Battle Royal

Postby Kenchii » Thu Jul 15, 2004 9:27 am

WARNING: This film contains mass blood, gore, violent parts, and should not be viewed by audiance under 18 years of age.

"At the dawn of the Millenium, the nation collapsed. At 15% unemployment, 10 million were out of work, 800,000 students boycotted school. The adults lost confidence, and fearing the youth, eventually passed the 'Millenium Educational Reform Act'...AKA: The BR Act."
- opening graphics introduction to Battle Royale (BattleRoyalOnline.com)

Has anyone seen it? I just watch BRI, and BRII. Man, Its incrediable! Horror fans its a must! Battle Royale, a film by the veteran Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku, tells the story of a dystopic future in which each year, a randomly-selected 9th grade class is kidnapped and sent to a deserted island where they are equipped with weapons and are forced to kill each other until one survivor is left. The movie, which premiered in Japan on December 16, 2000 amidst much controversy, is based on a bestselling novel by Koushun Takami.

The movie is banned in America. That is the rumor going around the net. Not because of its gore, but the idea of 8th graders killing their friends.

Anyone read the US manga release of BR? is it good?
BTW anyone know any BR quizzes??

O_O No I have not seen it, and I hope I do not. That is pretty gross and disturbing hence "horror".

i've seen the first one, although i'm not sure whether it was the full gore version or the cut version that was aired on tv over here in scotland, my freind has the dvd-rip. I haven't read the manga, but i have seen it in a couple of my local stores that stock anime/manga stuff.

I didn't know the sequel was out yet, i really need to see it, has it been recently released? I've heard about some online trailers, but haven't got round to looking for any, what was the sequel like compared to BR 1?

I read the book, saw both movies, and read the first volume of the manga.

VERDICTS:
BR I: CLASSIC GORE GOODNESS. Better than Kill Bill 1 in some ways.

BR II: so stupid it was funny. I loved the beach landing sequence though.
they crawl thru a mine tunnel in Japan and end up in Afghanistan? PURE GENIUS
BR the Book: king. Better than everything else in the franchise. Top-notch writing. and...
Shogo doesn't die!! He's way too cool to die!! And there's a girl who hides a razor blade in HER PANTIES. now that's 'feminine protection'!!
Manga = CRAP. They ruined it by adding sex. And they made the teacher guy a complete pervert. Ridiculous scenes of gore. Not recommended.

The sequel has been released in Japan and you can find it on sites that import Japanese stuff. It has english subtitles. Its official title is 'BRII: Requiem'. If you thought BRI made no sense, you were right. BRII makes even less, as it involves Nanahara rounding up a bunch of BR survivors and making them into a terrorist group called 'Wild Seven'. They declare war against all adults. (not kidding.) They don't really stop to think that they will all be adults themselves in 5 years or so. There's an Akira-esque pill chugging scene. As a testament to its stupidity, BRII contains the obligatory 'Bad Science Fiction Movie Device', aka EMP generator. I still liked BRII nonetheless. The new teacher is funny.

Well, the sequal pretty much sucks in my option. I mean, its like a war film. The kids are punks (dropouts) it pretty much starts out the same as BR1 then the rules of the game change (=_= oh boy..) instead of killing each other, they are set to go for a all-adult group. Terroist are in the movies, Wild 7, and they are with the BR1. Also the necklessess are taken off.(sigh)Now the students have uniforms and the story gets jumbled up. It basically turns into a shootout thuout the WHOLE MOVIE. it was a dissappointment.

if I was in Battle Royale, i would survive. in that sort of situation, all other goals and considerations are immaterial.

of course, it begs the question: 'Is it acceptable for a Christian to participate in something like Battle Royale?' answer: maybe.

two arguments against: 1) killing innocents: people in BR are chosen randomly. 2) they were your friends: BR participants are all chosen from one class.

two arguments for: 1) self-defense: if you don't kill, you will be killed, and in ANY circumstance, all except one will die. even that isn't guaranteed. 2) order by government: if you are ordered to kill by the state, you kill. if any earthly power has authority over life and death, it is the state.

but couldn't someone else, through the same logic, justify playing the game? "They were trying to kill me, as well, so I couldn't help it." What if you didn't attack someone unless they fired at you first?

Yeah those bits were pretty funny, and all the references to "That Country" were not to far off the mark with Bush's Governments and indeed my own UK's "Anti-Terror" policy, it was interesting to see it taken to an extreme, if ya get what i mean

I also liked Nanahara's new style, was pretty cool. It also seemed that the message of the film came through clearer than in BR 1

I loved the first movie. It's a great piece of allegory on the state of education in Asian schools, where students are brutally ranked based on raw exam results, and only those at the top will advance, only to find themselves in another round of elimination; those who fail to beat out (kill) their peers are doomed to a life of failure, and thus are no better than dead (like Shuya's father). It really spoke to me, as I'm sure it would speak to anyone who's ever been through that.

Oh, btw, the actress who played the jogging girl (Chigusa Takako) played Gogo in Kill Bill.
