Allow users to lock their own threads?

Postby JediSonic » Mon Aug 02, 2004 2:03 pm

Ive seen several cases where the thread starter will say "lock this thread please" which not only makes it take longer to lock but also bumps it to the top.. the exact opposite of what the person wanted!

Personally I havent had a problem with it but I was thinking it might be a nice little feature to allow users to lock their own threads.

I see your logic, but I can also see possible abuses. Unless the other mods wish to discuss the issue, I don't think it justifies giving that particular power to most users.

Also, they could PM a moderator. That would avoid a bump.

I agree with UC--a pm is a nice, discreet way of getting our attention if you really want it, and I don't think many "lock this please!" requests take long to process--we try to move quickly and usually are already watching a thread by the time it gets to that stage. So I wouldn't think putting this power into the hands of the members would be a very viable option at this point.

However, it might be a gesture of faith in the members...of course, its so open to abuse it might undo any good it creates...just my worthless penny and a half.

The question is if that is a gesture we wish to make... and I feel relatively certain the answer to that question will be in the negative sense.

As far as I know, we are under no obligation to lock threads when asked. I know that where I am concerned I lock threads only when they are becoming volatile or should be locked. Threads like the one you mentioned we (and I believe I can speak for the staff) generally leave open, because, as you said, there could be useful extended conversation.

Okay, you guys brought up some good points on how it could be abused, etc.

So now that I have my answer, could someone lock this thread? jk

I don't agree with it. What purpose would there be for mods?
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

I tried so very hard not to post here. Well done. It's nice to see humor that carries an alternate meaning. I'm going to be chuckling about this one for some time now.

Lock it yourself.

Actually, if we could avoid posting any more here, unless someone truly has something new to add to the discussion, it would probably be for the best.
