if you don't feel right about it, don't do it" kind of things... Doom3 isn't everybody's cup of tea.... given a choice between that and other games, most likely I'll pick the other games over it.

When it comes down to it I figure that most Christians should and will avoid the game.... others will play it because the game and it's subject matter doesn't bother them.

I'm honestly more insterested in HL2 myself.... given the choice I'd take HL2 over Doom3.

Ok... So this is survival horror... Now, while I was scared out of my pants by the SH4 preview, I was not scared in the slightest by the doom 3 preview... I guess that could change when I play both of them...

So, is there a plot? Does it compare to the Silent Hill games? CAN it compare to the silent hill games? I guess I'd rather have an answer to the former than the latter, but the latter shows you my feelings.

Is there any sort of psychological horror in this game, or is it all "Dog through the window, there's my spleen" kind of stuff? What kind of scary is this game?

Oh, and in the graphical balance, they made the other stuff look good whilst the humans look like crap... I tend to prefer the otehr way, and on the new cards, they could have achieved a SH level of realism for the humans and still gone all out with everything else, such as interactivity of the environments and, um, the gore factor... But they didn't have that level of realism for the humans... And, yes, I do know that for sure, I saw the previews. The human characters look horrible... Compared to a PS2 GAME...
