Christian Rock

Postby DrNic » Sat Aug 07, 2004 3:01 pm

Yeah, ok, you could have probably guessed from the title that I was about to ask for some good christian rock suggestions (seeing that most of my music threads are something along those lines). I've already heard Thousand Foot Krutch and Pillar and I think they rock! I've heard Jars of clay but wasn't particulaly interested in them. Anymore?

(by the way some of you may have noticed the jrock thread below that no-ones replied to, if any1 can help me with any of those questions I'd be reeeeeeeeaaaaaally happy :) )

Do you know Sanctus Real? If not...they just started getting REALLY big in the Christian music scene. They were fromed like right in my area and I got han gout with most of th eband members. One of my chruch'es families daughter is married to Matt Hammit so whenever the YG goes with them to Sancrus Real concerts we get back-stages passes and stuff. That's alot of fun to do.

heres some other ideas:

Kids in the Way
Eso
38th Prallel
12 Stones
East West
Thousand Foot Krutch
FM Static
Pilalr
Kutless
Falling Up
Emery
Lucerin Blue
Watashi Wa
Anberlin
Justified

Hi guys,

I thought Linkin Park, Switchfoot, Evanescence ("Bring me To Life") and Delirious were pretty good. Are these groups considered rock? And if so, what type of rock are they?

I thought Jars of Clay was considered alternative rock..erm, goodness, I'm terribly confused now. How does one define the difference between alternative and rock genres? 0.o

Thanks for these lists generated by everyone so far. I intend to check them all out. ^^

Yeah, sorry. I should have been more specific. I'm into most kinds of rock but my favourites are punk (like AFI, MISFITS and DISTILLERS) Nu-metalish bands (LINKIN PARK, LOST PROPHETS AND INCUBUS and NOT bands like Limp Bizkit) Goth Rock (LACUNA COIL, NIGHTWISH saddly not evanescene though). The only rock I don't particulaly like is the new punk bands (BLINK182, GOOD CHARLOTTE, THE OFFSPRINGS NEWER STUFF). Hope that helps.

I've made a list...a rather long list infact of all the bands that have been said so far and I'll begin checking them out as soon as possible. I'm going on holiday tomorrow (again) so I won't be able to check up on this thread fer a couple of days (I'm only going for the weekend), so if you very kind people could keep adding to the eve3r growing list of bands that could be very helpful. :) Thanx again!! ^_^

*GASP*
NIGHTWISH!! They are SO good!!!
If you like Nightwish, you should check out Within Temptation. They're not Christian, but they're really, really good! You might like Staple- I haven't seen them listed here yet- and you probably know Skillet by now, judging by how many times they've been mentioned. Try "The Awakening" for some good Christian Goth Rock, and definately check out Gretchen. You might like Narnia...I've only heard one or two of their songs, though, so I can't really judge what type of music they are. Hmm...Superchick is fun girly pop-rock, when you wanna feel all upbeat and happy, and Barlow Girl is really good too..try the song 'Never Alone"...the heavy version, not the crappy radio mix without guitar. teknofischzone.com has some good Christian music links, and..I think it's airone.com (something like that) has online hard rock radio. Personally I've started to like Plumb (I think that's how it's spelled), but I haven't heard much. flamingfish.com (again, I think that's the right address, but of course who knows) has an online radio for electronic music and rock/goth christian music- and plus they've got some songs you can download for free!
Your taste in music rocketh, by the way!

ok...definitely not picking on anyone here, but so far i've heard someone refer to Jars of Clay as electronica and then as alt rock. off-topic sure, but um...is it either? The only way I can see them being electronica is like..the first album which is rather rare from what i've heard. Alt rock perhaps(depending on your definition) but honestly Im not sure WHAT to classify them as. insight anyone??

on topic:

I second Hitokiri's Sanctus Real mentioning. *is listening now*

Also, Switchfoot...The Benjamin Gate, 38th Parallel, Relient K, Falling Up, etc.
Way too much good music out there. ^_^

(note: i was naming stuff before I read the extra explanation of genre. so yeah...this is all kinds, lol. do check out 38th Parallel though....I'm not a huge fan, but I quite like them in certain moods.)

Hi
Some other good bands are TobyMac, Kevin Max, Skillet, Pillar, Rebecca St. James,
and Hawk Nelson. There are lots of others!
Alot of teens have tried smoking pot. I know, I've smelled it in my high schools bathroom stalls. Everytime I come out of one of them, some gang guys come and ask if they can have a joint. I just stare at them for awhile and walk off. If you're one of those "few" who don't smoke either, then copy and paste this in your signature.

BILBO'S LAST SONG:

Day is ended, dim my eyes,
but journey long before me lies.
Farewell, Friends! I hear the call.
The ship's beside the stony wall.
Foam is white and waves are grey;
beyond the sunset leads my way.
Foam is salt, the wind is free;
I hear the rising of the sea.

Farewell, Friends! The sails are set,
the wind is east, the moorings fret.
Shadows long before me lie,
beneath the everbending sky,
but islands lie behind the Sun,
that I shall rise ere all is done;
lands there are to west of West,
where night is quiet and sleep is rest.

Guided by the lonely star,
beyond the utmost harbour bar
I'll find the havens fair and free,
and beaches of the Starlit Sea.
Ship, my ship! I seek the west,
and fields, and mountains ever blest.
Farewell to middle earth at last.
I see the star above your mast.

Linkin Park is Nu Metal, Switchfoot is pop, and Evanescence is rock, (but it may not be anymore now that Ben Moody is gone).

I like:

Alter Bridge (Not excactly Christian, but pretty close.)
Lifehouse
Switchfoot
Fuel (Again, close. You may want to look them up first.)

I want to get a listen at As I Lay Dying.

Um, I thought Jars of Clay was folk rock. Heck, some of their most recent stuff might just be plain folk music (I'm a fan of theirs).

And that's all I really have to contribute

I would call Jars of Clay Folk-Rock more than anything else, though they do use drum machines of some pretty well knows songs.

My favorite Christian Rock bands are PFR and The Waiting, though they're nowhere near as heavy as most of the bands being thrown around this topic.
